AdamJCallejaParticipantOubre played a season high 16 minutes against Georgetown today (still not much). He again showed flashes of that high level explosiveness he made scouts drool over this past month. But after the game Bill Self told the media that he plans on playing Oubre at the 4 spot after this game. He thinks it will cause a mismatch against oppoonents while oubre still has the length to contain opposing 4s on defense. I thought this was interesting and I’m starting to see a lot of Thaddeus Young in his game. They have the same physical attributes and their game is also similar but Oubre shoots it a lot better. What do you guys think?

SnowtaParticipantHe’ll probably be able to play the 4 in college especially coming off the bench, but I definitely don’t see him playing 4 in the NBA. At least I wouldn’t want him playing as a 4, but I guess that’s just my preference. He’s smaller than Thad and Thad gets bullied by a lot of starting PF’s in the NBA. Just comparing him to the other PF’s in this class I think tells you why he shouldn’t be a PF in the NBA. Alexander and Harrell would both abuse him if they were matched up. I like stretch fours, but I think Oubre’s too small to matchup with 4’s in the NBA.

Lotto StudParticipantI for one, never thought Thaddeus Young would be a Stretch-4 coming out of HS/Georgia Tech. Anything is possible once you are placed into a certain system. A better example of the Stretch-4 reference would be Troy Williams from Indiana.

Big_C_KUParticipantThe last 2 games things seem to be slowing down for Oubre. You can tell he’s starting to react instead of think so much out there. He was able to get into the lane and even though he didn’t finish most of them it was nice to see, especially drawing a couple fouls. He making smart plays the majority of the time now and starting to help the team more than hurt when he’s out there.
As far as the stretch 4, I think Self is trying to find minutes on the floor for Oubre as well as create mismatches for him. He doesn’t have a very good handle and his jump shot isn’t respectable enough to allow him the angles to drive. Defensively he still ball watches some although that seems to be improving some as well there. I think playing the stretch 4 can spread out the defense allowing bigger lanes for Mason, Selden, and Ellis. Can give Oubre the ability to drive on slow bigs, and give a release valve on drives for his teammates when his defender tries to slide down and help defend.
Oubre will more than likely see half his minutes at the 4 and the other half at the 3 and probably get anywhere from 12-16 minutes a game going forward. I don’t expect him to play enough or be good enough to put himself in the 2015 draft discussion but I expect things to build towards 2016 for Oubre.

Bill Walton’s KneesParticipantThis has more so do with the Self’s desire to play Frank Mason and Devonte Graham at the same time then anything else. KU is at their best when they share the backcourt together, which pushes Selden to the 3 spot, and Ellis to the 4. With Ellis being KU’s most consistent player, he won’t be seeing the bench much, which could result in an unhappy Mr. Oubre.

HitsterParticipantKelly has the wingspan to play as a 4 especially guarding the perimeter but at 200lbs, he’d be a bit light going against stronger and heavier NBA PFs which certain teams possess. I’d also want a strong defensive C behind in in the NBA.

TheLastWordParticipantIn order to be a "stretch 4", you have to be a good shooter. Just a small problem with his strategy 🙂

HitsterParticipantVery good point above by TheLastWord.
The wikipedia definition of a stretch 4 is :-
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stretch_four
I admit I’d always thought of it as more how they define a cornerman, I’d always seen a peak Rashard Lewis as an ideal stretch 4. In effect where a combo forward who was more a SF could play PF if they had a big defensive C alongside them.
Dirk Nowitzki I had always just considered one of the greatest shooting big men ever with an elite mid range and 3 point game.
