nick5354ParticipantJust now PG has had a nasty landing contesting a Harden dunk in the open court.
I saw this could be serious because of the way he landed. It looked Bad. Your lower leg should not bend that way. He is on the stretcher.
One of the worst injuries I have ever seen.

BlueLacesParticipantWow.
I know some people might disagree with this opinion, but I think that owners should have the final say whether their players play for team USA/other countries ala what the Spurs did with Ginobli. I’m as big of a supporter of USA basketball that there is, but owners and franchises have way too much invested in these guys for something like this to happen.

llperezthis brings up an interesting point. I remember mark cuban getting hated on becasue he was against his players playing international ball without having full medical insurance in case an injury happened. A lot of these countries (not sure if usa is one) dont provide any insurance meaning a guy goes down hard, the nba team is paying all the bills including his salary while he’s out.

BlueLacesParticipantAs a fan, of course I want everyone lacing up for their country. I love watching international ball but I’m not the one who has tens of million dollars invested in these guys. I can definitely see why someone like Cuban would voice that opinion.

King CaluchaParticipantI didn’t know things worked like that. In soccer, the national federation and FIFA share expenses for treatment and salaries in those cases. There’s no point in letting players go to international tournaments if players will get injured and nobody will respond.

European BasketballerParticipantThe only European federationthat does not insure their players is Greece. But FIBA Europe will provide for medical costs. But Greece will not pay for anything else.
But all the other European federations do. Greece however is still back in the like the 1980s on that, and this is one of the reasons why Greece has 5-8 of its best players missing every tournament. Because none of the teams will allow a player to play for them if they have even a hangnail.
The Grizzlies would not allow Koufos to play for Greece this summer because of that, simply over a slightly swollen knee for 2 days.
But yes, the other European federations insure their players.

ConezdParticipantI’m one of those people who disagree. Very adamantly. You say, these teams have a lot invested into the players but quite frankly that is not the truth at all. Us fans do. All that money is from the fans of the nba and basketball in general. I pay that nbatv bill, I pay to go see my hometown team play, I buy the jerseys and the 10$ pepsi’s. And guess what? I want guys like Paul George out there competing for USA basketball. Injuries happen ALL the time. PG could have torn an ACL playing Wii tennis with his girlfriend. It happens. I wish him the best and a quick recovery because he’s a hell of a player and competitor. But, all these guys know the risks. Ask D. Rose about it. He’s missed pretty much the last 2 years of his career because of terrible knee injuries and this dude is out there for team USA,(and he looks incredible btw) knowing the risks. I hope this injury doesn’t cost our Olympic teams in the future. I hope players don’t shy away from the Fiba and Olympic teams because a very freak and rare incident.

treytalkssports.comParticipantFrom a broad perspective view, the Pacers may have missed the only championship window that they had. It was unlikely that they were a championship team, but this team has one thing most of the rest of the Eastern Conference didn’t have: continuity. Four returning starters. And if PG really did take a big step forward, and things fell right for them in the playoffs, they may have had a slightly open championship window.
But now PG is hurt, out for the year, and will probably take another half a season to get confidence in his leg and his game. David West is a solid player still, but as his age goes up, his offensive production goes down. Roy Hibbert cannot be a first, second, or third option on offense.
They have missed their title window, last year and this year was their only hope. How much money did the owner lose in this injury? How much money did the Pacers’ brand lose? Will this team be able to recover?
This is one of the reasons why I think the NBA’s guaranteed contract rules are like a game of Russion Roulette. What happens when the player you just committed 25% of your salary cap is injured for a year? Your team is shot. I’m not proposing that the Pacers should be able to cut PG, but if a player gets injured, especially if he’s not participating for the team, shouldn’t the team get some kind of compensation? A first round pick? A trade exemption? Extra salary cap? The ability to pay the injured players salary, but not have it count against the cap?
I feel really awful for PG and he has a tough road ahead. But when PG volunteered for non-Pacer basketball activities, he had no financial risk, but he is forcing the owner into a financially risky situation and the team to risk their successful season.
I love USA basketball and I want the best players to play. If they do, players will get injured. That happens. But the NBA does not have rules that support a team risking their players for USA basketball.

