I wanted to create this thread to see what people think of the New Mexico Lobos for this upcoming tourney.

I’ve watched them a couple times, and see why people are so high on them. They play great perimeter defense and Kirk is a matchup nightmare. However, none of their stars (Kirk, Snell, Williams and Bairstow) are seniors, and none of them are exceptional talents. For whatever reason that bothers me. Just about every serious contender has at least one starting senior, right? (except for Kentucky last year).

What do you guys think about the Lobos? Overrated? Anyone got them going to ATL? I have them beating Ohio State, but I’m not confident at all about it.

Correction: Jamal Fenton and Chad Adams often start for the Lobos, who are both seniors. However, they both produce less than 5 pts a game. So while they start, their roles are very limited.

    Still include thoughts please.

Fenton and Adams don’t start for New Mexico.

After San Diego State took a dump on Los Lobos, Coach Alford wisely took Fenton out of the starting lineup and replaced him with Bairstow, giving them a classic 2 in, 3 out look. Bairstow is a strong, fundamentally sound dude who bangs, has little, if any, vertical explosion but decent feet and lateral movement…he’s averaging 12.5 and 8 over his last 12 games, providing a 2nd legit post presence to go along with Captain Kirk.

Kendall Williams is a great playmaker and athlete with awesome size at the point and I love how he plays with a chip on his shoulder. Tony Snell may be the most underrated player in the country, a silent assassin, who brings size, shooting ability, and athleticism to the table.

I have New Mexico in the Final Four, no doubt about it!

Lastly, I don’t think the lack of seniors in the starting lineup matters, to be honest. They have a junior at the point, on the wing, and in the post. I love their distribution of talent. Only weaknesses are a lack of offensive efficiency and a lack of depth. I feel, though, that their size, athleticism on the perimeter, and 2 dudes who can bang will put them over the top, similar to Louisville last year, a team that really struggled in the offensive efficiency metrics, but dominated otherwise.

I think they’re the team to beat in that region. Couldn’t have been set up much better for them honestly.
I have them in my final 4.

        Not gonna happen.

New Mexico is a matchup nightmare for Ohio State. While Ohio State has zero post (Amir Williams: 4 PPG and 4 RPG and Evan Ravenel: 5 PPG and 4.5 RPG) . New Mexico has an excellent post (Ale Kirk: 12 PPG and 8 RPG and Cameron Bairstow: 12.5 PPG and 8 RPG over his 12 games).

While DeShaun Thomas is the lone ranger who Ohio State leans on for offense, Tony Snell has the size, athleticism, and defensive skills to keep him in check.

I would be utterly shocked if Ohio State beat New Mexico.

I also have them in the final four. I actually think K State is gonna smack Gonzaga in the mouth and make it to the Elite 8 against New Mexico. I like their ability to control pace with their big guards and a legit 7 footer. Scary thing is their top 6 scorers could all be returning.

The problem with their four best players is that they don’t consistently play well offensively at the same time. They do always have someone step up, though. They can have long offensive lapses, but if Snell is aggressive, they can make it to Atlanta. Gonzaga and OSU are both pretty good match-ups for them.
