I caught the first half of the South Florida vs. Memphis game yesterday, and I couldn’t help but notice the size and athletic ability of 6’10” 250 lb freshman John Egbunu. He’s raw on offense, and isn’t much more than a dunker and lob finisher at this point, but he struck me as a guy to keep an eye on. He ended up going for 20 points and 14 rebounds against a decent size Memphis front line, that includes the leaner, quicker version of Shaq Goodwin.

He also went for 15 points and 8 rebounds against Oklahoma State, but to be fair, they don’t field a very big front court. Still he put together a number of nice games already, and I think with some more experience he could be a nice defensive NBA center, and maybe more if he works on his offensive game.

He looks to me as at least one if not two years away, but he moves well, has size for an NBA 5 and is already producing well for a freshman.

I agree with you that for a freshman, his size, athleticism, body and ability to defend the interior is impressive for a freshman…He needs to work on his footwork and a year or 2 to learn how to play the game…But he could be an interesting prospect in a year or 2…..

They have a 7 footer that rarely plays..I cant remember his name, but he made an impressive move and scored on a dunk ,toward the end of the game…It was his only basket….

He’s one to watch for sure.  He’s got an awesome frame for a big.  He’s already chiseled and he can easily put on more weight.  He’s got a big wingspan too and plays wide defensively.  Not the quickest guy but shows solid defensive instincts.  He’s not much offensively, but he does have have a jump hook and knows the basics of carving out space.  At the very least he could be a rebounder, shot blocker, inside physical presence.  Reminds me of some of the bigs that UConn used to get.

Pat Young ruined his own upside by becoming a muscle head.

I think Egbunu has much better length.

Siggy it’s hilarious to me that you say this because I say the same thing all the time. The dude never needed to put on anymore weight since his senior year of high school. He was jacked already at 18. Had bounce, size, strength all he needed to work on was his game literally. Had everything physically.

after almost 4 yrs,it seems like young still havent improved or expanded his game…he’s doing a great job this year of using his strength to outmuscle players..but i doubt if he’ll be able to do that that the next level…

with his lack of length, skills & poor shooting,i dont see him getting drafted…
