GlenTaylorSucksParticipantMinnesota is set to draft No. 9, with some buzz they are interested in UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammed.
But it appears Flip Saunders is the one guys who wants to move up in this draft.
To that end comes this tweet from Pioneer Press columnist Charlie Walters: “Looks like TWolves will try to deal Derrick Williams and No. 9 pick to move up in NBA draft.”
Williams was the No. 2 pick overall just two years ago. In an injury ravaged year for the Timberwolves he averaged nearly 25 minutes a game with 12 points and 5.5 rebounds a contest. He was pretty average, shooting just 43 percent overall and 33 percent from three, with a PER of 14.5. With Minnesota looking for offense due to injuries that slowed Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio, Williams had an opportunity and didn’t overwhelm. He’s nice. Not thrilling, but nice.
There are teams above the Timberwolves looking to move down, but how high up can he really get with this package? More likely, he’s testing the waters with what he can draw with this deal more than he is committed to it. Would this be enough of an offer to move up to No. 4 or 5 where maybe he could get Victor Oladipo?
Just something to watch. There are plenty of teams willing to trade picks this year, starting with the Cavaliers on top and moving down.

I think D-Will and their pick is a good start for the framework of a deal. But what concerns me is, is ‘Dipo for real an outside threat? I would feel better about a deal like this if the Wolves threw in Ridnour or Barea, and got back another SG/SF who can shoot a 3 in return.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThe Cavs need to think about it. Derrick Williams as another scoring option as a 4/3. Then at 9 they can get some help at center with Cody Zeller or Alex Len if they are still there or Kelly Olynyk or Steven Adams.
Then at 19 they can get a wing player like Hardaway, Jr, Allen Crabbe, or Reggie Bullock. Or that Greek guy Giannis.

rubiofubioParticipantDerrick Williams would be a top 3 pick for sure if he was in this draft, he also has a higher ceiling than most of the players in this draft.

kazamParticipantThere must be something that T’Wolves organization doesnt like about Williams. I agee with the other posters on here saying he has a high ceiling but if that was the case wouldn’t Flip be interested in seeing that through? Maybe its a work ethic, attitude or teammate issue pushing D-Will out of Minny

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantAdelman doesn’t like him. In his eyes, he’s the “bad” tweener who’s not quick enough to be a SF, and not aggressive enough on the boards/inside to be a PF. He also has very little team defensive IQ (I don’t think he even knows what a rotation is, lol). He settles a lot for jump shots. But you can tell that he’s most comfortable at PF, and when his shot selection gets better, he’ll be a force.

Mad MaxParticipantThat, and they have Kevin Love, who plays the same position, and the two can’t play at the sametime, making D-Will moveable. Also, McLemore at #1 would be more valuable for Minnesota than D-Will who will be a back-up for Minnesota as long as Love is there.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantI wouldn’t trade him just for ‘Dipo. I want the Wolves to take this opportunity to shed one of their PG’s, ’cause let’s be real. Neither Ridnour nor Barea are good for the Wolves. Shved can play time at the 1 if they need him. I would like it if they can take this opportunity to cut bait with one of them- Ridnour would probably be a more attractive asset just because his contract expires. My ideal deal would look like this:
Charlotte gets:
Derrick Williams
#9 pick (maybe the 26 as well)
Luke Ridnour (could be Barea also)Wolves get:
#4
Gerald Henderson (S&T)That way, the soon to be Hornets get another piece worth keeping and is an immediate upgrade over every other PF on the roster, and the chance to get Len/Adams/Zeller/Gobert/whatever big they want. The Wolves get ‘Dipo or McLemore (if he falls) and Henderson as wing players, and would unload a bit of their glut at PG/PF.

llperezDon’t really see too much sense in a sign and trade for Henderson since he’s a free agent who won’t get much money. If the wolves want him, they could just sign him. And even if ridniur is deemed expendable, basically you are giving up Dwill and #9 for #4. I think that’s too much and the level of quality from 4 to 9 in this draft is minimal as is. I would want to be in the top 2 if I’m minny and get either Noel who could compliment love or Ben who is the best off the ball shooter to play alongside Rubio.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThis site’s mock draft has Alex Len going 9 to Minnesota. If Cleveland can come out of this draft with Derrick Williams AND Alex Len they have to do it!
They would still have the 19th pick (to get small forward depth) and two picks in the second round to go after shooters or depth at point guard (Peyton Siva).
This draft could really set up the Cavs.

