I saw this breakdown of the luxury tax savings for Golden State trading David Lee (15.5mil) to Boston for G Wallace (10.1 mil).

    • Before the trade: $102.5 million in salary + $48.3 million in tax = $150.8 million
    • After the trade: $97.1 million in salary + $30.3 million in tax = $127.4 million
    • If they stretch Wallace’s salary: $90.3 million in salary + $14 million in tax = $104.3 million.                                                                                                                      My favourite team Cleveland projects to pay larger tax numbers and it brings me to Anderson Varajao (9.7 mil) and Tristan Thompson projected near max deal (15 mil)for two players not in the starting 5 allegedly to appease Lebron. Those salaries are staggering enough, never mind the added tax. After hearing David West was interested in Cleveland for the veteran minimum, I wonder how GM Griffin can’t convince Lebron that his two bigs are not worth the 50 million plus in salaries and luxury tax that Thompson and Varajao are going to cost Cleveland.  Surely David West and another big who would play with Lebron for veteran minimum ( K Perkins) would hold the fort down. I’m sure they could still pick up assets for Thompson if his salary expectations were closer to market rates.

Their team will not change but when the cap goes up they will be ahead of the game.  Lebron is basically saying he is worth it.  He has earned this team and city enough money they should trip on anything he ask in that regard.
