With Paul Millsap as good as gone, the cupboard will almost be completely bare in Atlanta next year. Their only hope is that a team engages them in a sign and trade, but that’s not a guarantee as Paul is an unrestricted free agent, and can just sign wherever he pleases. And holy crap…. how bad was that Miles Plumlee trade???? Atlanta must have HATED their decision to bring in Howard if they had to attach a better pick to Dwight in order to get MILES PLUMLEE! Mr. 2.5pts, 2.1rebs last year.

I think Schroeder played pretty good ball against the Wiz in the playoffs (24pts/4rebs/7assists), and its possible he could take a nice leap next year… but personally the thought of him having ‘carpe diem’ with the offense next year, and having either Kent Bazemore / Taurean Prince as potentially your 2nd & 3rd best players is horrific. If that’s the case, their only above average asset on the team will be Coach Bud.

If Paul Millsap walks and they stay as currently constructed, over / under 25 wins for this team next year?

Terrible GM skills. Could of tanked last year and had a top pick this year. Should of traded Paul at the deadline, not sign DH and gave Bazemore that terrible contract…

It’s hard being a Hawks fan.  I think they win 30 games next year…Hopefully the new GM can dump Bazemore salary.

Two GMs with two different motives.  The old GM was trying to save his job, so threw some money at Dwight Howard and decided to keep Milsap. The new GM wants to start a complete rebuild and tank mode. I agree though, this seems like a poor trade for Atlanta. Taking back Plumlee’s horrible contract which has more years left on it, in addition to trading exchange their 31st pick for the 47th looks terrible.  The Hornets had nothing to lose in this trade, and I think they easily won it even though Dwight’s all-star days are over. He’s easily still the best player in this trade.  The only thing that would make this trade less cringeworthy for the Hawks would be if they successfully tanked and secured a top 3 pick next year.

Good news for Philly, they need 4+ teams to be worse than the Lakers and they’ll keep the pick.

I am trying to shoot for the moon and get the #1 pick next year again….and the year after that with the Kings pick….4 #1 picks in a row or bust. The slight chance of adding Porter Jr. and Bagley to this core is spooky.

In reality I would be happy with adding another guard say Lonnie Walker with the 6th pick or so next year.

As I said before the season, Atlanta was going to move in a player development direction. I like the moves they’re making.

As a Hawks fan and in Atlanta, I’ve watched this all extremely closely.

Of course I would’ve preferred not signing Howard and Bazemore. But it happened under the old management. I also wish they had traded Millsap at the deadline instead of letting him walk for free. Again, this was under the old management. I would’ve loved starting the rebuild last year and having a top pick this year.

The Hawks are doing what’s best now considering the moves that had already been made. There’s no undoing the past. They’re preparing for the future.

I can’t wait until everyone who’s saying, "Wow, what a steal by Charlotte. I really like what they did here," then sees what a baby Dwight is and how he’s one of the hardest players to ever keep happy. I’m not sure how people don’t know this after what happened in Orlando, LA, Houston, and now Atlanta. Enjoy that headache. Just wait.

I agree with you, I watch about 50 Hawks games this year and went to a few. DH is a cancer, he looks lost out there and had poor body language. He just doesn’t care and now he’s been practicing 3’s. I like this trade, wish we would of got the pick and kept ours. Now if we can only move Baze.

Atlanta is still toying with mediocrity because they waited too long to accept a rebuild mentality.

They have a decent crop of good players on that team even without Milsap being there, they could find themself in the late lottery more often than the high lottery. Instead of just making the post season each season and fizzling out.

They have taken 1 step back and thats it.

I kept on saying last year that Bazemore is waayyyyy overrated and overpaid. This 3 and D craze has been a bane for a lot of teams, as they mostly overpay for players who are THEORETICALLY 3 and D. Its as if a certain player is immediately attached with a label of 3 and D and ups their stock significantly even if they arent skilled players.

Case in points: Bazemore, Demarre Carroll, Solomon Hill and Courtney Lee. Yuckkk.

Getting rid of Howard make them a better team, not worse, so no problem right now

They cleared some room but Miles Plumlee still is making 12 mil/yr for the next four years. They’re going to need to move him again at some point and it may cost them because he’s nowhere near that price. Bazemore was a tragedy. He got that Allen Crabbe love.

I’m glad the rebuild has officially started. My only regret is that we didn’t trade Sap during the season since it’s going to be really hard to get him to agree to a sign and trade AND find a willing trade partner. Trading Dwight for the garbage we got in return is the kind of trade I’ve come to expect from the Hawks. We NEVER win trades. The only good I can see coming out of this trade is that it gives us the kind of players who will allow us to tank like we should have years ago.

Unless they’re under orders to tank, I bet the will overachieve somewhat because of Coach Bud. He’ll fill out the roster with unheralded guys who defend, move without the ball and make smart decisions. He’s Coach Pop’s mini-me, after all.

Schroeder will have a breakout year. Prince could be something. Is Hardaway Jr. resigned?

There will be a few teams tanking next season – Nets,Atlanta, Kings possibly Pacers if PG13 moves on early. The Hawks rebuild will only really start next year. I’d back them to do a decent job at it, Mike Budenholzer has got the best out of his players during his time there and is from the Poppovich coaching tree and new GM Travis Schlenk had a dozen years at GSW and will have learnt from people like Jerry West.

They have had 10 seasons in the play offs so a couple of years rebuilding via the draft lottery will probably be accepted by the fans. They have a first rounder due from Cavs next year and one eventually due from the T-Wolves plus they own all their own picks, so they are in a decent position going forward.