WarblingSpamalopeParticipantDerrick Williams looks like he listened too much to Beasley like he was his hero. He’s mastered the art of inefficient volume scoring and trotting up the court unless Rubio threw him a lob he had to bust it to get. It’s the age old question. Is it just his youth? Or is this his mentality?

The8thDeadlySinParticipantI think he may need a change of scenery or his role.. If you remember, in college he worked pretty hard.. He was never pegged as lazy or inefficient. I think he knows he is stuck in his current spot for the Wolves and it has frustrated him.

qDizzle32ParticipantIf D-Will would have stayed all 4 years at UA, he would definitely be a high pick in this draft and he just didn’t really fit in Minnesota. Still believe he can be a great player down the road and remember that he is only 22 and has a great amount of talent.
0- Posted on: Mon, 06/03/2013 - 8:55am #789342
GlenTaylorSucksParticipantOne of my big fears is that he busts out as soon as he has a coach who willingly develops him and believes in him, and when he has an opportunity to be what he should be- an undersized PF; and that we don’t get enough in return for him if he does. But then again, that would be classic Wolves, lol

JoeJoParticipantHeck, if everyone who was eligible stayed in college until now, Wall, Cousins, Favors, Tobias Harris, Tristan Thompson, Brandon Knight and Iman Shumpert would be available too. I’m sure they would kill this draft class too.
Unless Williams would have a better NBA career after staying two more years at Arizona, it’s irrelevant to revise history and put him back in college against inferior competition. You can do that with nearly everyone. It’s possible the only thing that changes about Williams coming out two years later is that he’s underwhelming two years later.

aztwulfParticipantD Will and the 9 is poor value for the wolves even if it is for the first pick in the draft. I agree that D Will is miscast in Minny, as D Will looks like he needs to be a stretch 4 to maximize his abilities. Love and D Will pretty much play the same game, only Love is quite a bit better at it. Love isn’t big enough to play extended minutes at the 5 and D Will isn’t quick enough to play effectively at the 3.
So, it is better for D Will if he gets moved. I just don’t like a D Will plus 9 for a high pick unless it brings other players/picks back to the wolves.
D Will, straight up, for one of the first four picks probably is pretty fair value.

hooverballParticipantThey should be looking at CHA’s #4 overal and Ben Gordon for Ridnour, Williams, Stiesma and #9 overal.
Bobcats get a backup PG that can shoot, back up center that can defend and potentially a starting PF by moving down 5 spots.
Wolves get a SG that can shoot on an expiring contract and move up in the draft.

aztwulfParticipantWalters (St. Paul Pioneer Press columnist) is famous for making things up and making it sound like privileged information. One of his most frequently used introductions is “a little birdie says”..
I wouldn’t believe one thing that comes out of Walter’s mouth, or keyboard, UNLESS you absolutely, 100 percent, know it to be true. He tries to act like he has inside information, but he is simply too lazy to go out and dig stuff up, so he throws crap against the wall in hopes that something sticks.
The Minnesota readers on here will agree with me.

NorthernLights666ParticipantLOL, this guy is the worst, aztwulf is absolutely right saying he throws things against the wall to see what sticks, that’s Walters in a nutshell. D-Will isn’t getting moved for a Draft pick, it will be for a vet, likely a starting SG. Also, the Wolves, according to team sources on Canis Hoopus, will not be selecting Shabazz, he’s been red flagged and moved off their Draft list. There has been talk here in the TC that Flip wants Oladipo, but not sure what kind of move can be made to get him, if they really did want him, something like this would probably suffice:
Phoenix:
Derrick Williams
9th PickMinnesota:
Jared Dudley

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantDudley is an extremely underrated player, and he and Oladipo would be a great 2/3 combo. Do that, draft a backup big or a wing with the 26, resign Bud and Pek (at a reasonable price), keep AK around, trade away Ridnour or Barea (or both) for more depth in the wings, and I’d say that’s a damn good offseason.

SnowtaParticipantMcLemore would be perfect for the Wolves. It really would be the ideal situation for McLemore and I think he would really maximize his potential playing in Minnesota. As inefficient as he was, 12 and 5.5 isn’t bad for a second year player playing less than 25 mins/game. I think if they do move D-Will for a pick they can get McLemore it will end up being a trade that works out well for both sides. I’m one of the rare Wolves fans who likes D-Will and thinks he will be a legit stretch 4 in the league. With that being said, the Wolves already got the best stretch 4 in the NBA and I don’t see Love and D-Will ever being able to both reach their full potential on the same team. I’d like to see the Wolves move him to move up, but they gotta find the right deal.
