I have seen a lot of mixed reviews of Young. I have heard some people say he could be nick young/jr smith type who contributes points but that’s about it. I have heard others who think that he could be better than that. I think he could be a great 3rd option starting or a awesome 6th man in his career. What about you guys?

I wasn’t too impressed by James Young, he had some good moments but when you take as many shots as he did you are bound to do something right eventually.  Handle and quickness were good for college but I think they will be weaknesses in the nba that hold him back from being a significant scorer and he doesn’t do anything else like you said, I think he is a role player off the bench.

I know this is a little weird, but I think his ceiling is later career Vince Carter.

No, no, no, not the Vince Carter who had his ACLs and put up 27 ppg in his 2nd year in the league, and dazzled fans with above the rim acrobatics, but the VC who put up 18-22 ppg in NJ and Orlando.

The VC that was a very good 3 point shooter, and occasional slasher. The VC that used his great length and size at the 2 spot to rebound well for his position.

I think Young is essentially a big wing with good but not great athletic ability, a strong outside shot, and decent playmaking abilities, but really a guy who would much rather shoot a 24 footer than drive to the rim and slash. Not a great defender, but adequate. There’s no two players that are exactly alike, but when I think about what kind of guy James Young could be in the NBA I usually end up describing a 31-33 year old Vince Carter.

I think Young could be that good, a 18-22 ppg scorer who does a lot of things really well and someone that can be a 1A or 1B scoring option for a 7-8 seed like Carter and Jefferson were in NJ back in the day, or a 2rd option for a better team like VC was in Orlando .

how many games have you seen James Young play in? His ceiling isnt that high. not even close.

he doesnt project to bring anything to the table other than 3 point shooting and even that is iffy. He’s a streaky shooter.

Young cant play defense, its as simple as that. I can see him falling out of rotations fast by bad defensive efforts.

Young is soft, on defense and on offense. he doesnt like contact. he has bad instincts and has a low bball IQ. He’s an above average athlete with average speed/quickness. Bad passer & no handle.

he’s gonna Bust. His physcial tools have scouts/people very high on him, but as a basketball player theres not much to like.

At least 10, including all 5 tourney games. Ceiling is best case, not all players reach their ceiling, but I’m not backing down that Young has that kind of potential. His floor is iffy since he has a ways from getting to his peak, but I think he has upside.

There were games where he looked like the best player on the court this year, and the kid is 19. I think your use of the word bad is a little exaggerated, but they’re not his strongest areas. Still, in his prime, I think he can at least be average in those areas.

Maybe he’ll bust, maybe he won’t, but I like him as a long term prospect. He looked like the best player on UK in the Final 4, when you compare him then to the beginning of the year, I see no reason at all to think he’s not going to keep getting better.

i know what upside/ceiling means, and at his best the VC you described isnt it.

he had a good tourney run, especially in the final four, but looking at the whole year, he had a average year. inefficent from the field and from 3.

his skillset is limited. he cant create for himself or others. he ONLY goes to his left and with such average speed/quickness NBA defenders will contain that with ease.

When i say bad, he was a bad defender. at times during the season, he was a liability on that end. in the sweet 16 against louisville, he was a straight liablity. Him getting fouled out actually helped Kentucky win that game.

ialready stated the many things bad in his game. Only way he can have success in the NBA is if he hits his 3 pointers at a real good rate, because i dont project him bringing anything else.

I see mocks of people having him in the top 10. i Wouldnt spend a lottery pick on him. He should be in the late teens/20s.

I was lucky and got to go to the Final Four this year.  Young was far and away the most impressive prospect out of the four teams, with Napier being close (was forcing a bit though).  I think he has a fairly high ceiling.  If he had been the top dog at another major school, I think people would be talking about him as a top 10 pick in the 5-10 range.  Instead he was overshadowed by Randle and the Harrison twins.  I really like JoeWolf’s assessment of him.  He’s not going to be a All NBA player, but with his combination of size, youth (still only 18 years old!), shooting and slashing, he could be a very good 2nd or 3rd option on a good team.  I think people are sleeping on him.

All 3 players, Nick Young, JR Smith, Vince Carter has good ball handling skills…  Add that to the fact all have NBA All-Star caliber silky moves with dribble step backs and such, it’s hard for me to see James Young doing that…  He very mechanical with everything he does…  I think Michael Redd is accurate and not just because he’s left hand either…

I think his ceiling is Michael Redd too. Michael Redd avg 26 pts one season. I don’t know if Young will ever do that, but I could see him score 20/gm at some point in his career.  You don’t have be a great dribbler to score a lot. I think he has the potential to be one of the best shooters in this draft he has good form, a quick release, and great size for his position. If he’s in the right situation I think he could be really good. I think the Wolves should take him. I feel like he’d be a great pair for a ball dominant, pass-first pg like Rubio. Kentucky was 260th in the country in assists last year. I think that’s why he was so inefficienct. They didn’t have any great playmakers and I think for Young to be effective he needs someone else that can create for him. I know he’s not an elite athlete, but that dunk against UCONN I should hope showed he’s athletic enough.
