I think OJ Mayo’s problem is he tries to be a top 10 player in the league. He needs to realize he’s not a phenom anymore like he was in high school and somewhat in college. I feel he needs a new coach or someone to point him in the right direction. I think the problem is after being told his whole life he is the best of the best, he can’t accept a lower role. Watching a few grizzlies games, it always looks like he trys to be the man by shooting whenever he touchs it. I think he’s going to be a great player in 5 years if he ever realizes he’s not a 1st or 2nd scoring option.

He’s the prototypical 6th man these days of the mold of Jason Terry and Jamal Crawford, instant offense who is also capable of making plays for others, I’m not an OJ Mayo fan by any means but I don’t have much of a problem with the way he’s been playing

Coach  Hollins wants Mayo to shoot more..He wants more scoring fom those guard spots, thats why they drafted Selby and signed Pargo,2 shoot 1st point guards..

But i feel Mayo should be starting becuz they dont have anyone in their starting lineup that can hit outside shots consistently and keep the defense from sagging in on Marc and ZBO…

OJ Mayo clearly doesn’t fit in on the Grizzlies. I feel he’s a way better player than he’s shown.

He’s a far better player than he has shown the last couple years. Everybody seems to forget his first two years in the league.

You all may be disappointed in Mayo, but not I. I did not even focus on his offensive play against the Clippers, last night he stood out to me on the defensive end. As soon as he came in the game he forced a turnover. If you all payed close attention he showed last night he was being very heady playing the passing lanes and switching over to alter shots. Juice problem is he gets beat after the recovery on the quick step once he gets back to the spot.

OJ MAYO IS A STAR. He may never be a kobe, lebron durant. but the guy averaged 20 ppg as a rookie. They only reason he is in the dog house is because he had some off the court issues and rudy gay and zbo do most of the scoring so he kind of had to take the back seat. I think he can be a Brandon Roy or a Joe Johnson. Not saying similar games but he can have that kind of star power.

OJ Mayo isn’t a star and that’s the problem. He’s having a hard time adjusting to not being one. He’s not going to dominate the ball and take all of the shots in the NBA. He was the alpha dog in high school and college, and was even given that opportunity his first two years in the NBA, but he’s not an alpha dog. He’s not good enough to be one.

Yea, he averaged close to 20 points per game for Memphis during his first two seasons, but in 38 minutes per game, he averaged very little assists and very little free-throw attempts. And the team made no real improvements in the wins/loss column. People will say Rudy Gay’s numbers didn’t produce wins either, but I think it’s clear to see that Gay is a much better player than Mayo.

He’s a tweener. He’s doesn’t really have the physical attributes to play bigger than what he is and he can’t play the point. To be honest, he’s perfect in the 6th man/instant scoring role. He could start for some teams, but I don’t think he’s anything more than a third option in the NBA.

6th man. He is a role player. If Mayo is averaging 20 plus the team is a losing team. 6th man on a winning team suits the team best.

….go to a football comparison.  Yall remember all those guys that played for the Raiders and it looked as if they either werent very good or washed up, then when they left all of a sudden they were the greatest thing since sliced bread?  Kerry Collins and Randy Moss immediately come to mind.   Collins won very few games in Oakland, then went to Tennessee and had an amazing year.  Moss caught twice as many touchdown passes his first year in New England than he did in 2 years in Oakland.  My point is, no player can be considered a failure or washed up (Jamarcus Russell included) UNTIL they have failed with someone else besides Oakland.

In the NBA, this has happened a lot of times as well, one team that comes to mind is the Knicks.

To IB.  Mayo is an exceptional talent.  Is he a superstar, probably not.  Does he have star potential, I believe so.  I dont really agree that he wants to be a superstar…well, everyone does or why play, but I believe he can be comfortable in a good role on a winning team.   I do agree about him being a 3rd option, a very good one, like Byron Scott was.  Actually Scott was a great 3rd or 4th option on the Lakers, on a team not as good, Scott wouldve been a good 1st or 2nd option.

Mayo is one-dimensional, but unlike a lot of other one-trick ponys, he is not a liability.  He just needs a place where he can fit.

I am not going to say he is a star or a superstar, but what I want to mention as I referenced above about the Raiders is….that you just cant say Mayo is a 6th man, role player, or a guy who cant avg 18ppg while his team is winning.  There just is no proof of that UNTIL he plays for someone else besides the Grizz.  Until then, the jury will be out on his value as a player…but I need to see him in another system with other players before I tag him as being incapable of being a star on the level of Byron Scott….an All-Star or just below All-Star level player.
