What happen to LaQuinton Ross, how did he go from being the number one high school player two years ago to now he is like number 60. How does that happen did he get hurt or something? I remember OJ Mayo was the number player in his class for a long time until Rose, B-Easy, and Gordon on some sites passed him, but 1 to 60 in 2 years is kind of bad. Can someone shed some light please. Thanks

… but I think I heard he was already a tall freshman and most people hadn’t caught up to him, but now that people have cut up more people have shown what they can do. It’s not that he’s been ice cold and doing bad, its more other people doing good. I still think he’s a good prospect. I’m surprised he chose Ohio State though. It really sounded like Syracuse had him. At least we got Christmas and MCW.

Its called not being as good. If you remember Korie Lucious was a top 10 player in his class…. 3 years before he graduated high school. What happened was others developed and he didnt.

no it has nothing to do with ” not being as good” its called developing earlier then other players. its happened to just about every single player ranked number one two or three as freshmen in high school the same as players ranked top 3 as 5th graders. at the time he was the best but others just haven’t developed yet..perry jones was a bum as a freshman as well as a couple others (i bet anthony davis wasnt even ranked in the top 500). some kids as freshmen haven’t hit there growth spurt or hit there growth spurt and haven’t gotten accustomed to there body or they can run and jump but cant dribble or shoot or have the basketball IQ to do anything

    derrick caracter
    kris lang
    schea cotton
    renardo sydney

its very rare that a player ranked number one as a freshman finishes number one as a sr

Except for the Oden’s, Mayo’s, Jennings’s, Evans’s, Lebron’s, you know… top players. I refuse to believe a player hits their peak at 13-14, especially when you have prototypical wing size. He just hasn’t developed his skills much further, where players like MCWilliams, Jabarie Hinds, and Nick Johnson have continued to improve. A s I can recall Tony Wroten hasnt had a tremendous growth spurt. Or Rivers, or Kabongo, or McAdoo, or Blackshear. They’ve just gotten better, which means theyve worked harder. To fall from top 5 to out of the top 50 is worse than Cotton or Sydney or Lang or Caracter, they were still all 5 star, top 20, or in some cases top 10 players. Ross is nearly the same player he was a couple years ago. He’s a LOT like Isiah Armwood.

We always see, the players who get better faster are the player who work harder. Who out works Kobe, Wade or Lebron? At 6’7 with his freakish wingspan, theres no excuse why he isnt dominant.

oden wssdnt ranked as the top freshman cfaracter was…mayo wasnt ranked as the top sr by his sr year..jennings evans lebron..none of them were ranked as the top freshmen( jennings might have been)…and ross hasnt peaked.. hes gotten better but he was already so good as a freshman there wasnt anywhere else for him to go but down or stay at number one if other players didnt get better

one top of all that im not sure if you knwo or not but rankings arent just about if the guys ahead of you are better. there are players ranked top 15 wo arent better then a player ranked 70th. just because you are ranked higher then another player doesnt mean thats the end all or thats set in stone that you are better then another player

kobe wade and bron also werent ranked number one as freshmen…you fail to realize that some people dont put it all together UNTILL they are sr’s.. does that mean the player they replaaced at the top was overrated?..ummm no. there are players who start highschool playing jv because they havent put it all together then are all americans by the time they are seniors. there are growth spurts, or playing on a great hs team and having to wait youre turn

i can be 6’7 as a freshman killing it and ranked number one with a 25inch vert and not real fast and have a teammate whos 6’10 who cant dribble low basketball iq but has a 40 inch vertical. if we both work equally hard who you think has the best chance to be the better player by the time we are sr’s?..or a guy whos 6’1 and a point guard that grows to 6’9 and works as hard as me?

Dude, in a couple years, you should improve. Many players improved significantly more than Ross. To quote Draftexpress.

“Ross was a very highly touted player from an extremely young age, but there are some concerns that he’s not improving as quickly as some of his peers and that his mentality leaves something to be desired. He’s still far too young of a prospect to write off, and we’ll have to see what he looks like after another year of high school basketball next summer.

Its all still a great deal of potential without him truly showing that hes going to maximize it. He still has a good amount of potential, which is why ESPN still has him ranked 22nd. But lets be honest about THIS GUY! Not Cotton, not Caracter, not Armwood or McAdoo, not any other prospect past, present or future. Ross shows no defense, no intensity, and frankly underachieving for his ability. When your in the top spot, its yours to lose. He lost it. Case closed. This isnt a symbol of what his NBA career will be, but it is a slight indictator, that unless he steps it up, he’ll be passed by his teammates on OSU as well. you dont make it to the league by not working hard, unless your 6’10 245 and athletic, then you can get drafted.

Yes rankings are extremely subjective. I’m just explaining why he dropped. Because other players have improved more than he has and have outperformed him on the court.

As for Perry Jones, he’s way too hyped for me as there are plenty of players, like you said, that are better than him now, that have plenty of potential left themselves. (An player 6’10+ wing his wingspan that say its hard for him to play in the post against HS’ers is not a prospect I like.)

Everything else is more quibbling. Nice debate. *Bows graciously*

shows no defense or intensity?..exactly how many games have you watched him play?..ive watched a couple of his games in vegas the past 2 summers and he should pretty good intensity and defense. so i dont know who is telling you other wise or where you are reading it but they are lying to you.

You dont have to do much to get dropped in rankings(which once again isnt the end all or be all of how good a player is compared to his peers. Another thing ive noticed…many scouting services will say this or that kid “had a great game” when they had a o.k game at best…example

my nephews team played toney mitchells team out in vegas. my nephew guarded mitchell for most of the game and mitchell guarded him for the whole game… mitchell finished with 13pts(took 12 shoots and went to the line twice missing once) about 6 reb and 3 blks…my nephew finished with 22points 12 rebs and 3 blocks plus dunked on toney twice. yet when i read the write up it says toney looked great and dominated the game. showing that rankings arent always worth the paper they are printed on

i do agree that he hasnt worked as hard as he probably should have which would explain his drop but after seeing a couple players ranked ahead of him he is easily top10 and top 15 at worst

I agree he’s very talented, and really all this is a moot point because him being regulated to a third stringer early in his college career, or him flourishing as a freshman for a coach more than willing to hand the reigns over to a frosh are both real posibilities. And even though hes dropped in the rankings, we’ve seen players with less talent and notoriety come from even lower in the rankings to become lotto picks (See Hilton Armstong). So obviously nothing is set in stone for the kid.

So rico, did me and stan-q do an ok job answering your question?
