When the lottery rolls around next month, how would you most like to see the draft order for the top six or so picks go? Not as a biased fan, hoping your hometown team picks the highest possible, but as an unbiased observer of the NBA. Consider the factors of what would make for the most interesting storylines, each team’s current personnel, and the teams that have a reasonable likelihood to be at the top of the draft. Usually there is a surprise or two.

    Orlando – Parker

    Milwaukee – Wiggins

    Utah – Embiid

    Philadelphia – Randle

    LA Lakers – Exum

    Boston – Smart

Just a little something out the ordinary

i put the lakers , celtics, and 76ers at the top because i think it’s the best interest of the nba to have some more marketable value to the league. ratings are better when the most loved/hated teams are on top. i don’t want to leave out the little guy, but those 3 teams are better for the league when they are competitive.

from a players stand point, i believe the personalities of wiggins, randle, smart, and maybe possibly parker should go to big market teams. if embiid, or exum landed on a smaller market team being as talented as they are, i believe those 2 personalities would more likely stay on a smaller market team like durant did before.

i don’t believe this will be the draft order or where these players would rank, but more of where i would like them to land.

lakers – jabari parker – a story line of wiggins vs parker and celtics vs lakers reborn in the nba.

    celtics – andrew wiggins

76ers – julius randle – all star quality forward brings some slamma jamma box office to a desperate philly squad.

kings – dante exum – sacramento needs a star that will stick around in years to come for fans of sacramento to have something to cheer about after staying in sac-town.

t’wolves – joel embiid – kevin love might be loyal to minnesota if a game changer came to play like this one.

bucks – noah vonleh – i know, i know, a crowded position, but bucks need an all-star potential player that will not leave them once his contract’s up. since they are on a 2 to 3 year plan (by the looks of that pathetic roster) it could make sense in the big picture. the story line however, might look like- wtf!!!

magic – marcus smart – smart brings box office excitement to orlando. he also might stick with orlando. it might be just big enough of a market to stick around and a guy like marcus smart might be intrigued with being the man at least for a while for a team like the magic.

jazz – gary harris – harris pairs up with rival burke.

on a side note, i would like to see the knicks get a young superstar in the near future.

Marcus Smart going to the Magic is interesting. They’d have him next to Oladipo. Would that be redundant? Maybe. But it’d give them two extremely hard-nosed guards. Orlando would be playing hard.

Utah: Jabari Parker: Unoriginal on my part, but it’d still be a great story line.
Philadelphia: Andrew Wiggins: Philadelphia becomes insanely athletic.
Cleveland: Joel Embiid: Cleveland gets another lottery chance to blow, but also a chance at a superstar.
Milwaukee: Dante Exum: Milwaukee gets a second athletic foreigner, and adds to their terrible backcourt.
Orlando: Marcus Smart: I’ve read they really like him, and they need a point guard.
Boston: Julius Randle: Not a perfect fit since they have Sullinger, but Boston gets an asset.
Sacramento: Noah Vonleh: A versatile player who fits decently next to Cousins.
Detroit: Tyler Ennis: Ideally they’d blow up the whole team, then grab a PG to pair with Drummond.
Lakers: Doug McDermott: McDermott can probably be a championship-caliber role player next to a couple FA’s.
Philadelphia: Zach Lavine: Philadelphia becomes even more insanely athletic.
Atlanta: Gary Harris: Atlanta adds to its stable of deadly jump-shooters.
Denver: Kyle Anderson: Another player for Denver’s stable of odd-fitting players.
Minnesota: Rodney Hood: Another shooter to play alongside Rubio.
Phoenix: Aaron Gordon: Gordon gets to continue to develop in AZ, and can be a terror in transition with Dragic.

    1. Boston: Brad Stevens intrigues me. What would he and Ainge do with that pick if they had everyone to choose from?
    2. Milwaukee: They haven’t had one of the top two spots since they drafted Andrew Bogut in 2005.
    3. Philadelphia: I’m really curious what they would do if both Wiggins and Parker were gone.
    4. L.A.: They haven’t picked this high in a LONG time.
    5. Orlando: a quagmire of a spot for a quagmire of a roster.
    6. Utah: Parker is the guy who seems to make so much sense for them, but there’s no chance at him here.

