I dont know how many of you guys follow hip hop or actually know what it is (most people dont) but what do you consider hip hop? have you guys listened to jay electronica or j. cole, or nujabes? and what is your perception of hip hop? it seems a lot of people’s perception has been skewed because, quite frankly, the stuff you hear nowadays thats considered to be hip hop is far from that. hip hop was originally emcees telling stories of their lives, whether it considered of speaking of doing dirt on the streets, selling crack, cocaine etc. and lastly, what do you think the difference is between hip hop and rap? sorry to make it sound like an essay question lol

    Soulja Boy = Rap

    Lupe Fiasco = Hip-Hop

There aren’t too many true hip-hop artists left in my opinion. There are just a bunch of artists that have dumbed down their lyrics to be more mainstream and get their songs played in the club/on the radio… Trying to make more money.

unfortuantely its not… you cant stray off topic so far and then think its still called hip hop. its like if basketball "evolved" to the point where it was played without dribbling, and then you were given elbow pads, knee pads, a helmet etc and then say its "evolved" and still basketball. to the ignorant person, it may still be called basketball but in reality its not.

hip hop are artists like ashanti, mary j blige, usher…rappers like lil wayne, kanye or jay z..but both genres are starting to merge and working together so often…

i’m just a little happy..that there arent many gangster rapper spewing that crap to little kids..i’m not going to lie..i love listening to gangster rap…but no matter what parents do or say kids will hear it somewhere….

i mean you can hear little 5 year old girls singing rihanna’s song ”come here rudeboy” can you get it up? are you big enuff”? and they have no idea what they’re saying..

or little 8 year old boys talking about getting their mack-10 and busting a cap in someone….

great point indiana basketball… i remember a couple years ago on 106 & park they asked soulja boy what it felt like to be the "new face of hip-hop" which goes to show that the perception of what it actually is is so off its not even funny. people watch and believe what they see on tv no matter how dumb it is and just ride along with it to afraid to form their own opinions which leads to most of the new guys we hear today

Is Lil Wayne really hip-hop? The dude can’t stay on subject for one bar. All he does is say a bunch of punch lines repeatedly.

And Jay-Z dumbed down to double his dollars a long time ago. I guess he’s still hip-hop, but he’s watered down…

And Kanye… I don’t know what he is… He’d might as well be pop.

I don’t have a problem with any of it though.

rap and r&b are kind of merging. you have guys like drake rapping and then trey songz doing the hook so yes kind of. but then again the hooks that are done on those kinds of songs arent true r&b songs. lil wayne is awful (bring the negatives if you like) i could stand him before he got strung out on all the stuff hes strung out on. i think hes always been rap, every so often he’d kind of venture into hip hop (hustla muzik, receipt etc) but hes always been mostly rap. i consider rap to be money, hoes clothes and for the last like 5-6 years thats all lil wayne has rapped about. i used to be a huge jay z fan but hes trying too hard to stay relevant and its really rubbed me the wrong way

I think the creativity is starting to dwindle. Everything is basically being recycled and just done in slightly different ways. Even beats.

It seems like everybody is talking about drinking (especially Trey Songz and T-Pain), stealing your girl (Trey Songz), hoes, cars, drugs (Jeezy) and clothes… It’s getting old. That’s why I like Lupe Fiasco. He’s creative, while having good lyrics and production.

And a lot of songs are just about the beats and hooks.

the comment about creativity is on point… the hooks are whats important to everyone so now everyone makes a hook thats catchy and easy to remember and thats what sells. most all music is party music now and all everyone talks about is drinking and smoking… a perfect example would be that lil jon song where the hook is literally:

    "SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS!!!"

    how creative right?

    Wiz Khalifa

    Lupe

    Kanye

    Kid Cudi (old stuff)

    Young Jeezy

    Gucci Mane

    Jody Breeze

This is what i mainly listen to. I have no idea what you wanna put under what catergory. Im more concerned with the music being quality and stuff i want to listen to more than if the subject is hitting something important or what genre its under.

I always state that I am eclectic, but my favorite genre is hip hop. But, the lines are truly blurred, with almost any emcee. Truly, hip hop is a culture with the pillars being eMCing (rapping), DJing (beats), break dancing and graffiti. These are the four elements, of which get categorized by many into Rap music. The difference? Really, it is all how you see it. I see hip hop as being slightly more conscious, maybe even being more insightful and introspective about life experiences. But, their are some MC’s who definitely make "rap" tracks and vice versa. When I think of Hip Hop, I find KRS-One to be an ambassador, though I know many find him to preachy and almost abrasive towards what he does and does not consider hip hop. But, I find I agree with a lot of what he says regarding hip hop, and I feel he really breaks down the difference quite well.

