So John Wall, obviously heard a lot about him this past NCAA season but being overseas I never really got to see him play. I’ve caught maybe 2 Kentucky games this season and youtube videos and highlighs don’t really tell the whole story. So I was wondering, how do people think his game compares to the ones he’s mostly compared with ie Rose (obviously), Rondo and Westbrook? nbadraft.net, draftexpress and all those websites have reports on his game but what I really want to know is how his game differs from those comparisons with other players and how his skills stack up against them? Now I know he’s John Wall not Rose or Rondo or anybody else but there’s got to be similarities and differences that can be pointed out. So help me out please I would like to know a bit more about this guy’s play. Anything from his handles, athleticism, court vision, shooting, anything helpful would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Here is what I see after watching John countless times this year:

Wall is more athletic, naturally than rose or rondo and could be parallel to westbrook with continued maturity
He is not as quick laterally as rose but he is disruptive and will be a great defensive player
He is not the floor-leader that Rondo is, but that could be acquired with experience
He isn’t as strong as westbrook but his body is continuing to develop
His end-to-end speed is incredible and he will instantly be one of the fastest straight-line players in the league
He is not as crafty of a scorer as rondo but nobody is…that being said, he still finds ways to score
    He is an underrated passer!
He can shoot the ball but he is streaky and his consistency is still developing
He has great explosiveness and can dunk powerfully with ease
    He is a play-maker, a big-game player, and a leader

    Weaknesses:
    3PT Shooting
    Body Control
    Shot Selection

    Strength:
    Explosiveness
    Passing
    Play-Making

My comparison is Dwyane Wade. He plays exactly like Dwyane Wade did in that year Marquette got to the Elite 8. I think as he get stronger (like Wade has), the comparison will be easier to see.

I watched every single Kentucky game this year (Which is hard, being a UK fan in Mississippi lol) so I got to see all of his ups and downs

–He will be one of the top 3 fastest players in the NBA, easily the fastest in college
–He can pass very well, but passes better in transition than in a half-court set.
–He doesn’t get much elevation on his shot. Very streaky but makes a lot of shots under pressure; is a good mid-range shooter, however
–He can be one of the NBA’s best perimeter defenders
Rose is stronger and Westbrook is a little stronger
–He finds lanes very well; is very crafty with his body in air or going through the paint
–He has a very explosive first step and can jump out of the gym (Rose can jump a little higher though)
–He is very vocal and will be a good leader. He’s louder than Rose is and gets the crowd behind him fast

    Strengths:
    Athleticism and explosiveness
    Speed
    Defense/Length
    Passing
    Leadership
    Mid-range shot

    Weaknesses:
    Range
    Over-penetrating

Iggy. that’s exactly what i was going to say. WADE. I’m not saying he will ever be on Wade’s level but he reminds me the most of wade.

How can you compare him to Wade? Wall really knows how to get his teammates the ball and is a complete PG. Wade isn’t a pg at all and runs the give and go to hell. While I would say Wade needs the ball in his hands to thrive, he will never be a distributor. Jimmy Wall is going to a great one, he will improve his less than consistent outside jumper and be unstoppable. Kid has great court vision, bball iq, and can get to the cup any time he wants. Rondo will probably never become a great outside shooter because of his big hands. Wall on the other hand shouldn’t have any trouble becoming a good to great shooter, as long as he’s willing to put in the work, something he seems willing to do. To me he’s a much more explosive D-Will (albeit with a shakier outside shot), I think Wall will be the best PG within 5 years of entering the L.

^John Wall isn’t a complete PG. He hasn’t shown the ability to be a playmaker in half-court sets to qualify as a complete PG. Also turnover prone. I think he is a fearless and athletic slasher with long arms, and he has a decent jump shot that lacks range just like Wade. Also good at picking up assists in the drive and dish like Wade was at Marquette. Comparisons not that far off at all.

And how can you say he plays nothing like Dwyane Wade and then compare him to Deron Williams?

I dont get why people dont think Wall is a complete pg, dude knows how to get his team involved. Go watch his hs tapes, you can see his court vision even then. I don’t think Wade and D-Will are similar at all, but thats jmo. What makes you feel DWade and DWill are similar players? And of course I never said he plays nothing like DWade, I see the comparison, but Wade isn’t a PG or a distributor and Wall is.

wade averaged 6.5 ass/gm last year. Please stop saying he can’t distribute. Wade takes a lot of shots cuz he doesn’t get a lot of scoring help from his teammates. Wade is one of the most complete players in the game.

I also think Wall’s D reminds me a lot of Wade. blocking shots and sniping steals.

Saying Wade can’t distribute is like saying Kobe can’t distribute. They both have to take a bunch of shots (More so Wade cuz he has no team) but if they really focused on trying to dish it out, they could both average 9, 10 assists

I can definitely agree with the Wade comparison stated earlier but Taylor Condrin is basically on point with everything, he broke down pretty much every aspect of Wall and how he compares to other player comparisons.

Yeah I’ve always thought his game was a lot like Wade’s, similar build, similar body control. Ability to get to the charity stripe and finishing ability are similar. He probably won’t ever score as much as Wade, but in a few years it wouldn’t be surprising to see Wall averaging 23-24 ppg.

I do see a little Rondo in his game, their ability to create and their amazing quickness/athleticism/speed are similar.

To the guy saying Devin Harris can shoot….that’s pretty funny b/c he’s actually a terrible shooter. Here are his shooting stats the last two years.

    FG’s: 811-1923 FG% 42.2

    3’s: 124-437 3p%: 28.4

The stats speak for themselves. He is actually a terrible shooter….I guess you’ve never seen him play.

i guess you have not watched devin harris enough the stats that you have presented just tell 1 part of the story and stats can be wrong, thats like saying rondo is a good shooter because he shoots almost 50% from the field when in all actuality most of his points come from the paint, i never said harris was a good three point shooter i said shooter and he is a really good mid range shooter if you actually watched the games instead of going straight off stats of a player who has been hurt for the last three seasons
    FG’s: 811-1923 FG% 42.2

    3’s: 124-437 3p%: 28.4
