slash787ParticipantHere is a breakdown of day 3 of the NBA Summer League
http://www.beforethescore.com/nba-summer-league-2014.html
Elfrid Payton – The Glove 2.0 was all over the place today. Payton went 5-5 for 12 points with 9 dimes, 8 rebounds, and 1 steal. Payton was like a swiss army knife on the court. Elfrid dominated fellow rookie Nick Johnson and put on a clinic in all aspects of the game. Payton can play. He will have struggles as all rookies experience but you can see that he is here to stay.
Willie Reed – After being ruled ineligible to play at Saint Louis Reed declared for the 2011 draft where he went undrafted. Over the past three seasons Willie has played over seas, in the D-League, and for the Kings/Grizzlies. The past two summer league games Reed has gone straight skittles (beast mode). In 18 minutes of action in his first game Reed had 6 points, 3 reb, 1 stl, 1 ast, and 4 blocks. In his second game he played 24 minutes and put up 18 points, 6 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl, and 4 blocks. It looks like the Pacers have found their back up Center. At this point he could out perform Roy Hibbert (2 points and zero rebounds) is not a large bar to set. We will keep an eye on the Reed the rest of the summer to see if he can keep it up.

slash787ParticipantI know he is the son of the legendary John Stockton and he had a decent game but overall 7 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal along with 4 fouls isn’t worth mentioning for a guy that is 25 years old. I try to focus on rookies and players that have a chance of contributing or making a roster. He has no upside and no chance of ever doing anything in the NBA. His claim to fame is being John Stockton’s kid and that’s about it.

JoeWolf1David is the better Stockton, he’s playing with Pheonix’s summer league team. He’s tiny, and a long shot by far, but with the Suns’ high octane offense, he could really rack up the assists in Vegas.

providencefriars1ParticipantPeople talk about how KCP is dominating the summer league but Mason Plumlee has been the best player thus far. He will be able to play both the four and the five and is a terrific finisher at the rim. He is strong and has great footwork and it is evident he is ready for an increased role with Brooklyn. Plumlee also threw a few great passes from the high post which shows how versatile Brooklyn’s frontcourt will be with Lopez, Garnett, and Teletovic.
Mitch McGary was terrific today especially with his ability to handle the ball in the open court. He displayed pretty good vision while handling the ball too and his game provides different strengths than the rest of the Thunder front court. I can see his skill set complimenting Adams in bigger lineups. and Ibaka in smaller lineups.
I like what I saw with Aaron Gordon too. He looks like he will be a legit small forward in time and is still very young at 18 years old. The jumper will improve as he has pretty good form and lift.
DeWayne Dedmon is an interesting prospect because he is so big and plays so hard. He will have a long career as an end of the bench big.
I was very high on Fuquan Edwin pre College bball season, but he struggled with injuries all season and looked out of his league today.
Unfortunately I couldn’t catch the Celtics-Pacers game

King CaluchaParticipantI didn’t check the stats, but Mason Plumlee was passing the ball really well. Not that either is going to do that with the pro team.
Mitch McGary handing the ball was impressive. I saw him put some great screens, rolling to the basket and rebounding the ball like a pro. His back-to-basket game needs improvement, though.

JoeWolf1Tarik Black put together another solid game. He’s put up 10.5 ppg and 5 rpg in only 20.3 mpg for Houston. He wasn’t exactly a probable draft pick after being overshadowed by Joel Embiid and fouling at a rate that would make Mark Madsen shudder, but he does have NBA size, athletic ability, and some translatable skill. He could have some appeal as a 5th big man.
He did "Mozgov" Cameron Ridley…

ballislyfe25ParticipantI didn’t watch too much of Elfrid Payton during the year but he has impressed me through Orlando’s two summer league games. From the highlight/scouting videos he seemed to play hard on both ends, control the game well from the point, and use his left hand well. In the two games he has done the same and his on ball defense has stood out as well. He attacked the paint hard but not out of control and when he beats his defender he usually takes a smart shot or makes the correct pass.
Although it is a small sample size, Orlando has to be happy with what they are seeing from Payton. He and Victor Oladipo have the potential to form an athletic, intelligent, and tough backcourt.

ballislyfe25ParticipantAlmost a triple double in summer league, with 9 assists? That’s got to be a record lol.
