NBA talks break down over money; preseason canceled, games in jeopardy

NEW YORK — The NBA canceled the remainder of the preseason today and will wipe out the first two weeks of the regular season if there is no labor agreement by Monday.

Commissioner David Stern and Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver made the announcement after owners and players met for about four hours but came no closer to a deal.

"We were not able to make the progress that we hoped we could make and we were not able to continue the negotiations," Stern said.

No further meetings are scheduled, making it even more likely the league will lose games to a work stoppage for only the second time.

Stern and Silver said owners offered players a 50-50 split of basketball-related income, far below the 57 players were guaranteed under the previous collective bargaining agreement but more than the 47 percent union officials said was proposed to them.

Whatever. The only numbers that matter now are the millions that could be lost when arenas are dark.

"The damage will be enormous," Silver said.

Players had offered to reduce their BRI guarantee to 53 percent, which they said would have given owners back more than $1 billion over six years. But they aren’t going any further, at least for now.

"Today was not the day for us to get this done," players’ association president Derek Fisher said. "We were not able to get close enough to close the gap."

With superstars such as Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett standing behind him, union executive director Billy Hunter said the players’ proposal would have translated to at least $200 million per season — a sizable chunk of the $300 million owners said they lost last season.

But that gap remains, and the sides are still divided on the salary cap structure. And like in 1998-99, when the season was reduced to 50 games, players say they will not accept a bad deal just to get back on the court quicker.

"Our guys have indicated a willingness to lose games," Hunter said.

I’ve been saying all along that the players aren’t dropping seven whole percentage points… It’s just not happening.

Dropping four percentage points is honestly enough. The rest should be on the owners to adopt a more aggressive revenue sharing plan. The owners just can’t expect the players to take 100% of the responsibility of the losses.

I think the ball is in the owners’ court now because I don’t think the players are dropping below 53% and they aren’t going to agree to a hard cap or anything that even looks like one. The owners need to meet amongst themselves and get a revenue sharing plan together. I mean, because the players are giving back enough to cover last season’s losses PLUS give the owners back more money over the rest of the CBA agreement.

This is a growing game… Revenue was higher than EVER last season. The owners can’t expect the players to be this stupid to give up such a big piece of the pie when the game is growing.

The most reasonable thing I have heard anyone say about the lockout since it has started. Well done, I would give you 50 points if I could.

"Our guys have indicated a willingness to lose games,"

That statement right there and the 50/50 rejection(if true) proves that players truely DON’T GIVE A  F@CK about the fans, and that it is all about the money(we all knew that already, but players quick to say its not)

A bunch of rich people (owners and players) arguing over who gets what of the money SUCKS to me. I watch sports for a reason: to get away from all that. That’s the best dam thing about sports!
