mikeyvthedonParticipantThey are both great athletes, but I for one do not know if they are steals as of yet. Selby at 49 definitely seems like he has a chance to be a big steal, but I am not sure about Shumpert at 17. In this league, they both are putting up near 20 points per game, but it seems to be completely unstructured and completely in tune with their strengths of youth and athleticism. When they get to the NBA, they will be playing completely different roles, I think their will be little way that either would have a big rookie year.
This "Impact League" is incredibly difficult to gauge. Corey Brewer scored 38 points in a game, Kyle Lowry was putting up monster numbers as well. John Wall clearly has seemed to be the most talented player in the league, which is not a big surprise. Rudy Gay is coming back from injury, but seems to be playing quite well. Austin Daye is putting up darn near 30 per game. But, their was a day where this happened:
- JJ Hickson put up 52 and 10
- Kyle Lowry had 49
- Al Harrington had 46 and 12
- John Wall had 41
- Klay Thompson scored 40 points
That happened in one day! I mean, how do we evaluate these players in this setting? When there are only 7 or so players in a completely unstructured game, where pretty much everyone is shooting well above 50% from the field, how can we interpret these players as better than any of the rookies not playing in this league? I think this league is a great idea and a good way to have these guys working out and staying in shape, but I question whether it is necessarily making them better at things that had Shumpert drafted at 17 and Selby drafted at 49. Certainly, I believe a lot of rookies are probably working really hard as well, and while they do not have highlight vids from this summer, they are still going to be ready to play. All of these guys can ball, and while Selby and Shumpert were both the two most explosive athletes in the combine testing, I think their were quite a few better players. As soon as the season starts, we will see where they stack up.

This event is great for guys that like to showcase their athletic ability, but’s let not forget why these guys fell to where they were drafted. Shumpert had the worst shot selection of any college basketball player last season, and when Selby had to play off-the-ball at KU, he didn’t look nearly like the #1 prospect some people dubbed him as coming out of HS. Both of these guys need the ball in their hands to be effective, and no way they’re gonna get the freedom they want in actual NBA games.
No doubt these guys can become steals, but you can’t just call them steals just because they’re dominating an exhibition league where a lot of vets are playing just because they’re bored.

Bryant24ParticipantI get your point im not saying the going 20ppg scorers as a rookies but they will suprise people when the knicks drafted shumpert they were booing him but whenever the season starts and he gets going he will be good Chauncey Billups said with his talent he can be very good but he said once he start mentoring and he gets a consistent jumper he will be a star.

Bryant24ParticipantYeah I admit shumpert had a poor shot selection at Georgia Tech and he shot a horrendous 28% from the free throw line but he has been working hard this summer I seen a lot of videos of him not just videos of pickup games and he been working hard even added more muscle to already strong frame. Now Josh Selby had a very poor freshman season when many predicted he have a big one but i’m not just saying there steals from the impact league i’m saying it because they been playing very well the whole summer but I know its a bit premature to be calling them steals but its not like i’m far fetched.

First, I thought I double posted… Then I looked again and realized I posted like 10 times. Then I looked again and realize each post had one word of the sentence. Classic sh*t.

iguapops420ParticipantI don’t think Shump is going to be a steal exactly, but sleeper for sure. Selby definitely has potential to be THE steal of the draft if he could manage to get put on the right team. Had he been taken by NYK also and put into a Barbosa circa 07 type role, then perhaps, but I really doubt he ever becomes a legit PG.
As for Shumpert needing the ball in his hands, I actually disagree. His last year at GT he actually played more off ball and he came up with his best season there so far. I’ve said it many tiomes and been disagreed with many times, but I really believe a large portion of his bad shot selection and low percentage was due to the poorly structured offense of GT and having too large of a scoring role on the team. He was after all usually the low hot clock bail out guy for the team.
