Please nbadraft.net members just talk or comment about who is the better player between Baron Davis and Kyrie Irving. This topic of discussion is about them. Future point guard battle topic of discussions will be created in the future. Thank You

Point guard list does not include Isiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, and John Stockten because they are no doubt in my opinion the 3 greatest point guards of all-time. Also I left out steve nash because he is still in the NBA and a 2 time MVP. He would easily be the obvious choice to win in an fan opinionated point guard battle topic of discussion.

I keep hearing from some basketball fans and commentators that this generation has the most talented point guards of all-time, but I disagree. I grew up watching some of the most talented point guards ever who I think might be just as good or even better then some of the elite point guards that are in the NBA right now.

So I want to know from nbadraft.net members, who do you think is better between past and present point guards?

    Past point Guards:
Penny Hardaway, Jason Kidd, Gary Peyton, Rod Strickland, Tim Hardaway, Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury, Baron Davis, Steve Francis, Kevin Johnson, Mark Price

    Verses

    Present Point Guards:
Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Deron Williams, Kyrie Irving, Tony Parker, John Wall, Jrue Holliday, Damian Lillard, Rajon Rondo, Stephon Curry

2nd Point Guard Battle: Baron Davis VS Kyrie Irving

    Baron Davis:
I consider him to be the most talented and gifted point guard of all-time. He had the whole package. With the overall talent to do whatever he wanted to do on the basketball court. Could completely takeover a game with his passing abilty, scoring instincs, creativity, and great feel for how to play the game of basketball. Tremedous ball handler who could get to where ever he wanted to get to on the basketball court. Which allowed him to be an dynamic offensive player. Because he combined great ball handling skills with great passing instincts, great scoring skills, and tremendous finishing ability. A super strong and extremely athletic point guard who could overwhelm other point guards with his great physical tools. Was one of the most exciting and entertaining players to watch play back in the day when he was younger

    Kyrie Irving:
Kyrie is just a special special point guard prospect. I personally gave him a nickname in which I call him the ” Prodigy ” ( meaning – a person with exceptional talents or abilities ). He simply has an off the charts level of skills. I like the fact that he doesn’t rely on being a freakish athlete. He relies on being a tremendously skilled player who can utilize footwork, balance, bodycontrol, timing, anticipation, and great read and react skills. When it comes to making great basketball plays, he has the type of talent and basketball understanding that allows him to know what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. He is also one of the best below the rim finishers we have in the NBA. He has the great ability to make difficult lay-ups from every and any angle. He’s a talented scorer and shooter who has the ability to dominate offensively when needed. He’s also great in pick and roll situations and is an extremely dynamic player in the open court. His ball handling skill level is also simply amazing and allows him to be a slasher and offensive player who at times is just too hard to guard. Kyrie is truly a joy to watch and if he stays healthy, it is no doubt in my mind that he has a great chance to develop into the best point guard in the NBA.

So nbadraft.net members who is the better player / point guard – Baron Davis or Kyrie Irving?

I am ashamed to say I forgot how talented Baron Davis was, he was so explosive. I still have to take Kyrie simply because of his shooting abilities. Kyrie can cross up anyone in the league (RIP Brandon Knight) he has incredible court vision/passing skills/ and like I mentioned, the outside shot to go with an incredible FT%. As a point guard, he has everything, hes definitely a special player in the making.

It seems like a lot of basketball fans sometimes forget how talented baron davis was and they also sometimes forget how great of an athlete he was. He was easily one of the most athletic point guards of all-time before his numerous knee troubles ( example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-YehYyWyHU )

Baron Davis is one of my favorite point guards. He’s a guy who I tried to play a lot like because we were built physically the same way. I’m 6’3” 225lbs, very strong, muscles everywhere, and I’m also a pretty good athlete. And I use to spend many hours studying Baron Davis. And I truly believe that if baron stays healthy and would have dedicated himself to being the best he could be. Than he would have easily become the greatest point guard of all-time. He was just an extremely talented and extremely skilled point guard. The reason I take Baron Davis over Kyrie Irving. Is because baron is a better playmaker, floor general, passer, creator of offense for others, and defender. Baron also has a better feel for how to control the game from the point guard position ( example: how to dictate pace and tempo, directing offensive formations, making sure players get the ball in areas where they can be efficient and effective as offensive players, being a coach on the floor, being a vocal leader, knowing when and how to feed the hot hand, consistently making intelligent decisions, etc )

You really can’t compare Baron Davis with Kyrie Irving right now.

Baron Davis basically disregarded his career ambitions during the later portion of his career. There were games during his Clipper days where he would stop playing. Kyrie on the other hand, is young and still figuring out how to stay healthy. In summary, Baron was a great player who let himself fall into obsucrity, while Kyrie is a great player who has yet to establish a legacy.

In addition, they have different styles and impacts on the court. Baron Davis was a flashy athletic point guard, who was simply not as efficient as Kyrie.

In Baron Davis’s first 7 seasons his FG% was:

    99-00 .420
    00-01 .427
    01-02 .417
    02-03 .416
    03-04 .395
    04-05 .387
    05-06 .389

    Kyrie’s FG% so far:

    11-12 .469
    12-13.452

Now Kyrie has struggled with injuires and has yet to play more than 60 games in a season. But I think it’s safe to say that Kyrie has proven to be a more efficient primary scorer than Baron, despite Baron’s advantages in the athleticism department.

So, we’ll see. Right now, the two players are too different in terms of style of play and career trajectory. This could be a nice comparison after another 2 season though.

Irving pretty much for the reasons No Left said – shooting percentages. Davis, was never efficient enough shooting the ball.

Baron also took a year to wrestle the starting job from David Wesley whereas Kyrie I believe would have been ready enough to start over anyone entering the league (at a younger age).

whats the difference between Baron and Monte Ellis? Both are athletic scorers with awful shooting percentages. Baron was explosive but would basically just be an off guard today. Kyrie is top3 PG!
