NBPA Top 100 Camp Preview, Updated Rosters and Team Notes

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Top 100 High School Camp commenced yesterday and will begin games later today in an event that features the number one player in the country as well as the fourth best player in center Andre Drummond and power forward Brandon Ashley.

The Top 100 Camp gathers some of the best high school talent in the country and features more than 15 of our top 25 prospects in the class of 2012. The class of 2013 is also strongly represented as numerous Watch List players are participating highlighted by small forward Kuran Iverson and center Nerlens Noel.

The final rosters for the event have been released so we took the time to organize each player by the team they are on and include all the information about them you’ll want to know from their height and weight to college choice and much more. We also plugged in some team notes after each of the rosters. However, some prospects were unable to attend the event for various reasons so some players were last-minute additions and we aren’t sure which teams they will play on.

News I have heard (all from Dave Telep of ESPN, who is the director of the camp):

    • Mitch McGary has been dominant. Supposedly played really well against Andre Drummond
    • Tyler Lewis has looked great, and had 19 points in his first game
    • Amile Jefferson had 20 points last night, and has looked really solid
    • Villanova’s recruiting class seems to be incredibly STACKED. Daniel Ochefu has been playing really well, Ryan Arcidiacono looks like one of the better PG’s in this class and Savon Goodman is a solid wing prospect. They have been trying to recruit Amile Jefferson, a PF from PA, as well
    • Telep seems to be backing Devonta Pollard for a potential McD’s spot come next year in Chicago (back-to-back years of McD’s in the Windy City)

I am sure there will be more, but that is what I have for now. If you think I am leaving someone out, read the roster reports on what I have posted, they tell of injuries and notable absences.

I guess Drummond came to the party and put up 16 points (after only having 2 and 4 in his first couple games). He and Amile Jefferson’s Mavericks team still got rocked though, 93-69 by a Heat team lead by Danrad "Chicken" Knowles and Ricardo Gathers (how unlike real life). Here is a rundown after three games, and the synopsis of the morning games today:

    Session III Game Recaps
    Heat 93 Mavericks 69
Five players in double digits led by Ricardo Gathers and Chicken Knowles with 14 each were enough as the Heat melted the Mavericks 93-69. Ronnie Johnson, Kellen Dunham and Tony Parker all added 10 points to the cause. The lopsided victory overshadowed a very good performance by Amile Jefferson, who continues to pile up points in an impressive fashion finishing with 23. Andre Drummond added 16 points and snatched 5 boards in his marquee match-up with big Parker inside.

    Grizzlies 79 Lakers 68
Terry Henderson scored 15 points and the Grizzlies remained unbeaten at 3-0 with a convincing 79-68 victory over a tough Lakers squad. Anthony Bennett continued to play steady basketball scoring 10 points in the victory. The Grizzlies were swarming on the defensive end of the floor creating havoc and showing why they are the team to beat at this camp. Adam Woodbury and Daniel Ochefu were lauded for their defensive effort throughout the victory. The win squashed an outstanding effort by Rasheed Sulaimon, who scored a game high 22 points including four 3’s for the Lakers in the loss. Marcus Paige added 13 in the loss and played very steady keeping his team in the game up until the end.

    Celtics 91 Spurs 83
Jordan Price continued his fine NBPA Top 100 Camp experience posting 19 points and moving the Celtics to a gaudy 3-0 with an upscale 91-83 victory in Friday morning action. A 48-42 contest at the half never got to out of hand thanks to a barrage of three’s from Ron Patterson late in the second half, he would finish with 19 leading the Spurs. Joining Price in the scoring column, Glenn Robinson added 14 markers; Raphael Davis chipped in with 12 and was simply outstanding on the defensive end against Gabe York holding the scoring sensation to only 11 points. Jerome Hairston added 10 points in the win. Cameron Ridley and Marcus Smart added 15 and 14 respectively for the Spurs in the loss.

    Magic 64 Thunder 59
The Magic did their best to make the Thunder disappear and move to 3-0 with a very hard fought 64-59 victory in Friday second session morning action. Katin Reinhardt was tough in clutch time converting foul shots and a short jumper and lever allowing the Magic to relinquish the lead in the latter stages of the game. Reinhardt led the Magic with 13 points followed closely by Andrew White with 11 and Yogi Ferrell with a 10 spot. Rodney Purvis made his camp debut with 15 points despite the losing effort. Nate Britt and Danuel House added 13 and 11 respectively for the Thunder. The proposed point guard match-up of Ferrell and Tyler Lewis never materialized as Lewis was unable to compete due to illness.

    Bulls 71 Hawks 60
Post play took center stage as Brandon Ashley and Shaquille Cleare dominated inside combining for 32 points leading the Bulls past the Hawks 71-60. Cleare owned the offensive glass and Ashley clearly was a man possessed in his marquee match-up with Mitch McGary. Omar Calhoun added 17 markers in the win, while Mike Gesell played solid from the lead guard spot throughout the day. Shawn Smith was the only player for the Hawks in double figures with 12.

