Against Minnesota last night, he posted 27pts, 6rebs, 3assists, 5three’s, 3blks & zero turnovers. All in just 22 minutes. His previous game against a more seasoned Purdue team, he scored just 2 points. A tale of 2 games.

Granted Minnesota is only 14-14 on the year & near the bottom of the conference standings….. but to me this is an eye-opening performance for a guy who has the exact type of physical profile to succeed as a modern NBA center.

I’ve seen some Serge Ibaka comparisons, but let me tell you right now that Jaren is a much more cereberal player than Serge Ibaka was early in his career. Watch the highlights. He took his defender off the dribble multiple times, blew by his defender with a nice spin-move to his left for a layup, & even made a couple pocket passes within the paint. His shot has a slightly low release point, but he gets it off pretty quick. And due to his height he shouldn’t have issues letting it fly with efficiency at the next level.

If I’m Orlando, I am all over this guy during the draft…. and may even be willing to trade up for him if he’s taken before they pick. I like the idea of a front court consisting of Jaren, Isaac & AG. New GM John Hammond has a history of drafting long, rangy players that are less proven on the stat sheet within the amateur ranks. Based upon potential alone, i’d be surprised if he’s not selected top 4 this June.

The anti-Trae Young.  Not much hype.  Then Traeless goes 0-9 from downtown.  Also, looks a bit on the wild, small, un-athletic side.

Jaren Jackson, Jr. COULD end up being the best guy out of this draft.  AT WORST looks like an IDEAL third big man.

The specs on JJ Jr.: the league is getting sneaky big again, but with more length, athleticism, versatility, and shooting with extra above-the-rim action on both sides of the ball (wow, that sounds dirty).  So, Jackson 2.0 looks like a prototype 4 in the Brave New New NBA.

Being able to shoot threes, spot the open man, guard the perimeter and protect the paint while playing either frontcourt spot…count me in.

I am also growing tired of the Trae Young hype.  Damn near impossible to watch anyone play Oklahoma the way these announcers are calling the game.  When Its Dickie V’s turn I am pretty sure his head is going to explode or his face is going to melt off.

I like Jackson. He will be a player. I can see him being a young Vin Baker with a 3 ball. Thats a good talent. Im not sure if he can make as good a decaf almond milk cappucino as Vin, but hopefully for him he never has to find out.

But Jackson in Orlando…? You really like the fit with Gordon and Isaac? I dont see how playing 3 x 4s really solves much for them. I consider the best position for all three of them is power forward. They also still have Vooch and the kabillion dollar man, Biyombo. Its a bit of a logjam for minutes. That does not help anyone’s development. I disagree with playing AG at the 3 and Jackson at the 5 permanently.

If the Magic are at the top of the board I’m inclined to say they should trade down. Their roster is a joke. They need one guy who is a clear cut leader at their position, and at the moment, you have AG, Isaac, Vucevic, Fournier, Simmons all floating around and none of those guys are the alpha they need, evidenced by the fact the team is in the NBA toilet. They need an alpha PG, so Im saying Trae Young is the man, despite the hype. I am against them drafting him though if they have a top 4 pick. They should flip down a few spots and gain an asset.

One thing that may be interesting is if they offer their pick for Fultz…. is it worth the risk? Would Philly do it? Would the Magic? I’m inclined to say its worth the risk for both teams at the moment, but only if the pick is 5-10. Magic may score a bargain. They may get burned. Philly somewhat saves face and cuts their losses. I tend to think Fultz will be a contributor when he’s back though. I can see him easily being comparable to Dejounte Murray, even at his worst.

Serge Ibaka is a good comparison for now but JJ has so much more upside. He has a quicker more natural release on his jumper, he is more fluid and explosive and gives a more consistent effort defensively and at such a young age. When Ibaka was his age he shot below 70% from the FT line and wouldnt dare shoot from 3. But to have a Serge Ibaka type player with upside on a rookie contract in todays NBA is extremely valuable and will attract teams early in the draft.

Cavs could potentially snag him.. 3.4 blocks in 22 minutes.. Solid shooter, great athlete, a potential two-way player.. I like that fit
