BallinmvpParticipantApparently according to Marc Berman of the NY Post, the Lakers are not looking to sign Melo during the free agency period. Do you guys think it’s really accurate or a smokescreen? Do you guys think it’s a good thing or bad thing that the lakers don’t plan on signing Melo?

Chilbert arenasParticipantI wouldn’t want Melo either if I’m the Lakers, but at the same time I’m not entirely sure what their plan is. They resigned Kobe for the next 2 years but they’re in rebuilding mode not win now mode? Melo and Kobe would not compliment each other what so ever, and if Melo really wants to win the Lakers would be a bad option at this point and in reality he should try to stay in the East.

Magic JordanParticipantThis tells me they are on the right track then and not chasing knee jerk moves to appease Kobe.

ibe12ParticipantIf the Lakers are smart they should be in full rebuild mode. Kobe wouldn’t like that but the Lakers need way too much in order to be competitive again let alone be a championship team. Age, injuries, average role players and playing in the Western Conference is way too much for them to overcome.

MopgrassParticipantIf they want to get in full rebuild mode, they need to build through the draft. They lose next year’s pick to Phoenix unless they get a draft pick in the top 5. Not likely. I’d love it if they did: get a new coach and let Kobe play only 15 minutes a game.
I’d bet they sign a few free agents this year, a few next year, and brace for just missing the playoffs this year.

Memphis MadnessParticipantWell this does force the price down. Not sure if Jimmy Buss is that smart though…

thatdude44ParticipantIs it possible the lakers could sign and trade Melo to get other players that would actually compliment each other? IMO Rebuild mode should be in full effect, putting pieces in place now to be sucessful in the future.

DolanCareParticipantThe real question is, why would Melo go to the Lakers? NYK is the highest grossing NBA team right now… so you can’t go with the bigger market arguement. Moreover, the Lakers are in the pits. Not as bad as the Knicks situation, but hardly a significant upgrade for Melo.

r377ParticipantIf Melo-noma is serious about winning a championship he will have to take a big pay cut and sign for 10-15 mill rather than trying for the max 20+ mill.
No contender can afford to pay that to him and even if he did get that big contract from a low seed playoff team, Melo-noma will not push them into serious contender category.

UnbiasedObserverParticipantHaha! Melo-noma! That was a good one r377.
But in all seriousness Melo’s best fit is Chicago because they have all defense and no scoring. So that way Thibs can remove the "noma" from Melo. Not to mention hes also a superb coach

PHXSUNDREAMPICK13ParticipantI just wonder how the Knicks plan to improve to keep Melo. Hardly any trade assets and over the cap. Guess they can pay some more excess tax and get somebody in there. Who really is primed to take Melo on their team from a team concept and budget. If KG retires and D.Will is traded then maybe Brooklyn? Maybe Bulls after some moves

ExumInfernoParticipantIt’s the Lakers. It’s the Lakers with cap-space. It’s the Lakers with cap-space and a lottery pick, they will get someone very high in the superstar rankings of the NBA, they always do.
I go with smokescreen. Nash and the pick and some money go for K Love. N Young and R Kelly stay around. Anthony can get a lot of money from the Lakers. He can get more from the Knicks, but he might try Hollywood instead of Broadway.
