At the end of last season I did as I do every year and took inventory of the current state of the Philadelphia 76ers.  I have been and will be a Philly fan for life and looking at our roster, I very much liked what I saw (though I will not dare to claim that I foresaw their torrid start).  I found Jrue Holiday to be the most intriguing player on the team both offensively and defensively.  After his sizeable improvement from his rookie season to his sophmore season, I expected Jrue to take another step forward as he became further entrenched as the point guard of the future for this young team.

These are Jrue’s numbers from last season; 14 ppg, 6.5 apg, 4.0 rpg, 1.5 steals, 35.4 mpg, 2.7 TO, he shot 0.446 from the field and got to the line 2.5 times per game.

I expected for his 3rd NBA season an increase in scoring, a slight increase in assists, and an increased ability to get to the free throw line where he shoots a very respectable 0.822 percent.  I believed that this would happen due to a growing comfort level with his teammates and an increase in confidence…instead…

This is what Jrue has done so far in his 3rd NBA season; 13.4 ppg, 4.2 apg, 3.2 rpg, 1.6 steals, 35 mpg, 2.3 TO, he is shooting 0.414 from the field, and has been getting to the line 2.2 times per game.

This seasons numbers show a regression in scoring, rebounding, passing, fg%, all while being leff proficient at getting to the stripe.  Jrue’s defense has been stellar once again, but the offensive portion of his game has taken a hit in basically every major category.

Whats really troubling about these numbers is that Jrue is less proficient at getting to the line and has been showing a fairly substantial decrease in his shooting percentage.  There is virtually no difference in his minutes played.  Jrue is also posting the 8th best PER on the 76ers (14.2) after posting a PER of (15.4) last season…good for 5th…

So my question here is what exactly is it that is causing this regression in what looked to be one of the NBA’s promising up and comming point guards?

Is this a product of the condensed season? Is it simply a slump or a loss in confidence? have opposing coaches found a way to slow Jrue down? Is it a product of the type of offense being run? Or is it something else?  I am interested to hear some opinions on this topic because I cant put my finger on exactly what is going on here.

improved play may be taking shots and stats away from him.

He’s playing pretty well tonight.. Him and Rubio are going at it.. Jrue has 16pts 4rebs 2asts 3stls 0t/o Rubio has 20pts 5rebs 4asts 1t/o nearing the end of the 3rd quarter…. Fun watching them go at it.. Jrue has been showing some real ability to score in the lane, using a sweet floater a couple times.. Rubio’s jumpshot is falling tonight, when it is he’s really a special player. His quickness is really underrated as well.. They’re both crossing each other up a lot..

Jrue has been taking more shots per game this season than last season 12.2 last year to 12.8 this year. Lou’s play hasnt taken any playing time away from Jrue either he averaged 35.4 mpg last year and 35.0 this year.  Even when you compare the 2 seasons on a per 36 minute basis, statistics show a decrease across the board.

what is he 21, he’s just going through the trials and tribulations of being a young player…nothing to worry about..his statistic regression might have to do with teams actually putting much more focus on him …at the end of the day his team is winning and 1st in there division.

He had a nice game tonight. I dont watch the 76ers at all unless they are on TNT or NBAtv or something but just from watching tonight, nobody puts up big numbers for the 76ers, because of their scheme and style of play. Andre Iguodala, a player that I consider to be an elite NBA wing, averages like 12 ppg. I think both of them could score more, but because of their scheme, neither forces alot.

I don’t think either of them are pure scorers either, its just not their styles of play, which unfortunatly sums up most of their team right now, and may be the single most important factor is determining their eventual destiny in the playoffs.

I think the low assist numbers are more indicative of how many capable playmakers Phiily has. With Williams, Holiday, Igoudala, Turner getting a more prominent role. I dont really get to watch many Philly games, but he seems pretty intelligent and his turnovers are down, so I think its more circumstance than any serious issue with him. Scoring and shooting % im not sure though, maybe he is just getting more looks late in the shot clock, or is shooting tougher shots.

i would say doug gave jrue a diffent role this year ir seems like jrue isnt such a playmaker seems like iggy has been playn alot of point forward and jrue has been taking more shots this year instead of play making i always thought jrue was gne b more of a playmaker this year but doug gave him a different role it seems

Everyone has stepped up their game on this squad, that is why we are on top of the Atlantic.  Scoring is even more spread out across the board than last year.  This team is also full of playmakers, so not all the assists are going to be primarily coming from Jrue.  Turner is getting more PT, Iggy is having a phenomenal season, and Lou has been on fire so they are seeing more touches than purely getting looks based off of Jrue’s playmaking.

Individual stats are going to be as eye-popping when you have a squad playing as much like a sole unit as the Sixers have this year.
