Right now Knicks pick first followed by the 76ers, Wolves and Lakers. Even though Okafor (has star potential) has had a great season I think Town’s game is more essential for the Knicks. Okafor is the better post player but a case could be made that Towns is better at pretty much everything else outside of fg%. His skill set fits the triangle (good face up shooter, decent post game, good passer from the elbow). Above all I just do not see Melo and Jahlil fitting together (iso players for the most part and for the most part they are average to below average individual defenders). While Towns has the chance to be a defensive anchor and his offense should develop nicely within a couple of years. Knowing Dolan he will go for the high money market guy which seems to be Jahlil, hopefully Phil undermines him.

As for Minny, Towns should clearly be their guy. He would compensate for Nikola’s lack of defensive presence (he also compliments nicely alongside Gieng who has a potential as a floor spacer, if they decide to trade Nikola. Plus he has the potential to be one of the best overall centers in the game. Rubio, Wiggins, Muhammad, Towns and Nikola with Lavine, Bennett, etc. of the bench…scary core. If Knicks take Jahlil and 76ers take Towns, I know shocker……on second though knowing Hickie it is a possibility, then I think they should trade down and go after Stanley Johnson and get compensated with other assets for moving down (teams such as SAC and BOS could use Mudiay or Russell).

As for the Lakers assuming Knicks take Jahlil, 76ers take (Russell or Mudiay) and Minny takes Towns, Lakers should be happy with either Russell or Mudiay falling to them. If draft does shake up and Towns is available it is a no brainer for the Lakers to get him. Randle and Towns would be a promosing front court. If Lakers fall to 5th pick Stanley Johnson is one hell of a consolation prize as well. Providing a great in between game, leadership and above all defense (has to work on finishing in the paint esp. in traffic or with contact; a bit wierd how someone as strong has him struggles might in the paint?).

Call me crazy but if the Lakers fall to the 5th spot I like Hezonja as the first wing off the board for the Lakers.  Stanley Johnson will be a solid player for along time but he doesn’t have nearly the offensive upside that Hezonja has.  My preference is the Euro.  Similar floor but way higher ceiling, and the Lakers need players that can become special.

Assuming they stay in the top 4 and for the purpose of this post get the top ick.  I am having a real hard time deciding between Okafor or Towns.  I may like Okafor better as an individual player, but the pairing of Towns and Randle is a match made in heaven and for that reason I think I would prefer the Lakers go with Towns at number 1.

Okafor doesn’t make it an easy decision though.  His offensive game is just so advanced its nutty.  He has more counters than most NBA bigs have moves.  He will be able to score at will, or at least create so much problems for opposing defenses that it will benefit his team in ways the stat sheet won’t say. If he even showed a small morsel of defensive skill and effort this year it would be a no brained for me.  However I have watched roughly 15 to 20 Duke games and have never seen him make a defensive play that stood out to me.  He routinely gives no effort on contesting shots around the hoop which is my biggest gripe.  At least fake at someone or something.

As a Laker fan all I am hoping for is to stay in the top 4.  I think the top 4 are all great talents,  I would love for the Lakers to snag one.

Mudiay to Min? What is your reasoning behind that especially with Rubio undercontract and Lavine developing.

meh, I’ve never understood reasoning like that. Yes personally I think Towns would be a better fit for Minny but if they see Mudiay as an elite talent then they should take him regardless of having Lavine or Rubio. Neither Rubio or Lavine has shown enough to justify passing on a potential franchise player for them.

I honestly believe that if you’re a struggling team in the NBA you draft the BPA nine times out of ten (an exception to that rule would be someone like New Orleans who should not take a PF with Davis in the fold).

The T-Wolves would I assume look at Towns as they have Pekovic at C and could use Towns at PF. I assume Wiggins will be long term SF and with Rubio at PG so they could possibly look at Russell to use as an SG when Kevin Martin moves on.

Minny would be a great place for Towns to go as there would be less pressure on him than if he want to LA or NY. He’d be able to be developed as 5th option in the starting 5 and not be under the spot light he’d be in LA or NY where he could be seen as a possible franchise changer as both will want to become win now sooner than the T-Wolves. If KG is still with the T-Wolves in some capacity then he’d be a great mentor for Towns.

