so it seems hayward is gonna sign with boston, and although boston is sure a good option i think he’s making a mistake, and i’d like to argue why..

i think boston is not the best option for him because boston’s core and hayward are not in the same momentum of time, as boston’s real core is around 20yo (tatum+brown+next years picks) and he’s 27.

i think this boston team is not ready to compete for the title, even with hayward;  sure they could get 55+ wins, specially in that super weak conference, but i’m not sure they can even challenge the cavs to get to the finals, much less the warriors.. boston’s perimeter defenders are good, but their overall defense it’s not good at all, in fact they rank 13th, and with that kind of defense you go nowhere.. plus now boston will probably have to get rid of their best defender in bradley so i doubt they improve those numbers..

i think hayward should have stayed in utah as looking at their collective numbers i think they could have been a top4 team in the west conference next year, and they had the tools, style and collective numbers to challenge the warriors, may be not right away but in 3 years when that super team splits because of salaries and also may be their motivation falls..

in order to win a championship you need yes or yes, to be a top 3 defensive team; you might have the best offense in the league or have a lot of stars but if you don’t meet that requirement you won’t win, specially against this warrior team.

utah was a top 3 defensive team in the league last year plus they have, in my opinion, the most impactful player on defense in the league in gobert, so they meet that indispensable requirement to win. they also play at a slow pace and have in gobert not only a defensive force but an offensive force that can hurt big time the warriors in a slow pace..

utah also was top 5 in the league in "SRS" which is another crucial collective number to win, in fact if a team is not top7 in that section, the chances of winning decrease a lot.

so utah only needed to improve a little bit their offense as they ranked 12th last year which is not great but not that bad, in fact improving just a little enough to get into the top 10 could make them a final conference candidate.. they already grabbed mitchell in the draft and with one more piece added it could have been enough..

with the collective numbers utah would have with hayward, i believe they would be a better team than houston, OKC, NO, denver, minnesota, clippers, memphis and they could be right there close to san antonio..

so in conclusion, even though boston is a nice place to be, i believe utah was the better option for him due to the lack of correlation in time with boston’s real core and with the lack of chances to win a title with this boston team in the present and near future, and in the other hand because of the potential utah would have with him, and because i believe that with those team numbers and a couple of pieces added they could become a contender in 3 year..

It doesn’t move the needle for me concerning the Celtics. Just takes minutes away from a developing Bradley, Tatum and Brown. They would have the same amount of wins with or without Hayward.

they have a log jam @ 3 with Hayward, Brown and Tatum.  Eventually I think Tatum can grow into a stretch 4, at least part time, but it feels like Philadelphia when they created a log jam of centers and guys who should get minutes have trouble getting on the floor.  I guess Boston could just play a positionless style and get them all on the court at the same time with Brown as a 2 and Tatum a 4 . That’ll work at least against some teams as those guys can switch fairly easy being around the same size

To me Boston is just weird at this point, their main problems in the playoffs were Thomas’s defense, rim protection, and rebounding. So they go ahead and get Tatum and Hayward. That achieves very little apart from the fact that when you take Thomas out you have other guys who can create their own shots.

exactly, boston is a "weird" team like you say; in one hand they have a group of players and a style of play good enough to finish 1st in the eastern conference and to get to the CF, but in the other hand those same pieces and that style is what prevents the team to be a real contender..

in one hand they have "veterans" like IT and horford whom give a lot to the team but at the same time they take away much more than they give you, because they are the main reason from preventing you to be a contender..having IT is a real problem for their defense when playoffs come and horford can’t protect the rim and can’t guard quicker players..as a result, boston’s overall defense is mediocre and with that type of defense you can’t win..now add that bradley, their best defender, is probably gone and crowder may be too.

and in the other hand they have a very good core of young players but they are too young to help you win a championship in the next 3-5 years which is the window of the veterans they have..

so you have a "weird" team that has a mediocre defense and is gonna play small…i don’t think that’s a good mix at all…

boston might have an even bigger problem, because their next years picks might not be as good as they thought..as a result of all the trades we’ve seen, many team in the eastern conference are gonna be really bad, so brooklyn’s pick might not be that good, add to that, that brooklyn doesn’t have to tank like those other teams and that pick may fall a lot..same happens with lakers pick, as it has to be between 2-5 in order to go to boston and with all the mediocre teams there will be next year, they might end up without that pick..

I’ve never saying for over a year he was coming. The celtics added Horford and brown last year. This year ta Gordon and Tatum. Next year they will let IT walk and sign another max the 2  possible top 5 picks. Gordon’s knows Lebron is going to the Lakers he is wife’s wants out of Cleveland and he hasn’t recruited and billups turned down the job. The celtics walk to the NBA finals once he’s gone and might get there next year. Brad Stevens wants to run IT Horford and 3 SF. Brown Gordon Heyward Crowder Smart can all play a min of two some 3 positions. Stevens wants to play positionless basketball.

     I disagree.

