Are ya’ll worried about a lockout?
Personally I think the owners are either lying or overreacting about losing money so they can gain more money; and if the players take cuts what about Stern?

Im Your FatherParticipantObviously I would hate for there to be a lockout, since I love the NBA. But, if a bunch of players ended up staying in school, it could make for some fantastic college basketball. As a Duke fan I love the though of Irving and Rivers playing together. And UNC and UK would both be great too. I miss the days when even the stars stayed at least 2 years.
But, as I said, even still I’d rather there not be a lockout.

kaceyParticipantIf negotiations are this bad, then there would appear to be a lockout. I would be surprised if the NBA cut any teams though. Also, no way in the hell the players accept a 30% pay cut. That just isn’t going to happen. These teams aren’t losing that much money. Regardless, there will probably be a small pay cut across the board. Amount of years and money guaranteed for free agents will be cut down as well.
I know there was talk of helping NBA teams out in the case of a player not performing to his big contract (ala Eddy Curry). This would help to an extent, but you can’t just let these teams off the hook so easy. There would still need to be some kind of punishment, maybe lose a draft pick, or something.

Da1potParticipantPlayer contracts are just going to keep getting bigger and bigger, there is no way they will be cut. Stern can’t just go and cut teams though…… That would be an embarassment to the league having to cut actual franchises….

SwatLakeCityParticipantThe NBA needs to install a hard cap, like Hockey and alot of other sports have. A soft cap just doesn’t work, especially when you have money hungry players like the NBA does.

andxxxParticipantThe owners are the ones over paying players like Frye and Darko, but they refuse to take responsibility for it and blame the players. Why are so many fans quick to blame the players they come to watch and will defend the billionaire owners that make wayyy more than them?

SwatLakeCityParticipantBecause its the players that accept those heavy contracts. If they really cared about the game instead of the money then they would take the lesser money. (but sadly that will never happen) It’s partly the owners fault for offering them the contract, but another part of the blame falls on the players too.

llperezdwilljazz, come on man. The players should care more about the game and accept less money? Lets be real, everyone wants as much as they can get. The owners, gms, coaches, players. If someone is willing to pay them 100 mill or whatever, then why should they turn it down, thats just dumb. You come to my house and say heres 10 million dollars, but if you really cared about the game you would accept 5 million, im gonna laugh in your face and take the 10 million every single time.
As for the issue. The players will have to take less but it probably wont be nearly as much less as the owners are hoping for. I think the league contraction stuff is just stern playing media games to help their side of the issue for this coming summer. I dont think anyone wants a hard cap. Owners might pretend they want it, but lets see how they feel when they cant make any moves, resign their own free agents, have to trade their lottery picks cause they cant afford them, dont have a mid level excpetion to work with. A hard cap would backfire fast.

SwatLakeCityParticipantI know what you mean and I agree. No player would take less if offered more. But its still both the owners and the players faults.

Im Your FatherParticipantExplain what the players ought to do then? Should they say "Yes you offered me 15 million a year, but you know what, I think i’ll just settle for 5 million?"

RUDEBOY_ParticipantI think 1 of the best rules they installed was puttiing in a rookie pay scale this cuts down on the number of late signings like they have in football….Back in the day guys were getting 100 million dollar deals…Orlando got the number 1 overall picks in back to back years..Couldnt afford to sign Webber becuz they had drafted Shaq the previous year…

llperezi think the league needs to implement some kinda rule where they have the option to buy out contracts. Say if at any point they dont like how a player is playing, they can pay him half the rest of his total contract and he becomes a free agent. Injuries are an exception and the owners cant do this if its due to injury. The players still get a boatload of money for not even playing and become free agents so they can sign another contract with another team and make even more money still. And the owners are protected from terrible overpaid contracts that are holding them back and costing them many years of millions.

HitsterParticipantHow many owners who were chasing top free agents this summer have been moaning about the costs now, as owners they have to decide what they will pay and stick to it, some teams do generate more money and thus can pay greater salaries or have owners like Mark Cuban, Jerry Buss, James Dolan, Paul Allen etc. Others like Michael Jordan said he would not pay luxury tax as he knows his team cannot afford it and thus made moves so this would not happen.
NBA players have 4 years on a rookie deal and then their 2nd contract is limited to that compared to players on their 3rd contract and all salaries are based on a formula so you end up earning the most money at the end of your career. Kobe on $30 million as a 35 year old worries me more than a 27 year old on the same money.
My favoured option would be to have luxury tax levels that go to $2 per $ over cap possibly beyond $80 million dollars and then $3 per $ over $90 million dollars so you don’t have Knicks $130 million plus salary levels again unless the owner will pay stupid money to do so. Also no 2nd round draftees can have a contract higher than the 30th pick player.