I like both the Sixers and the Pelicans, but I would like to see the Pelicans grab a top 3 pick and try to add another star beside Davis. Having Davis next to Wiggins or Parker would be great. I’d really like for Utah to get a top 3 pick so they could take Parker.

    1. Jazz – Gets to select their hero in Parker

    2. Pelicans – Wiggins would be great next to Davis

    3. Sixers – All that taking wasn’t for nothing because they still moved ahead of the Bucks to select Embiid

    4. Bucks – Poor Bucks "won" the tank race only to end up with the #4 pick and the rest are in order of worst record

    5. Magic

    6. Celtics and so on.

As a Phoenix fan and a so a neutral, my draft order after the lottery based on current standings would be:-

    1. Bucks – small market team desperately needs a face of a franchise.

    2. Detroit – the last time Dumars picked second we all know what happens, the team needs an SF so can take one of two options here depending who goes first or not.

    3. Philly – as they have made their tanking a bit too obvious, I’ve dropped them down a place but they still get a very good pick.

Boston will get a good pick anyway and if Rondo returns sound they can build around him. The Lakers deprive a smaller market team if they get lucky. I considered the Kings but they have a more settled future now. Orlando got a top 2 pick last year and have future picks due. Utah have a raft of highly drafted players already.

My other fun one would be Denver via NY and make the Knicks think really carefully about trading picks away having lost out on Aldridge, Noah and George in the last 8 years.

     In imaginary draft net world

    1. Milwuakee-Joel Embiid-They’d just put Larry Sanders or Ersan Ilyasova on the trade block, or keep them all and play them in a Twin Tower line up show how, Ersan can play SF, Giannis plays the SG in this gigantic lineup.

    2. Boston-Andrew Wiggins-The Celtics leap frog the 76ers and Magic to snag the standout G/F, than the Celtics likely try to sign Gordon Hayward and put Green and Bass on the Block, maybe a Green for Sanders swap?

    3. Philadelphia-Jabarri Parker-Instant Offense and Ticket Sales, not to mention the perfect scorer to pair with MCW and Noel this high in the draft. Although we don’t “win” the lottery, we do get a great prospect.

    4. Orlando-Marcus Smart-seems like this is the perfect fit for Smart, the Magic would clearly allow him to play PG off Olapido and the thought of that duo defended Guards has to be tempting to the GM and Coach

    2) Utah: Parker, can help Hayward on offence and potentially be the offensive focal point for young team and would get to play with a defensive big that protects the rim.

    3) Boston: Embiid, becomes the rim protector the Celtics need beside players like Sully and Olynyk.

    4) Philadelphia: Randle, big bruising offensive talent next to the defensive pogo stick that is Nerlens Noel.

    5) Orlando: Smart, not many teams need a point guard for the future like the Magic do. Godd defensive backcourt of Smart and Oladipo. Both are good passers, but neither are pure points.

    6) Sacramento: Exum, can be either a shooting guard beside Thomas or a point guard beside McLemore. Good pick for potential.

    7) Lakers: Vonleh, pick with high potential. Position doesn’t matter for this team, but potential is a need for a lack luster laker team.

    8) Cleveland: Anderson, a do it all small forward with low maintenance. Just what this team needs as Deng ain’t staying.

    9) Charlotte (via Detroit): McDermott, Bobcats usually choose high regarded college players, and this one actually fits. He can be a shooter at the 3 (which MKG can’t be) and reap the benefits of playing with Big Al (see Hayward’s stats from last year). Plus I didn’t want Detroit to get this pick as I feel they don’t deserve it.

    10) Philadelphia (via New Orleans): Lavine, another huge potential pick for the Sixers. You’d have a backcourt of two 6’6 guards with passing abilities. Add to this a front court of Thad Young, Randle, and Noel, you could have a fairly decent team in a year or two.

    11) Denver: Harris, Nuggets are weak at the two and they need more players who play both sides of the ball.

    12) Orlando (via Knicks): Gordon, he drops in the draft (I kind of forgot about him when making my list and then I couldn’t fit him in to make all the other teams have perfect fits). Another good young potential player for Orlando.

