redsoxfreak724ParticipantI follow the draft process very closely and have over the years and can’t quite get my head around the Jaren Jackson Jr. hype. I have just now rewatched his tape and have read several scouting reports from different services and can’t quite get my head around why he is considered by some to be a top 3 prospect.
To be clear I do see him as a high level, all around solid, and surefire top 10 prospect. I just don’t see what he appears to be great at. If someone could help me understand what about his game/potential has them thinking he should go ahead of guys with ELITE traits (i.e. Ayton’s size/strength, Bagley’s offensive rebounding/scoring, Bamba’s length, Doncic’s vision/feel, Young’s shot, Sexton’s quickness, Porter’s three level scoring/maturity) I would greatly appreciate it!

weballin.netParticipantof skills for someone his size and his age. He’s strong, athletic, has a 7-4 wingspan which makes him a very good shot blocker.
He’s also skilled offensively as he shot 40% from three with 96 attempts but can also finish emphatically inside with both hands and handle the ball pretty well for a big.
For me, what he lacks now is just consistency and toughness, wich means being able to play 150% every night. That may explain is underwhelming rebounding as he had only one game with more than 8 rebounds after 12/9 and 12 games with 5 rebounds or less during the stretch.

220ParticipantThe Jaren Jackson Jr. hype reminds me somewhat of the hype around Marvin Williams when he came out of UNC. Williams did some things well, but he wasn’t the best player on his team and he wasn’t great at anything. He was taken over Chris Paul and Deron Williams and his best simply never compared to their bests. I realize Jackson is a different player, but I get the same feeling watching him.

weballin.netParticipantto Williams.
Marvin Williams was a classic tweener, not long or strong enough to play the four and lacking the skills and footspeed to play the three.
Jackson is taller, longer, a far better shooter with the ability to finish inside with an array of moves.

220ParticipantI’m not trying to compare their games. I’m trying to compare the hype around them as they entered the draft. I’m not high on Jackson and his hype reminds me of the hype surrounding Williams as he entered the draft.

SpartanGloryParticipantHe was the best shot blocker in America and shot 40% from 3 with a developing ability to attack close outs, as well as the ability to finish with either hand. How did you watch the tape and do research and not realize that those are some of the most valuable attributes for modern big men? He may not seem to have the sky high ceiling of Bagley or Ayton, but he projects as a two-way game changer, and borderline all star.
That Marvin Williams talk is a joke…

kobyzParticipantis the new age center, can switch on defense, block shots, finish inside, hit threes and he’s also the youngest player in the draft! has some Al Horford in his game, some Alonzo Mourning…

Memphis MadnessParticipantI just posted the Marvin Williams comparison on another board.
I think he can be a high level role player. A mix of John Salley and Robert Horry with Joe Smith-esque points/rebounds/blocks numbers. His funky 3 point shot looks more like Rodman’s than Ray Allen’s.
I think he is a classic 4th guy IF you already have a unicorn superstar guard AND a unicorn superstar big man ALONG WITH a prototype 3rd option scorer on the wing. Not really a guy you build around.

KIP BallerParticipantI agree with the original post. I have watched him a couple times and have seen a number of his highlights and I always leave un-impressed. I see a young player that has a lot of size and skill who hasnt been able to put it all together yet. Maybe he does and becomes a future all-star. Or maybe he doesnt and becomes a veratile role player/starter. What blows my mind is that some people have him in the top 3 over Bagley, who to me is a sure thing all-star level player. I can see someone taking a risk on Jackson over guys like Bamba (offensive limitations), Porter (injury history), or Young (size/athleticism limitations), but to consider taking Jackson over one of the top 3 guys (Ayton, Doncic, Bagley) would be a terrible gamble for a rebuilding team. I personally have him falling to Chicago at 7.

The GoatParticipantI have him going to New York. Hes a relatively safe pick, big guy can block shots and shoot the ball. The combine measurements were interesting – he has 10 inch hands, they must look like baseball gloves. He could be anything from Kwame Brown with a jumper, to Marvin Williams to Vin Baker with more range. At worst he will have 10 year career as a back up big and at best he’s an All Star multiple times. Late lotto.
