With the growing popularity of the NBA both within the United States and Internationally, I feel like sometime soon there must be more expansion teams added to the NBA. Expansion team bring new fans to the NBA as well as more competition that can help create a more interesting NBA.

These 2 links show Maps of the USA, one with population density, and the other with NBA team locations.

    http://www.mapofusa.net/us-population-map.gif
    http://zipbox.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/nba-team-map.jpg

Those along with major city Populations, I came up with a short list of potential target cities for the NBA to expand to. I believe if there is an expansion it’ll be 2 teams to keep things even, so which 2 cities do you think should be considered or are the most likely? Also I know a lot of the international teams are unlikely in the next expansion, but what ones do you think are the most likely in the future (timeframe unknown).

    USA
    Austin, Texas
    Jacksonville, Florida
    Columbus, Ohio
    Seattle, Washington
    El Paso, Texas
    Nashville, Tennessee
    Las Vegas, Nevada
    Louisville, Kentucky
    Albequerque, New Mexico
    Fresno, California
    Kansas City, Missouri
    Virginia Beach, Virginia
    Omaha, Nebraska
    Wichita, Kansas
    Honolulu, Hawaii

    International
    Vancouver, Canada
    Montreal, Canada
    Winnipeg, Canada
    Calgary, Canada
    San Juan, Puerto Rico
    Mexico City, Mexico
    Sidney, Australia
    Beijing, China
    London, United Kingdom
    Berlin, Germany
    Madrid, Spain
    Paris, France

For the near future expansion my picks would be
    Seattle, Washington
    Vancouver, Canada

These two are obvious as they both had a team at one point and are on the west coast. Seattle needs the Sonics back period. Vancouver would be wise as it would help with the internationalization of the NBA.

For the Distant future International cities
    Beijing, China
    Sidney, Australia

Beijing is obvious, basketball is growing like crazy in China, I spent time in Australia and basketball was a pretty popular sport there so that is why I like the Sidney expansion.
Obviously if either of these expansions happened the schedules for thes team would be weird, maybe like half the season on the road in the US, and the other half just staying at home for home games? It’d be weird.

Thanks let me know what you think!

You should watch last weeks episode of "Any Given Wednesday" with BillSimmons on HBO. Mark Cuban breaks down why a vast majority of owners are against expansion for the foreseeable future.

Right now is the worst time to talk about an expansion, we are seeing one team hog all the talent, we are seeing very little competition in the playoffs and the West going from three great teams (GSW, OKC, SAS) to two.

Why would you want more teams? Right now it looks like you would actually rather have less. I’m not saying we should decrease the number of teams, that’s silly. But increasing it right now would be absurd.

Warriors, Spurs and Cavs have a disproportionate amount of superstars on their teams (where others have 1 or none). This dilutes the talent pool in the rest of the league. Expansion at this point would dilute it further. It doesn’t make sense at the moment.

Until each NBA team has it’s own NBADL affiliate.  I’m all for expanding the game internationally, but given the lenghty schedule and the taxing nature of cross continent flights, It’s just not realistic right now to be putting teams in China, or Australia.  Vancouver had a chance and it didn’t even last 10 years, 6 to be exact.  Granting them another franchise based on an already failied operation would be foolish.  Seattle deserves a team, no question, but I think there are better places to put a team than Vancouver.  How about St. Louis or Pittsburgh?

I do not think the NBA should expand. However, if they do expand, they should consider Monterrey Mexico.

It is a large city (similar metro area to San Francisco/Oakland). It is relatively close to the U.S. boarder so the flights would not be difficult (longest flight would be 6 hrs) . It is supposedly the most “Americanized” city in Mexico. It is a wealthy city. Not to be insensitive, but getting the government to cooperate in Mexico can at times be relatively easy (just grease the right palms). This means getting a new stadium might not be that difficult.

I think that the next move should be into Mexico. The TV market you open up directly is large, but you also would significantly increase interest in all of the country (think Mexico City!!!).

If I were a billionaire with a struggling team this is what I would do.

Other cities to consider would be Seattle (lock), and Vancouver (but I would lean towards Monterrey).

Seattle might get a new team but it probably will not be the Sonics.   Clay Bennett still owns the rights to the names/colors/logo etc… he "left" in Seattle but because the city of Seattle broke their contract with him (the one that got him away from Key arena)  he can now charge them for the use of his property. And with how much money the forced him to pay to move his team bet that he will look to recouperate his losses.

I have always wanted a Euro Division with in the NBA.   Take the 5 best Euro clubs. And assimilate them into the NBA. (Would make for some long road trips)

You know, typically every single year I’m hyped about adding new teams. But after this offseason BS it’s just simply not going to work. There is absolutely no balance in the NBA, this is a 2-4 team league with everyone else being irrelevant door mats for those top 2-4.

If you add even more teams you’re just going to spread the talent even wider across the teams, effectively making teams EVEN WORSE than some already are.

Just no point until something is done about super teams, simple as that. Please make the NBA great again…it may be gaining in popularity from bandwagon fans, but it’s starting to lose it’s old school & long time fans. We just want parity, why is that so hard to ask?

when in the history of the league has there been clear parity though? theres always been a small number of teams you can count on one hand that are considered true contenders while a second tier that are dark horses for the tile even though they are a top 4 team in their conference. then after that you have your play-off teams then your post-season bubble teams then afterwards the lotto bound teams that are rebuilding or just plain sucking. its been like this for a long long time now.

parity in the NBA exits on the fact that the teams on top are never always the ones on top, unless youre a top organization such as the spurs that has been able to jump in and out of the category of top contender and dark horse for the past 2 decades. other than them, we’ve seen a number of teams become the heavy favored ones. with the exception of the past couple of years, the warriors for a long time was one that wasnt even considered as a dark horse for the title but had more lotto seasons than they did as sure post-season bound ones.

im just curious what form of parity you would want the NBA to either bring back or create?

& it Severly diluted the Talent pool in the NBA………

OKC – one of Only 4 Real Championship contenders last season (Spurs, Cavs, Warriors, Thunder)

have just had their nuts snipped & while they are still a good team, they are now added to the List of 27 teams who have ZERO chance to win the NBA Title.

I Luv Kawhi Leonard but he just does not score enough to be a #1 option on Championship team, LaMarcus Aldridge is 31 & he is No Tim Duncan – not even close……

So while I do still put the Spurs in the Mix, they match up Terribly w/ Golden State BEFORE KD joined them…… So it’s basically Cleveland in the East & Golden State in the West

Do we Really want to Dilute the other 28 teams even more???