I like Okafor as a fit in NY, he’d be able to learn the triangle from day one and has a decent passing game to fit in with the Knicks system.

Mudiay I personally feel would be a perfect fit in LA, Byron Scott helped make CP3 a franchise level player. Mudiay would have Kobe alongside him in backcourt to mentor him and if Nash was retained in a none playing role would have another elite former PG to pass on knowledge.

I can’t see J.Okafor succeed in a pressure packed environment like NY or LA(even with Melo and Kobe around)

I would love to see him in play for Denver or even Boston(I know a few fans that would pay to see Okafor vs. Embiid over the next 10 years)

I can also the 76ers taking Okafor or Towns if they were to win the 1st or 2nd pick in this year’s draft (just to maximize their assets and protect their Frontcourt from injury)

Honestly, a lot a teams in the Top 10 are hoping to land the Top Pick and the rights to Okafor or Towns, but it would cause a few of them to consider their options(If Minny gets the pick, do they trade Pek, ditto for Orlando and Denver with Vucevic and Nurkic)

I think a mini nightmare for Sacramento would be getting the 1st pick and having to choose between Ok and KAT and passing on Okafor because Cousins is in place…Could back fire or be the best move for that franchise…

Philly could easily take Towns or Okafor, they only really have Noel and Embiid as keeps in their current frontcourt line up and they could split 96 minutes between a 3 man rotation.

Orlando have Pekovic on a hefty contract and have a fair few prospects at PF, how they would work it out if they had a shot at Okafor or Towns I would need to think carefully about.

Denver moved both Mosgov and McGee this year so could easily fit either Towns or Okafor alongside Faried and Nurkic in their frontcourt. If Denver did get a good offer for Nurkic and they knew they could draft Towns or Okafor then they might consider it as Nurkic was a mid first rounder and his value is probably higher than that now. But I think they only make a move if the offer is too good to turn down.

There was a report on Hoopshype yesterday that the Knicks had put out feelers to see what value they could get for their first round pick. Everything would depend on where it landed in the lottery and no mention was made whether it was to make a K-Love-Wiggins type trade or if Phil and co were possibly seeing what type of trade downs there might be.

Hitster, I like your take on Philly.  Yeah, why not look at Karl Anthony Towns?  The could be ELITE inside with Towns and Noel playing next to Embiid.  3 big man rotation.

They should do that unless they really, really like Mudiay.  But to me, from what I have heard, he just sounds similar to Tony Wroten anyway.

I like Towns more than Okafor.  Okafor looks like a guy that can play center and post you up and score on you BUT he will give up points too, AND he doesn’t have elite Tim Duncan size.

Towns looks like his baseline is a bigger, longer Al Horford which is pretty dang good.  Actually, close to a prototype big in "today’s NBA."  He will give you productivity on BOTH sides of the ball.  He can help anchor a team on offense AND defense.

To me, I like Towns at 2 and Mudiay at 2.

Might be better off getting the 2nd pick.

At 3, who knows which big will be the guy to get (assuming you don’t like D’Angelo Russell)?  Okafor, Willie Cauley-Stein, or Frank "Mr. Stretch 5" Kaminsky?  If I need a center I would think about trading down for WCS or Kaminksy.

Picks 1 and 3 are landmines.  More value at 2, 4, and 5.  Then somewhere after that, you want to trade down again to get the guy you NEED.

Utah drafted Kanter when they already had Jefferson, Millsap and Favours and that rotation never really worked and now Utah only has one of them left. But I agree Philly could easily draft another big to go with Noel and Embiid.

My worries would be you’d have Embiid and whoever they drafted both as effective rookies next year and Noel would only be playing his second season so you’d have a very young frontcourt. The guys could learn on the job but I’d really like Philly to get a good veteran in there alongside them, the guy need not play a lot and the younger guys could take the major minutes but having a wise older head on the bench and on court could be a big advantage.

We have not seen Noel and Embiid play together let alone either Noel or Embiid and which big they might draft so working out who fits in best with each other, who plays anchor etc would need to be thought out carefully.

As I always say, everything will depend on where the draft lottery balls land as until then no GM let alone fan can guess who the top teams will take.
