Over the last year or so you would’ve heard a lot of hype to do with players coming into the league this season.  Guys like Wiggins and Parker were touted as future Hall of Famers before stepping on an NBA, or even college, court.  This can certainly be those player’s future if they maximise their potenial and become league stars, but these expectations are not necessarily realistic.

The general idea of this thread is to compare a player’s best case scenairo (ie: if they manage to achieve their maximum potenial) against what they can reasonably be expected to acomplish in their time in the league (ie: their realistic potenial).

    Ex:
Player – Max. Potential – Realistic Potential
Andrew Wiggins – Develops quicker than expected, wins ROY, goes onto start in multiple all star games, is an MVP candiate during his prime and is a first ballot HOF. – Underwhelming start, relies on his athleticism for a few seasons before developing a consistant offensive game, is successful on teams where he isn’t the first option on offence, remembered for his excitment factor over actual production.

Aaron Gordon – Develops a nice midrange game, a common name on all-defensive teams, leads the lead in shot blocking at some point in his career, makes some all star games on merit of his athleticism. – Becomes a streaky offensive player but fails to have consistency over a full season, an all-defensive team guy during his prime, later in his career becomes a key bench player for a contender.

Answers don’t really have to wordy, but should get the point across.  Also, for this particular topic I’d discourage direct player comparisons as they rarely reflect a player in their entirity.

     Max.

Leads league in scoring within first 3 seasons. All star in year one, gets bucks to playoffs and wins a playoff series before leaving for Max Dollars in big market (if that’s not Max potential i don’t know what is) , Multiple MVP’s (good luck they robbed Kobe 4 times), Multiple NBA Champion.

    Realistic

Leads league in scoring whenever KD begins to lose a step (barring an injury, around 30-32), Multiple all stars starting year 3, MVP, NBA Champion.