    Session IV Game Recaps
    Spurs 68 Grizzlies 54
The triumvirate of Ron Patterson, Cameron Biedschied and Cameron Ridley scored 14, 13 and 11 points respectively as the Spurs heeled the Grizzlies from the ranks of the unbeaten 68-54 in Friday evening action. The Grizzlies found scoring to be quite an issue with no players landing in double digits. Anthony Bennett led with 9 points in the discouraging loss.

    Lakers 72 Bulls 69
Anton Gill drained an off balance leaner from three giving the Lakers a thrilling 72-69 win over a surging Bulls squad in early Friday night action at the NBPA Top 100 Camp version 2011. Jeremy Hollowell was high scorer for the Lakers dropping 14 and Jordan Tebutt chipped with 10 in the close victory. Brandon Ashley was a beast on the interior finishing with 23 points for the Bulls in the close loss.

    Thunder 97 Mavericks 82
Nate Britt, picking up the slack for the under the weather Tyler Lewis, busted out for a camp-high 30 points leading the Thunder to a resounding 97-82 victory over the Mavericks. The contest featured a couple of intriguing marquee match-ups with Rodney Purvis of the Thunder getting the better of J-Mychal Reese by the tune of 18 points to 9 in the victory. Amile Jefferson did his best to keep the Mavericks in the game scoring 26 points and his running mate T.J. Warren managed 20 despite the margin of victory. In the games other marquee match-up Chris Walker of the Thunder responded huge with 13 points and five rebounds while matching up with Andre Drummond, who finished with 5 points and 7 boards. Danuel House added 12 points for the Thunder in the victory.

    Magic 73 Heat 64
Roscoe Allen dangled 15 points and Yogi Ferrell added 10 as the Magic pushed their camp record to 4-0 with a slick 73-64 win over a tough Heat squad. The usual scoring threats for the Magic came up cold but Allen was ready for the save with his personal camp high this evening. Ronnie Johnson finished with 14 points leading the Heat. The Magic finish as the top seed for tomorrow’s playoff action.

    Celtics 59 Hawks 56
The Celtics rode the coattails of scoring machine Jordan Price, who finished with 16, to remain as one of the camps two unbeaten squads with a close 59-56 victory over a determined Hawks squad. The Hawks closed the gap late and after pulling to within three had a chance to tie as Mitch McGary, who led all scorers with 19 points, rimmed off a three at the buzzer.

    From what i have seen

Drummond is very talented but kinda lazy

The Nate Britt kid can score which is surprising because he’s always been more of a passer in his career

The McGary kid look like a man child, alot like Psycho T in the way he plays hard all the time and is very physical

Jefferson i very skinny but finds ways to score on stronger big men (he’s been one of the best players here)

The Shaq kid is a straight BEAST. Needs to lose weight though.

Damn i wish i was playing instead of just watching

Got some nice prospects at this camp…Reebok is holding a top 100 camp also with the best players in the nation.  Theres only one 8th grader invited to that camp and its MALIK NEWMAN.  He is the #1 ranked 8th grader by Hoop Scoop and Hype basketball and from what his peers have said and what his game film has shown, he will be special.  Depaul coach said that Malik could start for them at PG right now.  The trainer of Monte Ellis and Mo Williams when they were growing up in Mississippi who trains Malik as well said Malik is better right now at this age than they were.  Heres the article…http://www.scoutsfocus.com/maliknewman.html…Heres another SICK highlight from the 8th grader….

Hopefully he develops because most of the time top players in 8th grade end up dropping pretty far because others catch up and they happen to be more developed at a early age

Is a fricking moron. Why would you say something like that about an 8th grader? Can this guy get a life? You need a team to win a championship, and as the earliest this guy will be chosen in the NBA draft would be 2016 (most likely, that is if he continues to develop and mature), than how in the heck will we know what he will look like by than?

Does he really need to forecast the future for a kid who has not even played an HS game? WHY? He compared a tall 6th grader to a 7 footer, based off of a quarter and a lie about his genetics. How is that fair? Well, I would say let him develop, than make obnoxious comparisons, you effing snake oil salesman. I would say, this guy has about as much credibility as Dan Quayle has in a spelling bee. Seems like he is not much more than a name dropper, and does incredibly little as far as evaluating prospects according to any basketball information.

    More creepy Clark Francis stuff:

As always, I wish the best for the kids, and hope he does incredibly well in his career. I also hope he gets a chance to prove himself before being labeled anything, especially at such a young age. Obviously this guy has great genetics, and probably should grow, but you just need to keep working and not listen to people trying to make money by trying to crush kids dreams before HS. Yeah, saying he will be a great scorer is a compliment and all, but that he will never win a championship? That is just a ludicrous thing to say.

lol..agreed. These day’s fans want to hear about the next best thing earlier than usual and scouts want to be the one to say ” i saw him first and predicted he would be a star first”. Back in the day people made the argument you made when scouts were talking about how good a Jr in H.S was. By the time we are alot older scouts will be talking about the top elementary school kid and ESPN will probably show Jr H.S games on TV
