In order for this to end up working out the teams would have to make additional moves to their roster, but bare with me…

NYK send Carmelo to ATL for Horford, Schroder, and Splitter.

    NYK then has

1: Schroder, Cald (trade him with Lopez or Splitter for a 3 and D SF), Grant

    2. Afflalo

    3. Early, Lance Thomas

    4. Zinger, D. Williams

    5. Horford, Lopez/Splitter (trade one with Cald for 3 n D SF)

… They immensely improve team deffense and add potential for the future (A Zinger/Schroder combo could be deadly).

    ATL then has

    1. Teague, Mack

    2. Korver, Patterson, Hardaway Jr.

    3. Melo, Bazemore/Thabo (trade one for a defensive center (J. Noah?))

    4. Millsap, Scott

    5. Tavares

… People said last year despite all the talent the Hawks had at each position, they couldn’t win without a "superstar." They would still be studly at each position minus center, but they would have their "superstar" in Melo

Melo is not a superstar, he is a $27mill cancer whose body is breaking down. He lacks teamwork, leadership and defence.

The Knicks have him signed up till the end of the 18/19 season, I don’t think any teams would want to go anywhere near him….

After Kobe retires, Melo will officially be the worst contract in the NBA. $24.5mill for next near, $26mill for 17/18 and a player option of $28mill for the 18/19 season where he will be 35yo. $28 mill for a broken down 35yo, 41%fg, iso, ball hog who doesn’t play defence or pass the ball – no thanks…

They have a team full of players that would barely get playing time anywhere else outside of Philly, but they’re playing big minutes for the Knicks.   Melo gets doubled/tripled team damn near everytime he touches the ball.   Please don’t mention his contract because the Knicks WANTED him to stay there regardless of the "poor defense" and "terrible shot selection".   All of this was said when they originally got him from Denver, so now he has the worst contract in the league?  How?

The Knicks knew this will be a rebuilding project, they needed someone there to keep the fans at bay and to sell tickets/jerseys.  They needed a superstar and Melo (STILL A TOP 10 JERSEY SELLER) is one.   He might not be efficient right now, but come on..  Year in and year out yall say crap like this about Melo…  And it’s just sad…

His contract is the worst in the league because Kobes expires after this year.  The Knicks wanted him because their alternative was not having him at all.  If he didn’t have a no trade clause he would already be gone.  Phil is no dummy, he knows exactly what Melo is.

This would be an excellent trade for the Knicks and terrible for Atlanta. Atlanta’s system and success is predicated on ball movement, versatility and interchangeable parts. Melo is a great scorer and individual player but the way he scores would take away from their overall team chemistry. Plus, they would be left with no center besides tavares on their roster and he is not a guy that is ready to play big mins.

What if Atlanta trades their first round pick for a young, “established”, athletic wing instead of an unproven rookie? Oh wait….

     EXACTLY hoffmann6…

I’m sorry, I said I wanted wing talent yes. But I don’t want to decimate my entire organization so that we have Tavares starting at the 5 dear lord.

I don’t want a big name like Melo, I want someone like Derozan, Galinari, Hayward, Barnes, Beal, Butler, etc. who are capable of playing great team ball, aren’t divas, and could fit the system. Melo is his own system. As in give me the ball and let me shoot.

Dont get me wrong, Melo is a great player. But I don’t want him coming in and trashing my Hawk’s chemistry.

Melo has never turned the superstar corner.  He is a very good NBA player who never panned out as a transformative player.  Only Knicks fans think he is worth superstar players in a trade.  No GM is going to give away his best players, and first round picks for Melo and his contract.  We already know what happens when you do that, it’s called the Knicks.  KP has way more trade value at this point.  Then again, the Zen Master might be able to jedi mind trick Sam Hinkie into trading JO for Melo and the next 10 second round picks.  I kid, I kid.

Sign me up for this trade as a Knicks fan. I’d be happy to get anything of value and the cap relief that would come with trading Melo. I don’t think any GM, besides maybe Billy King, is dumb enough to trade anything valuable for Melo at this point. It’s time to build around KP, but unfortunately we won’t be able to fully do this until Melo is gone.

Melo has a huge contract so would be hard to move plus I think he possibly has a no trade clause and the Knicks owner would be reluctant to lose him. Atlanta would also want to maximize any deal they did for Schroeder.

If I am the Knicks I would take Rudy Gay, Kosta Koufos, and Seth Curry in about half a second.

Part of the reason Melo is struggling so much is because he’s not getting those calls you see other top tier Nba players get from the referees. He getsnno benefit of the doubt on any of his misses and is often fouled.

Do they play much small ball with Carmelo at the 4 and Porzingas at the 5?

Carmelo was effective at the 4 a few years ago.  He is also a great 4 when he plays for Team USA.

He was never an ELITE athlete and he must be a bit slower than he used to be…

Interesting point by Memphis above, had to smile at the mention of Porz and smallball in the same sentence given Porz is 7ft 2/3ins. But it is basically a more attacking frontcourt option without Robin Lopez to anchor the team at C.

The Knicks can certainly run this as an option and may look for a younger SG/SF who could pick up the slack minutes when Melo moves to PF or is on the bench. With a shooter at SF it would really allow the Knicks to spread the play with the triangle.
