Anthony Davis may be the early favorite for the 2012-13 NBA Rookie of the Year, being dubbed by many experts as the best player the enter the league in years.
But lets take a look at some of the other early favorites, based on the following criteria: 1) high likelihood of contributing right away, 2) the expectation of big minutes or a large role from day one, and 3) can be one of the team’s best players right away.
Looking at those factors, here are some rookies who could have a chance: Damian Lillard — he’s shined in Summer League, will start from day one, and could put up big numbers as a first-year pro after a three-year college career; Michael Kidd-Gilchrist — he may not score like most ROY’s do, but if MKG can stuff the box score and affect the game in a number of ways on both ends of the court, he has a strong chance in this race. Also, he’s immediately one of the Bobcats’ best players; Dion Waiters — the No. 4 overall pick has a great feel for the game, but will need to improve his conditioning and his shooting efficiency in order for the Cavs to make it back-to-back ROYs; Jonas Valanciunas — the No. 6 overall pick in 2011, Valanciunas is expected to provide an immediate presence for the Raptors next season at the tender age of 20; Donatas Motiejunas — another 7-foot Lithuanian, Motiejunas has shown nice touch in the Summer League and could be the best of Houston’s young big men. Big minutes could be available for the taking.
By no means are these the only other candidates, but we have to believe that it could be tough for guys Bradley Beal, Harrison Barnes and Thomas Robinson to put up big numbers when they’re on rosters with so many other options.
As for a darkhorse? That could be Terrence Ross, whose soft shooting touch and acrobatic dunks could quickly make him a fan favorite up in Toronto.
