I’ve seen Noah Vonleh a couple of times during the pre-season, and I was trying to put my finger on who he reminds me of.

Then, out of nowhere it hit me. Terrence Jones! Both players have ideal size for a PF at 6’9 with long arms. Both are athletic and run the court well, can step out and hit the 3pt shot, possess a few post skills, and hit the glass aggressively.

Noah obviously has a ways to go to match Terrence Jones’ production, but it will be interesting to see how their careers parallel once Vonleh gets consistent minutes.

     Kris Humphries?

Hump can hit the three now, it’s fairly legit.

Jones seems to have a higher bbiq than Vonleh, and can dribble.

Humphries was the top US youth swimmer as a kid, beating Michael Phelps head to head.

Vonleh jumped 37" at his nba combine, Humphries 36".

Vonleh 9′ standing reach, Hump 8’10.5".

Vonleh is an overrated athlete anyway. He posted Humpries-esque vert numbers, but everybody knows that explosiveness rarely, if ever, showed itself on the court at Indiana.

Vonleh is already on his second team, let’s not act like he’s some far superior prospect to Humphies.

Same size, same athleticism, same limited skill set that includes a decent jump shot out to 3 point line.

And how does swimming translate to athleticism again? I kinda agree with your second point, but that first line doesn’t belong in your comment 😉

Tim Duncan was a star swimmer, so maybe swimming is important for basketball scouting.  But probably not.

T Jones can play center in the NBA, Vonleh cannot.  So for the comparison, maybe Derrick McKey.  Maybe the Morris twins.  Maybe I don’t know.

& in Basketball, when the lights are brightest in the playoffs & the stress is highest, a guy w/ a bigger gas tank – who does not suffer fatigue at the same rate as opponents is a Massive advantage…

Most of us have played team sports & fatigue in challenging, actual game atmosphere just shuts your body down, it’s not like running out of energy at the gym – you are literally drained! It’s debilitating & if your opponent does not seem to be getting fatigued it absolutely messes w/ your head…

I forgot that Tim Duncan is from the Islands in the Carribean & that he was a lifetime swimmer… & he Never seems wiped out in big games… That also could explain how he is Still going strong at almost 40… And Basketball in the paint where the big biys roam is SO physical & it just saps your strength… That swimming must be a Massive advantage for Duncan – that was a Great post!

I have always read that Swimming really develops stamina b/c a person heart & lungs are being taxed to the extreme in those conditions – does anyone actually know if it Strengthens the Heart muscle or the Lungs??? The reason I ask is b/c the famous race horse Secreteriate – considered the greatest race horse in American history by many was autopsied after he died at the age of 25… And the doctors reported that he had a Massive heart – close to double the size of a "normal" horse… They explained that his massive heart gave him a Gigantic advantage b/c the Heart is a pump delivering fresh oxygen to the muscles thru the blood being pumped out from the heart…

I’m sorry I know I went a bit off topic, but our topic made me think of that & if the Cardiac muscles can be developed thru exercise (like swimming) like other muscles can be strengthened & developed – does anyone know anything about that???

any aerobic exercise strengthens the heart.

Good post about swimming and endurance in late/big game situations.

Humphries apparently set a handful of US youth swimming records, but moving to basketball was probably a smart move. I wonder who has made more money overall between Michael Phelps and Humphries.

Although indeed it helps stamina, being talented in swimming and basketball are two completely unrelated things. Same as saying that marathon runners would be good soccer players based on their stamina. Although there are exceptions, athletes generally have one true talent in which they can excell….

To say Vonleh is a far superior athlete than Humphries was just absurd.

Humphries being a better youth swimmer than BEST SWIMMER EVER Michael Phelps when they were kids was OBVIOUSLY worth mentioning.

Nobody was calling Vonleh a great athlete until he jumped slightly higher than Humphries at the Combine, and nobodies called Vonleh a great athlete since.

As somebody else noticed, I obviously nailed the Vonleh comparison by comparing him to Kris Humphries, though Vonleh likely won’t work hard enough to even merit that.

Humphries is a workaholic who takes his athleticism very seriously.

Jones comparison isn’t bad although Jones is a more explosive athlete imo.

Vonleh actually reminds me a lot of Trey lyles, although it’s kind of ridiculous to compare him to someone younger than him.

Physically, I see why you see T-Jones in him. But playing style and skill-wise, they are far apart. Jones likes to play in the high post and has way better handles than Vonleh. Jones is more of a slasher than a spot-up shooter. Vonleh just seems really stiff. He relies a lot on his jumpshot from what i’ve seen and it does not look all that good. He’s been bricking a lot lately.

Come to think of it, the comment above was pretty apt. Playing-style wise Vonleh and Humphries are very much alike. Good rebounders who box out well and are spot-up shooters on offense.

Vonleh is very young and already showing some skills I think people are underrating him. I don’t know how good he’ll be but I can easily see him being a starting quality forward in a few years. I believe he has the potential to be a Horford type player that contributes on both sides of the ball.

That Markieff Morris comparison was pretty good, Vonleh is probably going to be a better rebounder and lacks the behavioral issues. He may not develop Morris’s post game though.

I mean, who knows, right? He hasn’t played enough yet.  In college his upside should basically be the same as it is now.  I expect the Blazers to try and develop him like they did LMA, so their games should end up looking a bit alike.

Neither does Vonleh’s. He’s not a quick jumper, even if he can jump high with all the time in the world to gather.