My advice is, you know what you like, you know what you do not, so just categorize it as that. People will like a lot of different music, and more than likely, there are some hip hop artists or songs you do not dig, and there might be a tune by a rapper you like. I think ultimately rap tends to play to the pop charts, it tends to go over the same thing and maybe talks about topics or have structure that you (and I) might find ridiculous or banal. Well, it will keep being made, and a lot of people will keep liking it, to dance too or just because they like the hook or beat or a dirty word that is said. Hip hop is in some ways a mind state and involves a lot of things, but tight lyricism and beats usually gain or acclaim and is what those of us who are into hip hop seek. A great flow, excellent production and mindful lyrics filled with metaphor, similes and punchlines tend to be the norm for followers of hip hop, as well as in many cases lyrics involving issues and street life. Either way, it gets really old when you just rip on someone’s taste of music rather than explaining to them why you choose yours. Be more of a teacher than a preacher, and just because you do not like it, it does not mean that you are hating. But, there is no need to harp on it, if someone likes rap more than hip hop, that is really there choice, and in the end I feel you will probably find more rap fans than hip hop fans.

    To sum it all up,

Hip Hop is dying because of fake artists on the scene now and the stupid people (most of who are followers and can’t tell real music from fake music and can’t make decisions for themselves) love off these so called music artists and just these artists because all the cool kids like them. What is "Taylor Gang or Die"? Promoting kids to smoke weed and making it seem like it’s cool. It’s just this whole mainstream ordeal and artists are forced to rap/sing about things.

i try not to put down what people call ‘new’ hip hop but i feel its a mockery of what it was supposed to be. there are definitely more rap fans than hip hop fans because rap songs consist of topics that are easier to comprehend such as the glitz and glamor of being an artist making money whereas hip hop consists of topics that require (in some cases) for you to engage your mind in the lyrics and appreciate the rhyme schemes/rhythmical patterns involved in creating the track and most people dont want to pay that much attention which is fine, i just dont like it when people categorize things into the wrong category, and then argue a point that is very much invalid based solely on the popular opinion people have formulated especially with the new age guys

People need to take a look at "freestyling ability". The artist or person who is doing it are the only people who know whether they are freestyling or not, but it takes work and time, or in the cases of some, incredible talent to be a freestyle artist. There are many different types of freestyle, but one thing I do not get is reading lyrics off of your blackberry and calling it a freestyle. Drake and Wiz Khalifa have both done this, and while I know they have a ton of fans, I think even their fans know that when you are reading off of a teleprompter, it is not coming up with something on the spot.

yeah… freestyling has definitely been misunderstood. people have claimed to freestyle when its obvious they havent. jay z said he never wrote anything and although i like jay z’s older stuff, i dont believe it for a second. lil wayne said in A Millie:

"…. from the tablet in mind mind cuz i dont write sh!t cuz i aint got time"

    please…

i think eminem is one of the few rappers that can do EVERYTHING well. he can freestyle, battle rap all of the different aspects as good as ive ever seen.

As i expected, me putting Khalifa in there lead to a "Black and Yellow" discussion, which isnt even one of his 100 best songs. But hey, thats what get when you get people who dont know what they are talking about.

And yes, he talks about smoking weed. But where all these deep lyrics that you all are talking about?

Eminem still trying to make us thinks his life blows because he had a daughter in a crappy relationship and was addicted to vicodin ? you are still makings MILLIONS of dollars. yes, eminem, your life does suck.

The last time rap had lyrics that meant something was the mid 90s when dudes were actually getting killed because of rap songs and rivalries. Dont give me this "All he raps about is smoking weed and women" because there is not one "hip hop" or "rap" artist out there right now that raps about anything relevant.

sorry urbanovreeverything that talking about wiz khalifas insufficiencies as a hip hop artist and lack of substance in his lyrics has touched a soft spot. he is no good. and dont ever compare wiz khalifa to eminem ever please. it makes me want to discredit anything you have to say on this topic. i appreciate your determination to say what you please regardless of what everyone else is saying but come on man. and if you listen to what eminem raps about now, its not about his daughter or a crappy life anymore. its about how hes realized the importance he has to rap and hip hop and how hes embraced that, plans to be as good a father as he can be and rap his ass off until he cant anymore. so please do some homework before you go into a fight blindly

He is very versatile, and his battle rhyming is awesome. Plus, he kills freestyle competitions, but I honestly believe his life is making lyrics and doing things of this sort. I used to think he was a prolific writer, which he is, along with many other skilled writers who help make him Eminem. I think a lot of these guys have teams. Jay-Z is a person I think is incredibly talented at making songs, and I do feel most of what he says is true about not writing things down. But, the guy is an incredible visual thinker, and must say things over and over again to himself. Biggie much in the same way. These guys are good at what they do, and are taught and come up with methods. Practice is something you have to do to become great at anything, and these guys do it constantly or they do not stay where they are.

LOL, whats hilarious is how you stated a bunch of stuff as if it was FACT. Music, unlike sports is almost totally opinion. Its what appeals to you. maybe you should have done your homework on that. a FACT would be:

Eminem is a much more successful artist than Wiz Khalifa.

