Lotto StudParticipantWhen Mike Conley was coming out of HS he was highly touted as a PG in his class, then shortly after he enrolled at Ohio State for 1 season with his HS teammate Greg Oden. In his lone season at Ohio State he averaged 11.3 PPG & 6.1 AST. During the ’07 draft year Conley was rated the #1 PG in the class which wasn’t doubtful by anyone at the time. Memphis picked him #4 Overall which was high now that we see how he turned out. Although the draft class for that year was not strong in the PG position. Thus far throughout his 3-4 years with the Grizzlies, he has averaged a little over 10 PPG & 5 AST for his career. If you look at his stats you would say he has played well, but at one point in time he had lost his starting position & had been placed on the block for the longest. The franchise was not too impressed with his play, because they even sent Mayo to the summer league to learn the PG position to eventually replace Conley. After the experiment with Mayo over the summer, management took it upon themselves to offer Conley a 5-year $45 million extension, which everyone other than myself thought was ridiculous.
Since the contract extension Conley has been playing fairly well, but I would like to know is he "Fools Gold" for not being the elite player everyone thought he would be coming out of Ohio State?
Was it his supporting cast on the Ohio State team that boosted his stock that high?

RUDEBOY_ParticipantConley is playing well..But he still lacks the court vision and savvy..To be among the elite point guards in the league….Memphis signing him to that contract puzzles me..Rudy is their most talented player..But Zack is their most important player..With ZBo they’re within reach of a playoff spot..Without him they’re within reach of getting the top pick in the draft…

Meditated StatesParticipantI agree he does not have the playmaking ability and vision needed to be a starting PG on a good team. He is a back up PG on a good team at best. He would excel in a Kyle Lowry role. 4th pick in the draft was way too early and he benifited from playing with Oden in HS and College.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantThats funny becuz Lowry was out playing him in Memphis….

NJHooper95ParticipantConley came out in a very, very, weak draft, especially for point guards. So I can understand him being taken so high. Yet, he has always been overrated. He has rode Greg Oden’s coat-tail all the way to the NBA. Memphis was foolish for drafting him because Kyle Lowry had shown that he was a solid pg and is doing well for Houston now.

Quincey HodgesDidn’t he come out after one year and is Kyle a very good pg( Houston is willing to trade brooks)
Isn’t memphis a good team?..anyteam that makes the playoffs is a good team so if they make the playoffs with him as there point guard would’t that mean he can be a starting PG on a good team?
He is still growing as a player and is doing pretty well this year. Does anyone recall what steve nash and Chauncy Billups was doing in there fourth year?..Chauncy at the same age and Nash about 2 years older
He’s putting up 13 and 7 and has gotten better every year. The players he has on his team are the ype you dont rack up alot of assist with. Gay isnt a catch and shoot neither is Zach. Both get the ball and put it on the floor to score for the most part
Kyle Lowery is good but Given the same amount of time he doesn’t do anything better than Conley

IndianaBasketballParticipantI don’t know why people criticize Conley so much. He’s shown more improvement during his time in Memphis than OJ Mayo has.
Conley has improved every season. He improved his jumpshot… Got stronger. Started playing with more confidence. He’s a decent defender. I think he’s played well and made plays down the stretch of games. And it’s not like he’s done improving. People expect him to average a lot of assists, but like it was said above, he’s not exactly playing with a bunch of catch and shoot guys. Rudy Gay is a ball stopper and Zach Randolph is too.

NJHooper95ParticipantPeople are down on Conley because of the hype he received. He got superstar publicity in Hs and College but he does not has superstar ability. Furthermore he was a top 5 pick, secondly consider the top pgs in the league is conley in the top 12? Nash, Paul, D Will, Rose, Rondo, Wall, Curry, Jennings, Westbook, Parker, Harris, Billups, Felton, Brooks.! The Answer is No. I sure I could think of some more. He is not trash, but he is far from great.

Meditated StatesParticipantHe is not a starter is the point.

immaletufinishbutParticipanthe is just a solid pg, its not like he received a ridiculous contract, it was just enough. I think he is playing well and he does improve every season.

BKKnicksfanParticipantPeople…..
Conley was not considered a lotto pick until the tourney. He got boasted in the tourney in a WEAK pg class.

Quincey HodgesConley isn’t a superstar but he is a starter on a good team. Memphis is good and if im not mistaken they are the 8th seed if the playoffs started today. Thats a starter on a good team

Quincey HodgesExactly, a solid PG. Do ya’ll think Darren Collins,DJ augustine,Andre Miller are back ups?

HitsterParticipantConley has improved year on year and if he had had a big breakout season this year, hisa FA value could have gone up so it did make sense Memphis making him an offer but after virtually maxing Rudy Gay out, they will have to look at re-signing Z-Bo and Marc Gasol this summer. Marc Gasol is surely worth more than what Conley got and some team will surely make him a big offer and Z-Bo would want a contract surely at around $12million a year given his improved reputation since he went to Memphis and his proven scoring ability.
