festar35ParticipantI am loving the play of Indiana and especially Lance Stephenson, but he is due to be paid very soon.
If George gets to All-NBA team which is likely at this point he gets extra $ and the Pacers have stated through Larry Bird they will not go into luxury tax zone. So with the bonus for PG it leaves the Pacers about 4-5mil to sign Lance.
My solution is to move Hill and Copeland for cap room in the Off-season. Hill is due $8mil and Copeland $3.5mil this next season. Granted Stephenson will not get the full $15mill cap created, but it may just leave Indiana enough to find a starting point.

samosasParticipantIf you want the luxury of having a team good enough to win a title, pay the luxury tax. If you want a team good enough to get to the Eastern Conference Finals, don’t. I don’t buy this bullshit ‘sacrifice for the team and take a lower salary’. How about the owner sacrifice for the player and pay the luxury tax?

TRC1991ParticipantGeorge Hill hasn’t been really good this year, I think the Pacers’ weakest link is they don’t get a lot out of Hill for what they’re paying him

HitsterParticipantThe Pacers were content to keep have a largish salary level even when they weren’t contending between the JO/Reggie era and the current team. However the team has often run at a loss and with the new harsher tax rates, a relatively medium sized franchise like the Pacers may have to watch the cap level. They already have $65 million on the cap for next season before we consider them resigning Lance and possibly Danny Grainger, also add in that in 2015 Big Roy Hibbert could opt out and seek a rise on his $15.5 million salary.
So some juggling between trying to maximize this team’s chances of success and keeping within a reasonable amount of luxury tax may have to be undertaken by the Pacers’ front office. Luckily in the likes of Larry Bird, Kevin Pritchard and wily old Donnie Walsh, the Pacers have some of the most experienced executives in the NBA, so I’d back them to stike a reasonable compromise.

KHAM83ParticipantHill was never worth that contract. I don’t see them being able to move him. If a cheap, but talented true pg would be a huge pickup. Andre Miller at 5 million and is available would be perfect.

JD’s_TimberpuppiesParticipantAndre Miller is not a starting PG on a title contender cmon now. He’s slow and cannot guard a soul.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantI knew those West and Hill contracts would come back to haunt the Pacers.
Plus, how does one move Hill/Copeland in the off-season for cap room? They can’t trade for expiring contracts in the off-season because the contracts would already be expired. They would need to do it within the next month and a half.

festar35ParticipantThey are not expiring contracts, it is more if they can get some picks in return essentially or some cheaper players. Personally I have no problem with CJ Watson starting next season he has been spectacular.

JD’s_TimberpuppiesParticipantI do agree Hill is not having a very good year, but two things that don’t show up in the box score. His ability to blow by his defender and when defense rotates kicks to the open man creating open looks even if he isn’t the one getting the assist. The ability to stay in front of his man on defense allowing Hibbert to not have to rotate and stay down low to protect the rim. Hill needs to be retained as he fits perfect being a decent but not great PG on a team with plenty of star power. Also the team chemistry that the Pacers have is off the charts, cannot get rid of your Pg with such great chemistry. If it came down to it I would rather part with Scola and Copeland. If that wasn’t enough I would keep Scola and trade West. Don’t get me wrong West and Scola are phenomenal and great for that team but Hill has to stay. I think they will find a way to keep their starting lineup intact. The guys that will be gone for sure are Granger, Copeland and possibly Scola.

IndianaBasketballParticipantThis isn’t that difficult…
Chris Copeland is gone. He’s a great shooter, but it just hasn’t worked out. He doesn’t fit, which is why he’s never been in the rotation. Trade him for a second round pick. That’ll elliminate $3,135,000 off of the books.
Waive Luis Scola since only $940,946 of his $4,868,499 contract is guaranteed. That’ll elliminate $3,927,553 off of the books. Scola has played well, but waiving him is a no brainer IF it’s needed to re-sign Lance Stephenson. Part of the reason Scola was such an attractive trading target was because of the second year of his deal being not fully guaranteed.
Trading Copeland and waiving Scola if necesary would open up $7,062,553. That would drop the team’s total salary in 2014-2015 down to $58,784,380 ($65,846,933 – $7,062,553). Depending on what the 2014-2015 luxury tax threshold is (It’s $71,748,000 this season), the Pacers will have at least $12,963,620 ($71,748,000 – $58,784,380) to sign Stephenson. That number would increase since the luxury tax threshold will probably increase by $1-2 million. Now, Paul George is going to reach his incentives, so he will get the salary bump BUT I don’t know how that will affect his salary just yet. His incentives could raise his total contract from $82 million to $90 million, so I’m assuming his yearly salary could get a $1.5-2 million bump upwards. Regardless, the Pacers should have about $10-12 million to get a deal with Stephenson done. Personally, I don’t think Stephenson is worth more than $8-9 million per season. Maybe $40-45 million over 5 years.

Dpayton11ParticipantThere’s no way Bird lets Lance go. It’s just not gonna happen. He will be resigned somehow. I would bet my life on it.