This is unarguable. You are trying to argue arguable points as facts. Freestyling and sound depth are not facts. I dont like Eminem as a rapper. Does that mean he isnt good? ofcourse not, the general public has seen him as one of, if not the most successful hip hop artists of alltime. I just dont like it. If you do, thats fine. I dont rip on who you like, because thats your entitlement. Music is all about what you like, not whats better than what.

Michael Jackson was BY FAR the most successful musician of the past 30 years. Does that mean he is my favorite artist? No, definitely not. Can i admit he was great at what he did? yes i can. Its just not for me. Dont hate on other peoples tastes. Im not a fly by night Wiz fan that heard black and yellow on the radio and started listening to stuff. I have been listening to this guy for 3 years now and have heard all of his mixtapes. I like it. If you dont, more power to you.

Actually, i brought up Khalifa, saying, like the artists i enjoy that really genre isnt important, if its what you like. Whats left of hip hop? a couple of has beens and a few young kids with potential who will probably mess it up when they get big anyway. Dont try to make music into something its not. The days of Biggie and Pac are long over. The hip hop industry is what it is. If it has morphed into rap, so be it.

And another fallacy in this argument is "claiming to be hip hop" Who claims to be hip hop? because they go out there, spit, and get famous? I dont see any direct quotes from any of the forementioned "fakers" Khalifa, Drake (whom i hate, but is still good at what he does), and the others where they are saying "Im hip hop".

Hip Hop and Rap arent the same: FACT

Hip Hop is better than rap: FICTION

Its all tastes. Like all music. Im sure someone on this website listens to Metallica and Iron Maiden before they go to bed. And i have no problem with that.

wiz khalifa isnt as bad as drake in the sense of claiming to be hip hop… drake however claims to be everything and be the sh!t at it. i cant stand drake either. i guess its more of the fans of guys like wiz khalifa that call him hip hop and he just rides it out because his fans say it and it keeps them happy. my opinions are solely based from a hip hop point of view so when i say he sucks its from the hip hop point of view. as far as rap is concerned hes great, although i think rap is an industry where its a little easier to be successful because you just have to come up with some catchy bar and hooks to make it. whereas hip hop fanatics such as myself are very opinionated on what is good and what isnt so its harder to make it as a hip hop artist.

I was, and still am, highly sceptical. But, one of his mixtapes was hosted by DJ Premier, who you can see in one of those videos he did for his "Freestyles". Say whatever you want about whether they are truly freestyles, he seems to be getting a huge following, and anything Premier touches, I have to at least take some notice. To me, Premo is all that is hip hop and my favorite producer bar none, and even if this kid paid him mega bucks to make a mix tape, he or his record company obviously know what they are doing. I think he is being marketed very well, in not only gaining pop ability (which is easy seeing that he was on MTV since he was a little kid), but getting, what I will call great personnel around him as well. Of course his dad helped, whether it was directly or indirectly, and who knows if he has a ghost writer, in many ways who cares. One thing is, they talk about how he has become more famous than his older brother, who also wanted to be an MC. Well, let me put it this way, Diggy is lucky he looks like his mom. No way teen girls are going to be all over his older brother they way they will be all over this kid. I mean, he is not blessing these tracks as they were blessed originally, but he has links to hip hop royalty and I would not doubt that he will become a lot more successful. Plus, Premo’s sample on that "Digg is Like" thing over the "Nas is Like" beat, "and I’m the diggy, diggy", Premier is ill.

Who cares about what the difference between Rap and Hip-Hop are?  To me, it is much more important how good the artist is than what genre they are considered.  Wiz is nice simply because there really isn’t anyone else.  Maybe if The Game would ever drop the R.E.D. album that would change lol

Strange Music label in general needs better recognition.  Brotha Lynch has been a monster for quite sometime.

…with the general consensus on here, in that about 95% of this bull you hear on the radio or tv that they call hip hop/rap whatever…is indeed trash…guys do have a point, the rap game is evolving just like basketball is, the artists are making these bubble gum, dumbed down pop songs with catchy hooks cuz it appeals to crowd that will go out and uy their album/merchandise/etc (teenage kids)….im only 22 yrs old but as a true hip hop head whos passionate about the craft, it does hurt my heart to see the genre as a whole get publicly p!ssed on…i still grew up on the 90s classics….pac, biggie, big L, bone thugz, ugk, outkast, nas, the lox, capone n noreaga etc…i could go on for days..but whatever, real hip hop shines underground cuz its darkest there! real heads know what it is…there are still great artists out there doin their thing….some that still write meaningful bars with substance= joe budden, jadakiss, immortal technique, z-ro, atmosphere, devin the dude…sh*t im ramblin but i could go on for days! im real reluctant to hear any of these new cats that people rave about but i will say i do like j.cole, big k.r.i.t., curren$y (not really new but just now gettin his well deserved shine), and jay electronica…LONG LIVE HIP HOP
