I see Malik Newan has applied for the Draft.  Like Simmons he did not choose to go to a traditional power. Unlike Simmons, he sucked this year.

I know you can be evaluated and go back to school now, but I don’t know that he is going to be an NBA player, let alone a one and done.

    Your thoughts?

He won’t get drafted, keep his name in, and then never be heard from again

NBA is all about youth and potential, Newman has both. He had a bad season trying to play point and dealing with injuries. However, I think someone will take chance on him, maybe a early or mid second round pick. I don’t think he will be a star, but I think he can play in the NBA.

I really think an injury was the problem. He played outstanding to start and fell off a cliff statistically, never recovering. I can only assume an injury does that. Some team will draft him and he’ll be a total steal… assuming he’s healthy at tryouts.

I compare him and Zeke Whitehead.. Same height kinda and both are Monta Ellis type players. I say now that Whitehead has the better chance to succeed because he is tough and is stronger. Malik needs to go back to school and learn how to play the point, like Marcus Smart did. Get his ball handling better and lead his team. He was overrated.

There’s no doubt in Newman’s mind that he wanted to be a professional basketball player for a living, so I think it’s better he just leaves now than pretend to be putting his academics first. This year, at least, he has a shot to be drafted. I don’t know if he’ll stick in the NBA but he will definitely be a professional ball player. Whether that’s in the NBA, D-League, or overseas is up to him and whether he can become a more complete player. Odds are already against him as an undersized two guard, but I won’t count him out yet

Newman reminds me a lot of Josh Selby, perhaps with a slightly better long range shot. A lot of growth can happen over the summer and Ben Howland has a good track record with player development, he really needs to stay in school.

Wow.  He was the #1 ranked high school player at one point.  If you had told me a year ago he would be a mid second round pick I would not have believed it.  The college game really exposed his weaknesses which are lack of PG skills, surprising lack of basketball IQ, and average shooting.  His athleticism could not get him to the hole like it did in high school.

I think he would have been better off at a Kentucky, where everyone thought he was going.  He would have still had the same kind of problems but could have hidden his weaknesses a lot better.  He could have played behind Ulis and Murray, and been a 3rd guard at times and he would not have been mercilessly exposed like he was at Miss State.  It’s hard to see how he is NBA quality when he was pulled from the starting lineup mid-way through the season.  His teammate, who was second banana on his high school team, Quinndary Weatherspoon was the stud freshman on the team and really had the kind of season that Newman was preordained to have.  I like the Selby comp.

Late second rounder at best if he keeps his name in. More than likely undrafted. He will definitely be spending a considerable amount of time in the d-league either way.

He reminds me a lot of Doron Lamb although he does have another gear and kind of confidence to him that good scorers have. Sort of like a Marcus Thornton as well.
