After the Celtics beat the Lakers yesterday, Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak said the team may need to shake up the roster. This made me wonder what moves they could make this season…

After looking at their roster:

Kobe = untouchable

Gasol, Odom, and Fisher are all very important for the Lakers and I don’t think there is a trade out there that would upgrade the team involving just one of these guys (due to age and contracts).

Artest – ideally they would trade him for a better wing player (Iggy, Granger) but he just doesn’t have the value due to his poor play, age, and contract (4 years)

Shannon Brown, Devin Ebanks, and Derrick Caracter are all young assets but aren’t valuable enough for a significant upgrade but could sweeten a potiental deal.

They don’t have any large expiring contracts but do have a $5.5mil trade exemption (Vujacic trade).

There best trade asset is ANDREW BYNUM…

They have been successful without Bynum. He is only 23 and has the size and potential that a team would desire to build a franchise around.

I know everyone is sick of the Carmelo talk but a deal of Bynum with a combination of Ebanks, Caracter, Brown, and/or a couple of first round picks would arguably be better than what the Nets were offering and sure better than anything the Knicks could put together.

Phil Jackson said the Inconsistancy on offense is what the team needs to improve the most. Carmelo is one of the top offensive players in the league. His presence would take pressure off Kobe. They could start Gasol and Odom in the post. This would hurt their size against a team like Boston but Carmelo would definitely upgrade the team overall. I think Carmelo would be willing to resign with the Lakers to stay with his buddy Kobe.

Realistically, I doubt the Lakers make any big moves with teams being cautious with all the unknowns entering this offseason and the new CBA but it is interesting to think about…

Any other trade ideas?