    13) Minnesota: Warren, small forward is their weakest position and adding a guy who can be a good 3 and D kind of guy would be a great pick here to help them make the playoffs next year.

For some reason those picks didn’t copy and paste over.

      1) Milwaukee: Wiggins, could have the long and athletic lineup of Knight, Giannis, Wiggins, Henson, and Sanders.

      14) Memphis: Hood, adds a shooter at the 3 spot.

I’d like to see OKC win the lottery, because fuck everybody, Embiid and Ibaka would be sweet.

In the realm of plausibility, however, here are my picks.

1- Boston – Embiid. Rondo would help him pad his stats and confidence, and get him some good looks in a nice two-man game, and in the meantime as Embiid develops they’d have time for another top lottery dude in 2015. Also, historic franchise yadda yadda.

2- LA – Parker. Parker as the succesor to Kobe would be a nice storyline, and renew the Celts – Lakers rivalry. Also, I dislike the Lakers, and believe that Parker will slightly underperform his draft slot.

3- Milwaukee – Wiggins. Just BPA for the Bucks, and he and Giannis would be a fun watch, with Henson and Sanders locking down the paint. With some shooting that could become a great team.

4- Philly – Marcus Smart. I like the storyline of the super-tanking Sixers getting some karmic retribution for their assault on good basketball, also, if they figured each other out, MCW and Smart could be a deadly, insanely fun backcourt.

5- Orlando – Exum. They need a PG, Smart is off the board… It’s a match! If Exum fulfills that potential, something about Orlando makes it seem like the most fun place for it to be realized, "Hey Miami and Boston and Chicago, remember that Orlando team? THEY’RE COMING FOR YOU, AND THEY’RE YOUNGER AND FASTER THAN YOU!"

6- Sacramento – Aaron Gordon. Would compliment Boogie PERFECTLY, slow, methodical offense next to fast, frenetic defense. Also seems like his character, allegedly quite good, would be a help organizationally.

7-  Utah – Gary Harris. Forgot about them, that’s why they’re this low. I know that lottery mechanics probably wouldn’t allow this scenario. But I don’t think they’ll mind once they realize that in Gary Harris they have a great player and backcourt mate for Trey Burke, aside from the college rivalry. He’ll be able to shoot, straight-line to the rim effectively, defend well, and fill in some gaps with his rounded skillset.

8 – Cleveland – Vonleh. It was either him or Randle. Cleveland needs good defensive players who can stretch the floor and get a bucket here and there (don’t we all?) and Vonleh fits that mold better than Randle. Tristan Thompson is good, but not a franchise PF like Vonleh will probably be, and does have himself a little trade value. A great storyline would be "How is Cleveland gonna fuck up the Vonleh-Thompson problem?"

9 – Charlotte via Detroit – Randle. Terrible fit, but he’s by far the BPA here. Look for this one to get traded.

10 – Denver – McDermott. He actually fits OK there next to their athletic wings who will be able to cover him defensively. Just a really good scorer and shooter. Don’t feel great about him, but something about him just fits with Denver.

11 – Minny – Mario Hezonja. I know he probably won’t come out, but the key word is ideal. He’s got great size, athleticism, shooting ability, shot creation, and defensive tools. Shooting and defense are two things the twolves are desperatee for. I think if he were in college this year he’d have put up a 20 and 5 line with solid percentages. Then the storyline surfaces "Will Mario Hezonja come over in time to show Kevin Love that Minny is worth staying in?"

12 – Philly via New Orleans – Hood. Next to two guys who need the ball and don’t shoot well, a quiet guy who doesn’t need the ball and shoots well seems like a good choice. He’ll get a LOT of open threes from Smart and MCW in this scenario.

13 – Atlanta – Willy Cauley-Stein. Compliments both Millsap and Al Horford with an opposite skillset. Blocks will send Teague (insanely fast) and Korver (trailing shooter) out on devestating fast breaks.

14 – Memphis – James Young. Shooting! His stroke is pure and he makes some big shots. He will drastically improve on his shooting numbers as a frosh. He also could develop into a versatile, smooth scorer and defender, with good length and quickness.

Note that these picks are the ones I would enjoy the most, not my big board.
