Willy Cauley Stein really shined tonight. Texas is pretty huge and really gave them a run for their money. But the speed and quickness of Kentucky’s big men (namely WCS) made all of the difference. WCS is literally the fastest player on Kentucky (tested) and his hands are everywhere. What in the world is his NBA role?

They finally let Karl Towns shoot a jumper. Something they should do every time another team actually has size. Towns is an enigma to me. I’ve seen great footwork, swift moves, blocked shots, and power moves, but I’ve also seen a lot of slow, lazy, lethargic, half-moves. Which guy is he? I’d take one of them 1st and the other 7th.

Miles Turner didn’t help himself at all with all the scouts watching. He forced one jumper and didn’t force anything else. He was totally stopped by WCS. Totally. He couldn’t get the ball and didn’t make anything happen when he did. The guy has to make himself known because some see him as a future center and tonight made it look like there’s no way he could be one. How about some aggression? At least he wasn’t outdone by one defender: playing Kentucky is like playing 5 on 8.

Jonathan Holmes helped himself tonight. He’s not on my radar and he missed some shots, but he really hustled and was one of the few Longhorns to make something happened. He guarded guys with 40 pound advantages and they couldn’t take advantage. Before tonight he was also 50% for 3.

Ugly game to watch, unfortunately. Way too many touch calls in the post and off the ball (both ways). Great defense by both teams.

The twins were not very good tonight. Aaron has been shooting the ball poorly all year and tonight Andrew made some questionable decisions.

WCS was easily the star of the game, playing more minutes than any Kentucky player all season. In the game against Providence, he was put on their leading scorer who was a 6’6 guard averaging around 24 a game. WCS held him to single digits. He’s a truly versatile defensive prospect and the Tyson Chandler comparisons seem pretty spot on when looking at Tyson’s early years.

Holmes looks like a different player from his first few years at Texas. Versatile guy that makes plays and is worth a look from a team in the draft. Most of the Texas bigs were in foul trouble, so it was hard to get a read on them. Ridley struggled with the physicality of Kentucky’s bigs, committing three offensive fouls posting up.

Ulis’ box score won’t blow anyone away, but he is a phenomenal player. I believe if he was 6’2 he would be a top 5 pick whenever he came out.

I agree. Ulis should be on the floor most of the game. He’s a huge difference maker.

Aaron Harrison is killing his own stock. He probably should’ve declared for the draft last year.

I’m not sure how they should improve their offense though. Ulis, Booker, Lyles, WCS, and Towns? It seems like the 2nd unit scores because Ulis moves the ball, Booker spreads the floor, and Lyles kind of spreads the floor. However, if you took Poythress out, the incredible 1st unit defense wouldn’t be as amazing.

WCS moves on defense. Great lateral movement. Was even able to effectively guard wing players on the perimeter. I know Karl Towns’ has a more diversified offensive game, but I think Stein will be a defensive terror who can cover much more ground and give help defense.
