Tedy BukasaParticipantEver since Damian Lillard shocked the world after being drafted, there seems to always be a marquee hidden gem in every draft since at the guard position. CJ McCollum, and Elfrid Payton were the hyped mid-major guards in the following drafts. McCollum hasn`t impressed yet (broke his foot before the season which affected how he eased into the rotation), and Payton has looked impressive throughout the course of his first Summer League (doesn`t mean much).
Going into the next NCAA season, who do you guys think could be mid-major turned NBA stud at the guard position?
I keep hearing about a Kenneth Smith from Lousiana Tech, but there is not much out on him.

Lotto StudParticipantI really don’t follow Mid-Major ball unless someone has crazy buzz, but I hope the run continues each year for a PG to be selected. This is great for their level of competition, to make guys want to go harder and achieve their goals of playing professional. C.J. McCollum heavily peaked my interest after the game against Duke.

Tedy BukasaParticipantYou’re right it’s been a tremendously eye-opening run for many small school NBA hopefuls.
I watched that Duke game, but I didn’t realize just how much McCollum was cookin’, until it was all over TV afterwards — and on cue, he was cooking again today.

rickyfutureagentParticipantI mean, the whole "mid-major PG" thing started with Steph Curry.

JoeWolf1Fred Van Vleet is an NBA player, but I don’t foresee him being a future star or lottery guy.
Still he’s extremely smart, and hard working, and at only 20 years old he sported an awesome 3.87 assist/TO ratio. At 6′ 197 with a 6’1.5” wingspan he doesn’t have great size, but he’s quick, and strong, and a tenacious defender, who’d only show weakness contending shots against taller guards.
He also sported a 41.1% clip from 3 point range as a sophomore. A rough shooting night against UK didn’t do wonders for his stock, and raised some questions about his ability to get his shot off against taller players, but he’s got a terriffic handle, and with another year with his work ethic…I’m optimistic he can improve his 1 on 1 offensive game. Still even against UK he still ran the team at a high level dishing out 6 assists to only 1 turnover, and his defensive disruption was still on par with his season average.
Fred, plays similarly to Tyler Ennis only without the size, but he is a humble hard working kid so I do expect him to make big leaps this season. If he can do that, I feel he can boost his stock into the 20’s in 2015, and if he plateau’s I still think he can be a 2nd round pick after his senior year.