European BasketballerParticipantWh you have such injuries and so fast the body goes into shock and also the nerves are instantly destroyed. I know, I have had such injuries. So no need for crying, also because the only thing the body can really do is think about the pain and try to not think about the pain.
To even breathe takes maximum effort of the body, so crying would just tax the heart to much. So the body does need for that kind of stuff when such extreme and quick injuries happen.

When I broke my arm, it looked awful. It felt…only kind of excruciating. Thankfully the human body does that so we don’t have to bawl our eyes out as grown men

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantI know the Pacers, Paul’s friends,Family and the fans of the NBA all feel terrible right now, I hope he can recover from this injury and continue what has been an incredible career
On a basketball note, the Pacers have a huge whole on their roster now, they may be without George for 2 Years, they may have to blow the team up, Hibbert is about to become a free agent soon, David West is getting long in the tooth, George Hill is going to seem like an expensive starting Pg, they don’t really have have any young player or assets aside from George
Letting Lance any even Evan Turner go seems like a terrible decision in hindsight, at least they would have given the Pacers a player to plug into Paul’s spot…
What do the Pacers do now? Do they start trading their veteran core and prepare to rebuild? Should they go the way of the 76ers/Jazz/Magic/Bucks and begin to aquire assets after a horrific setback?

BasketBalAllanParticipantThis injury is going to be extremely serious, the way his leg broke means that a lot of crucial ligaments and muscle tendons on the inside of his right ankle were put at risk of tearing. These are generally very hard to heal and could mean years of rehab. He almost certainly has torn the membrane that connect the fibula and tibia. This could seriously affect his ankle and foot motion even after rehab.

Lafferty DanielParticipantPacers reporter Candace Buckner has some updates on the Twitter. It was a compound fracture of the fibula and tibia. Apparently it was a clean break, which is good news, but they won’t know if there is further damage until surgery is complete. He’s getting a pin placed in his leg tonight. No exact timetable yet. Looking like a minimum of 6 months before he can resume anything on the court. Likely out for the season.

As for Indiana I think they are a late lottery pick team and who know they may find the Stepehenson replacement to run with PG when he is back.

surgeryisfunParticipantPerhaps i can give a bit of information about such an injury and the treatment.
I just recently joined the forum but i have benn reading for years.( the correct term would be lurking).
Im a trauma surgeon and i have seen similar injuries quite a bit. Im from germany but the procedures are badically the same.
First off The broken leg will be put in some kind of splint to reduce movement between the broken parts of the bones because thids usually is the reason for severe pain.
Then X-rays will show what kind of fracture it is. Most of the tibia fractures can be reduced and stabilized with a pin or nail which lies intramedular. Nerve damage or damage of large vessels through injury or surgery is rare.
In most cases Fractures of the fibula dont have to be treated because the tibia does most of the wheight bearing.
Afterwards there will be at least 6 weeks with reduced wheight bearing of the fractured leg. Only clean horizontal breaks can have full wheight bearing.
After 6 to 8 weeks X-rays will show if the fracture healed well. If it did the patient can start to walk and train more and more.
I think after such an injury the recoverxy time to full contact scrimmage is at least 6 month . And we havent talked about any kind of complication like infection, compartment syndrome, delayed union of the bone and so on….
I wish paul george the best and a speedy recovery

NeggedLoveTradeRanterwhat was a great night turned into one of the saddest nights in nba history.
To see a young guy who dedicated his life to ball potentially having everything he ever loved snatched from him is horrible.
wish him a great recovery and even better come back I was so hurt over this last night any human let alone basketball fan would feel some way.

HitsterParticipantTragic news for Paul George, regardless of Team USA roster places, the Pacers placing next season and whether top players should play for their country. Our thoughts and hopes must be with Paul that he will make a full recovery and be able to function fully in a day to day situation and then as a basketball player.
I’m not even going to consider the recovery timespan and what sort of shape he may or may not come back in, I just want him to be able to recover and get healthy to resume his life first and foremost.
I’ve seen similar injuries occur in other sports, clips of which I would not consider ever posting as they are pretty damn gruesome and Paul’s looked nearly as bad as some of those. One from about 1996 invoving a Coventry City footballer always stands in my mind and that guy still walks with a limp.
I sincerely hope that Paul does recover fully in whatever timescale it takes and all our thoughts remain with him.
