What were the Kings thinking passing on Noah Vonleh taking ANOTHER shooter in Stauskas?

They already have plenty of shooters and ZERO and I mean ZERO defense. Vonleh would have been a perfect fit next to Cousins with his great defense and shot blocking.

I live in Sac so I get a lot of Kings games. If they could play even a LICK of defense they would have a shot of making the playoffs In the tough western conference. A front court of Cousins, Vonleh, and Gay could have given a lot of teams problems. Not to mention that Jason Thompson and Carl Landry are both pretty bad. I mean, this is downright idiocy.

I had Vonleh at 8 to Sacramento. I had Gordon at 5. People told me to swap them as Vonleh wouldn’t fall. So the 8th pick comes up and I’m saying to myself that’s why you don’t trade picks before the draft because people can fall. Sure Sacramento was gonna take the great fit of soft offensive touch and stroke with great rebounding and good shot blocking to pair with Cousins. The commish comes out and announces Nik Stauskas? Did Vonleh make too much sense? I’m as big a Stauskas fan there is but Vonleh was higher on my board and he fit a need for the Kings more than Nik. Nik should be a good player but Vonleh and Cousins could’ve been a hell of a big man combo.

Vonleh looks like a great fit on paper, but he is not — or at least not yet. He is extremely raw and his feel for the game is questionable. He has huge hands, but drops a lot of balls. He is said to have a great shot (based on a very low volume of shots in college), but did not shoot well in workouts and has only OK form. He is said to be a great defender, but his jump rate is very slow and his lateral movement is below average. He is not strong enough to bang and not fast enough to guard a stretch. Vonleh will experience serious growing pains. If he’s a starter on your team in the next two years, you are not going far.

I had him rated #8 on my board, but that was as a long-term project. Vonleh may eventually be the type of player that would fit well next to Cousins (or might totally bust), but IMO he is really 2-3 years away from being a meaningful contributor on any NBA team. I’m not saying you should love what happened in the draft, but just that Vonleh would be far from a quick fix at the 4 for the Kings.

rondo could be dealt and kings are in need if isiah leaves . smart and james young prolly will start eventually together in boston. the only reason i see kings taking stauskas is that something is in works whether its rondo or something while dealing nik or even mclemore who knows

I think Stauskas goes to Boston for Rondo.  I see young as a three and Jeff Greens replacement.

Now they can trade Ben Mac (like the rumors suggest) for a better contributor, that will do so right away…  After taking Thomas Robinson 2 years ago I think Sac did the smart thing and opted not to take a guy with huge question marks…  Especially since they still have Derrick Williams (who SHOULD play 4, he’s not a 3, stats proves he’s better at the 4)…  You have to ask yourself, is Noah better than Derrick Williams right now?  If the answer is no, then I don’t see the issue here…

True, you do have to ask yourself that, and right now Williams is better than Vonleh. But I expect that in 2 or 3 years Vonleh will be better than Williams and end up being a huge steal for the Hornets. I thought they would stick with Zeller who they selected last year, but Vonleh will end being better down the road. Kudos to MJ for picking up the sliding Vonleh, who I don’t think anyone had him sliding all the way to 9! (He almost became available for the Sixers at 10! Bet Hinkie didn’t even see this happening.) Yes, Vonleh is raw right now and needs to develop but I think he will do so and become the better pick in the end. I’m not quite sure what the Kings were thinking when they selected Stauskas over him. Yes, Vonleh isn’t better than Williams right now, but 2 or 3 years down the road he should be. Kings are trying to win now and make the playoffs next year, but stop thinking about who will help you the most right now and take the guy who will help you the most down the road. Cavs did this by selecting Wiggins over Parker and keeping Wiggins instead of trading him for Embiid. Which was a surprise to me, I thought the Cavs would be just stupid enough to do the opposite by drafting Wiggins and then trading him to get Embiid. Cavs were smart and Kings were not.

That’s not really fair to say since the new owners and front office have only have 1 season to get going.

Jason Thompson and Carl Landry have three more years of not so tradeable contracts + Derrick Williams for the next season. Vonleh would bring a defense, but they would have a logjam at PF

The only thing that Vonleh can bring on defense right now is rebounding. He wasn’t a good defensive player by any means for Indiana, he struggled a lot off the ball in college with simpler schemes and rotations, I can only imagine he isn’t going to be a defensive specialist in a more sophisticated Nba defense.

I doubt this will happen, but they may be looking at Nik Stauskas as a big point guard. A few people said that leading up to draft season, talking about they saw him as a bigger Steph Curry type point. He led the Big 10 in assist to turnover ratio at 3.3:1. So if the Kings are looking at that, I’m snot sure about it with people like Payton and Ennis still on the board, but hey who knows.

Chad Ford said some GMs liked him because of his ability to play some point, but we all know he’s rising for his amazing 3 point shooting. Stauskas said he’s modeling his game after Curry and Klay Thompson.

I think a trade will happen, but if not, this could be their idea.
