I never got to see him play in college. Can someone describe what kind of player he was and whether or not he was a franchise type player. Based off the clips his game kinda reminded me of what I saw of Bernard King on Espn Classic. Thanx in advance

I remember watching the game when he died…That was horrible..I also remember when he dropped 42 points & 18 rebounds against LSU when Shaq was a freshman……

    But i don’t think Gathers was a franchise type player…But he could’ve been an all star….A 3rd or 4th option on a team…

Tobias Harris of Tennessee reminds me of Gathers…

Scouts had Gathers as a late 1st or early 2nd round pick..He was 6’7 ,thats undersized for a power forward..He had a great upper body, was a great rebounder, was very competitive, ran the floor well and was very athletic…

I see alot of those same traits in Tobias Harris game…

Len Bias was an athletic 6’10 PF. He was like the Amare Stoudamire of their time.

Amare is a Midlevel mans Bias

Bias could jump dribble and hit threes while being a very good defender. He banged on people on a level sligthly higher then Blake Griffin. He would go off vert and dunk on people backwards

Yeah. At the time in college he was. Imagine Amare with more bounce, handles to potentially play SF. Very good defender, Man body, aggressive like Blake. and yet he was Still pretty raw

I thought Bias was kinda like Josh Smith but more polished offensively.

Again, I’m 17, never seen him play live, only tapes of him in college (pops lived in NC back then, always taped games) and I thought he was like a 6-9, explosive dude who could play 3 and 4?

Gathers played nothing at all like Dominique…Even though Hank lead the nation in both rebounding & scoring, scouts felt he wouldnt be successful at the next level….They felt teammate Bo Kimble was the better pro prospect…..

Bias had some holes in his game, plus he was a poor outside shooter ..But after he was cut from the Olympics try-outs in 1984, he started to improve his game..Bias reminds me of Blake Griffin,Blake’s game isnt as polished as it will be..But he’s an amazing athlete and overpowers people….

lol…Youtube can fool you into thinking someone is better than they really are..Becuz Youtube showcases a player’s highlight….

Bias played more like Dominique ..But there are so many teens on here that have never seen Dominique Wilkens play..So i was comparing Bias to someone like Blake from today’s game that have crazy hops and attacks the basket like Bias…..

my man,my father has games of bias on video tape, len was the first player that i know,he showed that tapes to me when i wqas like 3-4…so i know what was bias like…if he played like griffin why did they comparing to mj,only similar thing to those 2 are just like you said hops and atacking the basket, but trust me len was more then that…he was virtually unguardable,he had great jumpshot, was a solid passer even better then solid(alot of people doesnt know this),great on defense(had potential to be stopper) and played with so much heart and desire to win which a think a see only in MJ… and btw i saw someone wrote 6.10 PF,he was 6.7-6.8 sf that played a sometimes pf in college but his true positon was Sf…So sad that we didnt see him in nba,i bet on my life that today we wouldnt talk about Michael as the untouchable…he wouldnt have all those rings.. 😉

Benji Wilson was another guy who could have been great. He was murdered in 1984 a day before his senior season. he was the #1 ranked player in the nation, the first player from Chicago to be named the top player, and Nick Anderson and Derrick Rose wore #25 when they played at Simeon to honor him.

Arman wtf are u talking about? They never compared Bias to MJ. they said Bias was probably a better prospect/player at that time in college bball. how can u compare a scoring 2 guard to a athletic PF? And virtually unguardable?? he had crazy potential but unguardable? his jumpshot was not THAT nice. he had a descent mid range shot but ur acting like hes fkn ray allen or something. I got the chance to watch Bias play alot and he was VERY raw.but definatly one of the most exciting and intimidating college bball players ever. and he was def taller than 6’7. Try a solid 6’9 but played as if he was 10 feet tall

Thankx Zeke33,Its about time someone that saw him play, instead of watching YouTube highlights speak up….Bias was a major talent, but he had alot of holes in his game…Jordan superior ball handling skills allowed him to get anywhere on the court he wanted….

Arman your dad must’ve wanted you to be the basketball version of Tiger Woods showing you tapes at the age of 3….You might be the only person on earth that can remember what he was doing when he was 3…..Dude you need to get off this site and go make money off that GIFT…..

I read Bo Kimble’s book back in the day, Loyola Marymount is a small school and they had a really obsure offense where they ran and scored tons of points. Gathers was really aggressive on the glass and when so many shots were fired it’s only natural there were a lot of offensive rebounds up for grabs.  His stats were sick, but at 6’7”  playing in a mid major and with that strange offense that is why his professional impact was questioned, but he still would have gone 1st round.

Joe Wolf…i personally think it is more impressive that Gathers was a beast on the boards in such an obscure offense. Do you know what kind of shape you have to be in to run up and down the floor plus do all the dirty work on the boards?? To me thats nuts. I played some college ball and i cant even imagine running that offense while doing all of that bangin around down low

Bias was listed at 6’8", 210 lbs. He was probably the most athletically gifted forward in college basketball history.  He could jump out of the gym and he had a very nice shot by the time he left college.  He was like a bigger more powerful version of Wilkins.
