From the small sample size I’ve seen this year, he is definately a work in progress on both the offensive and defensive end.  With Saric and Embiid coming on board next year, i’m hoping these two are the cornerstones of the franchise.  If they have the number one pick, you definately take Okafur which leaves you with Embiid at PF and Okafur at center and maybe Saric at SF.

My problem is both Noel and MCW. First, the latter is still young, but too many turnovers and his shot selection and FG% is terrible. Noel is too small for center, but that seems like his only natural position. I think hes about 5 years off from hitting his potential and getting his body bulked up.

Do you see a scenario where these are moved for some draft picks? I’d like to see them get a nice efficent point guard who shoots at least 45% with about 2.5 turn overs a game or less. Combine this with Okafur, Saric and Embiid and this team has some nice potential.

I definitely could see Noel and MCW getting traded, especially if Philly ends up with Okafor in this year’s draft. Noel still has the potential to be an elite shot blocker which will entice some teams to take a chance on him if Philly is looking to deal him for a pick. As for MCW, it might be harder to find a trade destination for him since the PG position is so deep right now. Teams might not want to give up a draft pick on a PG who can’t shoot too well when they pick up an efficient back-up PG through free agency or the draft. I’m curious as to when and/or if Philly will pick up a veteran to pair with all of their young guys or if they will be content with having a line-up of guys under 25 and build up with that group.

Noel has been pretty bad on offense, but his defense has already been pretty impressive. The Sixers have been a competent team on defense this season, and Noel has been a major part of that success.

But regardless, I would only be a little surprised if neither Noel or MCW are on the team next year. The only guy who should definitely be around is Embiid.

When I look at Noel, I see Samuel Dalembert. He won’t hurt you or help you much if he is on your team.

I think it is probably unfair to judge Nerlens Noel yet. I carry a similar concern about him not having the size to be a center when the other team has a real one, and his offensive game is limited to what others set up for him at the rim. That said, coming off a serious knee injury, he needs the benefit of the doubt right now.  His field goal percentage on non-dunk attempts is terrible (67-198). I have to believe as he shakes off the rust and regains full confidence in his body he can do better. It is also hard to know the impact he can have defensively when the team is not playing to win. If he can stay healthy, then I would think next season will be a much truer opportunity to see what he ought to be. By the way, I am more forgiving of the player coming off an injury needing time than an organization collecting players with situations that dictate for patience. I don’t think Hinkey deserves more leash because he drafted Noel, Embiid, and Saric. Their injuries or contract issue was known when he took them.

Michael Carter-Williams and Tony Wroten are both beneficiaries and victims of the tank plan. On one hand, they get ball in their hands and a green light to attack. Any guard would love that freedom. On the other hand, it is not how they are going to play if or when Philadelphia grows as a team. Not only is this not going to be their role down the line, but some of the inefficiency in their numbers is a function of the role and the limitations of the other players on their team. A team can’t run a four corner offense in the NBA, something has to happen every 24 seconds. I think an argument can be made that the Sixers aren’t developing these two as much as simply using them. It is likely that both guys will up for extensions or free agents before Philadelphia finds some kind of normalcy. Would a Sixer fan want to pay them knowing that part of the market is set by the empty numbers they are accumulating and that their role going forward is going to decrease (and that might result in their flaws being more in focus)?

He’s 20 and not even 40 games removed from his high school days.  Let’s reserve judgment.