First of all, Boston’s "real core" (Tatum, Brown, future picks) is 5-7 years away from being a contending team if they ever are. Teams led by 22-year-olds don’t go far. Second of all, right now Hayward is so much better at basketball than Brown or Tatum, it’s a joke. It’s not even remotely close. Will Brown and Tatum ultimately have better careers than Hayward? Quite possibly. But even if Brown and Tatum were already all-stars, which they’re not anywhere near, they’d still be all-stars with six or seven less years of NBA knowledge and experience than Hayward.

Boston wants to win a title in the next couple of years. Winning titles is the point of being a franchise in the NBA, and when you’re close to winning one, you don’t blow shit up because you might have a better chance of winning one five years from now.

The idea that no one can possibly get past the Cavs or Warriors right now, so they shouldn’t even try, is ridiculous. When you are a conference finalist, that means you’re close to a title. When you’re a conference finalist you do everything in your power to remain one for the next few years, while improving incrementally both through roster additions and just growing together as a team.

If you can hang at that level for four or five seasons, there’s a good chance that one of those years the breaks will go your way and you will win it all. That’s how it happens for lots of teams. Danny Ainge knows this and that’s what he’s trying to do.

i’m not saying no one can beat the cavs..as for the warriors surely it’s almost impossible at least for the next 2 years, but of course it could happen..

what i’m saying is that boston can’t win the championship with that team..especially as it seems they’re trying to play small and positionless like the warriors, but you can’t beat the warriors with their own tools..

if you wanna have a chance to beat the warriors, i think the only way to do it it’s the "spurs way", that is, slowing the pace down a lot, being the best defensive team in the league (or at least top3) and being good enough in offense..

When you can lure a talented player like Hayward to Boston it’s win, win. The Celtics have a tough time getting above talented players to play there. That said Avery Bradley is on his walk year meaning that Jaylen Brown is your future two guard. he can play either wing spot so he’ll get his minutes. Jayson Tatum will be brought along slowly so there won’t be much pressure for him. By the time Hayward’s contract is up he’ll be ready to assume that postion. Hayward and this current Celtic squad, it’s the perfect bridge team to when Brown, Tatum and next years Nets pick take over. Also you can never have enough trade ammo either. Ainge loves to have trade pieces. Who knows maybe Brown and Tatum will be dealt one day for lets say Anthony Davis. Lastly Brad Stevens plays positionless basketball all his wings are extremely versatile.

for the Celtics. Hayward is a really nice piece & the East is weaker than ever w/ the Western exodus of Butler, PG13 & Milsap

Such a shame for Utah. They’ve done a very measured Rebuild since the 2010 Draft & they finally broke through last year into the playoffs

And it looked like they were just going to get better & better in a brutally harsh Western Conference.

But if Any team has a chance to sign a Top 30 player who is an All Star, you Must do it so I like the pick up for the Celtics.

I think they should offer 2018 and 19 Celtics 1st and 2nd round picks, Jaylen Brown, 19 Clippers pick, and 19 Kings pick to Utah for Rudy Gobert. This would fix all of their defensive problems and give Tatum more playing time

IMO they need shot blocking and rebounding . Maybe zizic can fill that role. I think they need another scorer too. Maybe Brown or Tatum develops into that guy

Reasons it was the right move:

Hayward wouldn’t have made the West Allstar team-which could have effected his earnings

The west is now so loaded I don’t know where Utah would even finish in the standings and could have been either a 1st or 2nd round out at best..

He tried to sign an offer sheet(with bobcats) last free agency which showed already he wanted out..

He gets to play with the coach he trusts/Has a strong relationship with.

Jazz were probably losing Hill and down grading to Rubio(no offense)

    Vs

He went East so he can make the Allstar team

He is going to a top 3 team in the east vs a lower team which had less likely hood of making the playoffs

The team he is going to is deeper at every position than the Jazz except maybe Center(I see AL as a PF)

He gets to play for his friend/Coach who has a very deep play book

They have a young core which could start entering their prime while he is still has couple years of  his prime left..

The Celtics have an easier road to the ECF at least there is also a chance at the final vs Jazz to the WCF and would have most likely been the clippers all over again(Talented but just didn’t have enough to get over the hump)

This is without even mentioning that Lebron will start decling soon or looking for another team soon…

The other main reason is he didn’t make the ALL NBA TEAM so it kind of put the jazz on the same position as Celtics $ wise so there was that also..

He went with the move that gives him the greater chance of at least making a confernce finals and the deeper team so it makes complete sense..Does it suck Utah lost their star player-yes just ask us OKC fans what its like to lose your star player  for nothing we know your pain, does it suck that the Jazz were just turning the corner then this happened yes but the reality is this just like it was when we lost K.D,It was their choice the earned that right after 7+ years with a team does it suck that another super team is getting formed yes no doubt as its bad for the league as it becomes to top heavy, but I think players will relize when the CAP keeps going down due to less playoff games= less revenue to share players will start to get the point and their max dollars will start to decrease..Having only themselves to blame..

Hayward is a quality player and gives Boston another All Star plus he is only 27 so isn’t at his peak yet and he fits in nicely with Ish and Horford. Boston having let Kelly O walk and with Amir trusting the process will have a frontcourt gap even though they have brought Zizic over. So they will likely go smallball sometimes next season to get Brown or Tatum on court with Hayward.
