JBrace19ParticipantI was thinking…LeBron was tremendous in Cleveland, and took them to the Finals, but after not winning a title as promised for the Cavs, and leaving in a horrible fashion…do you think they will still Retire LeBron’s #23 jersey?

NO EZ BUCKETSParticipantHe was the best player to ever play in cleveland. I think that is a pretty strong case for having your # retired. But… the people of Ohio(and lots of other people including me) still hate him for how he left the Cavs. It might be a while, but I think cleveland will eventually retire his #

aamir543ParticipantUm, I don’t think so. They hate him to the gut, and even if the team retires his jersey, I don’t think a majority of their fans would be cool with it.

NO EZ BUCKETSParticipantexactly i’m not saying that the fans would like it, but they will probably retire his #, even if it is in like 60 years

aamir543ParticipantWell, you are right to an extent, but as long as Dan Gilbert is alive, no way in hell is he going up in the rafters.

JBrace19ParticipantNo matter how much Cleveland hates him, they wouldn’t have a reason to hate him if he wasn’t as good as he was…yeah he left in a bad way, but i guarentee there would be haters in Ohio even if he did leave like a normal FA would…He is too good not to retire his number.

iguapops420ParticipantDan Gilbert will allow no legacy to be had for LBJ in Cleveland. He;ll NEVER see his number retired there.

TiosecoParticipantHow can they not retire the jersey of their franchise’s best player ever? everyone’s just still caught up with all the drama last offseason brought that’s why they don’t think they wouldn’t. THEY SHOULD. (I hate Lebron to the guts)

surveParticipantHistory is always kinder to great players than the present times will ever be. Its like you said, everyone is caught up emotionally still. Once this memory of his "Decision" becomes more faded and once Dan Gilbert is gone…they will. Even if Gilbert is around years from now I think he will eventually play the "bigger man" role and have it done.
I dont think Gilbert hates LBJ as much as people think. Its just like a father and son having a huge falling out and not speaking for years, only to reflect on what happened and eventually agree that "you know what, this is silly and has gone on long enough, let bygones be bygones".
You have to realize that heat of the moment and fresh emotions dont last forever….also, dont rule out LBJ returning to the Cavs late in his career. There have been times where the young villian became the beloved hero later in his career. I dont know how you guys feel about him now but a few years ago, Kobe was damn near the most hated man on the planet.

Andrew1984ParticipantI’ve lived in Cleveland my whole life. The city will eventually get over its hatred for LeBron James, but there is no chance it will ever retire his jersey. In 10-12 years, the city might not hate him anymore, but it definitely won’t want to publicly honor him. It’s just not going to happen. No chance.

HitsterParticipantI wonder if any other player asked for that number at Cleveland whether they would be allowed to wear it?
There would be a school of thought that it is kept back but if Dan Gilbert did want to get back at LeBron then giving it to some 2nd round draft pick could be funny. But I would be interested if say Kyrie Irving asked for it whether he would be given that number?
