So I have heard way too many rumors of Melo possibly joining the Heat and taking the salary cut to play there. For one year I think that’d be fun to see but over an extended period of time it’d just make things boring. Then there are rumors of Love/Rondo, the Rockets getting  3rd max player, etc. I can’t blame players for joining up because it’s the best way to get back at the current CBA. No other sport has maximum salary restrictions for a player. I think a possible solution to this would be either eliminating the max salaries for players or raising it a substantial amount.

Currently in your first 6 years you can earn 25% of your teams salary, years 7-9 it becomes 30% and anything after that it would be 35%. What if, however, those numbers were changed to 35%, 40%, 45%? Or 50% every year? Or unlimited? First, starting at 35% would rule out an possibility of a Big 3, even a younger version. Second, who in the prime of their career would turn down all that extra money?

Say the cap is $55 million. You are just hitting the prime of your career and are a free agent after your 7th season (same year LeBron was at when he left). You can either join up with some superstar buddies somewhere or stay in town. Both teams have $10 million on the books and five players signed. To sign with your buddies (2 million given to four minimum guys to fill out the roster) the most you can make is 14.3 million without dipping into the luxury (which owners tend to avoid now). If you stay home at 40% you are making 22 million and now have 23 million in cap to fill out your roster. At 50% you can make 27.5 million and still have 17.5 million to fill the roster. Who in their right mind would turn down nearly double the money to play elsewhere?

I understand the mindset of a superteam, I absolutely do. But I want to watch so I can see stars face eachother. I want to see LeBron vs. Durant, not LeBron/Melo/Wade/Bosh vs. Durant/Westbrook/Ibaka. If you want to make the league finally have a little parity, the max salaries of players must be changed to the point that either they are eliminated or that you would be losing out on so much money to join a superteam that you commend that person for putting winning above everything.

The max salary for all sports should be lowered, not just the NBA. Barkley said it right before, talking about how the MLB is basically 5 or soteams with a chance to win it all and the rest suck because of unlimited cap room, most of the time. I love seeing big-name players go head-to-head, I’d hate to see a team of superstars play against a D-League team, it often ends in a blowout. The joy of watching the playoffs is because you see the best the league has to offer, and the NBA is so damn top-heavy. The NFL is great in the fact that the teams are largely competitive and small-market teams have just as much a chance to win as the big market teams.

I love the NBA and the NFL, but I find it outrageous that the players are paid more to play a game than war vets, doctors, cops, teachers, people that actually contribute to society. Hate on that all you want, but that’s my opinion.

You’re entitled to your opinion but it’s pretty unrealistic in our society especially when as a fan of the sport you contribute to the economy that allows them to make as much money as they do. They get paid what the market dictates, and it’s a lot easier for the average person to do those other jobs you mention than to be a pro athlete.

Keep in mind that it’s only the very best athletes in the world getting paid millions. Many of very best teachers and doctors in the world are also millionaires

The only way it would make sense to lower salaries in the 4 big sports in the US is if owners reduce ticket and merchandise prices and as long as people (like us) are willing to pay them that won’t happen

Really? Do the A’s or Giants have huge salary numbers? Because they are the two best teams in baseball. The Giants have won 2 World Series recently, the Rays have continuously contended, and plenty of other small market teams have made runs.

There is no bigger fallacy than that the Yankees, Dodgers, and acouple other teams are the only one who can contend.

And if you are mad about doctors, cops, and teachers not making as much money as athletes, then you don’t understand simple economics. If we start seeing 20 thousand + people pay to watch doctors, cops, and teachers perform on a daily basis, then their salaries would go up too.

The Giants payroll is 147 million dollars putting them 6th in the league. When is the last time the Rays or A’s won a World Series? They haven’t in the last 2 decades. Yes those low end payroll teams can make the playoffs consistently, but everything has to peak for them at the right time to actually win a championship. Making the playoffs really isn’t contending. The Cardinals are the closest to backing your point, but even without Pujols their team salaries total 107 mil.

I mentioned this in another thread. The salary from free agents still count against the cap until they sign somewhere. So even if everyone at the Heat has expiring contracts, they don’t have the cap space to sign Melo unless he goes there for the MLE. I think the rumor is a bit ridiculous… zero percent it happens specially if the Spurs win this championship.

There would be a few players that wouldn’t take the max money because if there was still a salary cap, but no limit on what a player could make it would absolutely cripple teams.  There would be a greedy group that went first taking about 40 or 45 mil, then players after that would realize that it just wouldn’t result in success.  Parity maybe?  But it only takes 2 or 3 players who realize they don’t need that much money to mess up the whole system.  While every other team was paying a "max" guy 45 mil, those guys could take the standard 15 mil and dominate.

We know one person for sure who would take as much as they would give him no matter how much it cripples the team…. Kobe.

A team has to relinquish the right to resign a player who is an FA for their previous salary not to count in contract calculations when they are chasing another FA I think. So the team either looks to resign the first player for less or gives up any chance to resign them under Bird rights as I read the CBA.

This would stop a team lets say the Lakers or Heat letting their stars hit FA, signing a couple of stars with cap space and then resigning the first guys. Pau Gasol is effectively still on the Lakers cap at $19 odd million until he signs elsewhere, they renounce his Bird rights or they resign him for less let’s say $10 million a year as an example.

imo the NFL is great because there are a few things that other leagues do not have-

    1. Revenue sharing

    2. Hard cap

    3. non guaranteed contracts.

Just put a hard cap in place and a lot of the super team problems go away.

revenues being as high as they are either the owners or the athletes are going to get the money and I personally prefer the athletes get as much of the pie as they can. Is it crazy these guys make 5,10,15,20 million a year ? Absolutely, but it is what it is, good for them.

Barkley’s comments are so wrong considering the NBA is the most predictable of all four major American pro sports. The NBA is the league where 5-6 teams have a true shot to win before the season even starts and it has been that way forever. The NBA is a dynasty driven league and something needs to be done to fix the competitive balance because even with a salary cap, it is less competitive than the MLB.
