I might get killed for this, the more i evaluate Kevin Knox, the more i see a bit of Jayson Tatum in him.  He’s long, agile, forward, who has defensive upside, and is an offensive missmatch.  Like Tatum, Knox wasn’t the best shooter in college, and relied heavily on awkward drives to the basket, and finishing with length and agility.  I remember alot of draft evaluators questioning possible Tatum’s fit with the sixers due to his awkwardness on the peremter and unreliable jumpshot in prompting the Fultz deal. He isn’t the cerebral, high IQ player Tatum is, but i think he has just as much upside.

Knox and Tatum are similarly sized and played similar roles in college, but Tatum is a little bit better than Knox at just about everything on a basketball court. At Duke, Tatum averaged twice as many blocks+steals per game as Knox, shot a better FT% (which better predicts 3 point accuracy), and had a higher assist%. Knox had slightly better shot selection, but Tatum has clearly improved in that regard. Knox will likely perform best as a stretch 4 who attacks closeouts on offense and defends the other team’s lesser forward on defense.  Would be a great fit in DC where Oubre or Porter could guard the better forward.

I think everyone would agree Tatum’s ball handling is exceptional. I didn’t see it at Duke. He really improved a ton over the summer between leaving Duke and getting to Boston. Knox will have to show that handle and iso game that Tatum has.

Not to knock what you see, but who would you compare Knox to that’s ahead of Tatum because it’s kind of odd to compare guys that are 1-year apart in age?

(I’ve scratched my comparisons from that past that were in similar fashion.)

I compare Knox to Tobias Harris or Jabari Parker

I have Tobias Harris as well in my archived comparisons thread.

I see the obvious Tobias Harris comparison, but i see more agility and explosiveness than Harris. Knox seems more agile and lankier than Harris.  We’ll see, Tatum is a bituntouchable incomparisons. Lol. But i prefer Knox over Bridges. Bamba, or Young.

Knox is more of a Tobias Harris type. Very skilled but he needs better footwork to be Tatum. He also needs a go to move. He does not have a go to move and he needs one.

     Maybe Tatum-lite.

than Knox. What I fear with Knox is that he doesn’t reach his ceiling as it can be the case with long SF/tweeners.

He’s decent at everything but has not that special skill which can make him  special player right now. Handling and shooting needs work and consistency, athleticism is ok but will not be enough against SF. He’s a bit stuck between positions as he lacks athleticism and handling to be a perfect SF but is not tough enough to play inside. He’s not a good passer either and defense is way too light to be a strength.

Harris is a good comparison, a poor man’s Rudy Gay too. We’ll see if he can put in the adequate work to find the right spot in the league.
