The Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics have agreed upon a trade involving Rajon Rondo.

The Mavericks would send Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson, one future first round pick and a future second round pick to the Celtics for Rondo and Dwight Powell.

“The deal is on course to happen tonight,” said one source.

Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Houston Rockets have effectively dropped out of talks, with the Celtics focused on wrapping a deal with the Mavericks.

It doesn’t seem like the Celtics are getting much in return. But I guess it beats letting him walk for nothing. I wonder if a Jeff Green trade will be next.

And the west just got a little tougher… the mavs didn’t give up much at all either.

I consider Brandan Wright a pretty decent steal, while many choose to gravitate in a mass awe state of being for Boston to not receive greater assets in return. Wright is coming along in the later part of his career. Being a high-motor rim protector, his purpose serves wonders with the Celtics moving forward.

but isn’t he also in the last year of his contract?

Yes, as well as Brandon Bass. A smaht move by Ainge would be to retain Wright for cheap. Wright doesn’t command the max for what his track record speaks of him overall as a sleeper.

Wright becomes senior big man in Boston immediately which is good for him. I’ve commented in depth on this trade on another topic on this forum.

I would have thought Rondo might have favoured Houston given Harden is younger than Ellis and D12 is superior to Tyson Chandler. But we could argue Dallas has more depth and Rondo creating for their offence would be a very attractive option.

Man this trade gets me really excited!

My first thought was the Mavs really didn’t have to give up a lot in 3 rotation players but in reality Wright and Crowder are valuable members of the 2nd unit. If I’m not mistaken Wright is on his way to post record setting stats for the 4th year in a row efficiency wise but on the other hand the Mavs didn’t really have to involve one of their core guys to make this happen.

Woj is reporting that the 2015 Mavs pick involved is heavily protected: Protected 1-3 and 15-30 in 2015; 2016-2020 protected to No. 7.

For sure the Mavs bench is hurt heavily especially the frontcourt but Rondo is worth it and now the Mavs on Paper are really really appealing. A former MVP, A former DPOY, former COY, Parsons, Ellis who is peaking right now and now a walking tripple double, 4 time All Star and 4 time All Defensive Team member in Rondo who is still only 28 years old.

On the other hand the Celtics at least got something in return even if Wright is a FA after this year, Nelson has a 3.25 mio player option for next year and Crowder has a qualifying offer for 1.18 mio.

This basically means that none of the player involved going to the Celtics might be on this Celtics roster next year and considering the protected pick the Celtics didn’t get much in return in reality.

Oh and the West got even tougher! As of right now, the Mavs sit at 6th place and the whole Conference is still completely open. The battle for the last 2 spots could go on for a while:

Really enjoyed Zach’s take on the trade this morning at Grantland.

Best line "We know Rondo has an extra gear when he gives a crap."

Ainge may not be done, as the playoff picture gets clearer he could flip a number of players besides Jeff Green. I think Brandon Wright could get you a late first somewhere in the 24 to 30 range. Imagine if Serge,Varejao, Deandre Jordan, Bogut, Gortat, Amir Johnson almost any starting big for playoff teams get hurt. Brandon Wright could fit almost any system. Jameer Nelson or Crowder could get you a late second round pick in Febuary for a budding playoff team. The Clippers could use Nelson now and Doc loves guys that were formidable when his Boston team was good.

Now the C’s can dump either some of their forwards and bigs after trying out Wright and Crowder or dump them if they don’t fit Stevens plan.

I think Crowder is a upgrade over James Jones/Marion (Cavs) or Andre Roberson. I know I would give up the 20th pick in the draft for Brandon Wright if I was the Cavs. He is a rim protector from the weak side and hyper efficient on offense.

I think the Celtics should consider keeping Crowder. He is similar to what Bass brings to the table and kind of a poor mans version of Draymond Greene. I’m not sure I would trade him for a 2nd rounder.

Wright should draw interest from contending teams but his expiring contract might scare some teams who look for a long term solution but on the other side an expiring contract is always intriguing to some teams who need to shed salary.

Crowder looks out of shape…where is he on the depth chart? Nelson…shrug, throw in on Bass? Im not excited about worthless assets, or watching a “good effort” while Ainge decides on a model for teams build. Fat Slow Centers and Power Forwards are an unlikely foundation to a competitive team. Weak draft wont help the Celtics assets….as you said Ainge isnt done

Mavs were my favorite to win in the beginning of the season… And now… it’s a guarantee IF THEY STAY HEALTHY THEY WILL WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP. They got an elite coach. A superstar PG(if you are argue against that, go watch some pre-2012 playoff basketball) two all-star players, two borderline all-star players. Devin Harris is one of the better 6th men in the league. Got a junkyard dog in Aminu. This team is a lot like the team that won the 2011 championship… Rondo is THE REMIX BABYYYY of JKidd, and JKidd was way past his prime in 2011 too.

This is exciting! Mavs and Cavs in 5!

Jeff Green would have good trade value but his player option for next season could be a factor as he may be after a better pay day. Jeff seems to be getting back to his best form over last season and so far this year, there are guys who are putting up far less production and being paid much more.

He has played virtually every game since his missed season and so his durability cannot really be questioned. Also he was KG’s original running mate at OKC so has proved he can be a very good 2nd or 3rd fiddle on a contending team.

As The Artist points out correctly above Brandan Wright can easily be flipped for a late first rounder towards deadline day if a contender wants an extra big. For a team looking for a big play off run giving up a late first rounder to achieve this is a perfect course of action. Okay they might miss out on a decent prospect but that salary could then be used to sign a veteran FA next summer.

I’m sure Ainge would have liked to have dumped Crash Wallace in the trade but tht wasn’t to be, the Celtics can absorb his salary easily so that is no issue.

Boston have aprox 5 first rounders due via trades over the next 4/5 years so Danny Ainge will have a lot of draft firepower to rebuild around their young core going forward.
