DolanCareParticipantI was talking with a friend earlier about how the league has made changes on what is allowed on defense. Significant changes were made in the late 90s when hand checking and use of the forearm were ruled as personal fouls. I personally wish that this type of physical defending was permitted again on some level. These allowances made games more chippy, and thus more compeititive IMO.
I just wanted to hear some more thoughts on this matter… You guys miss the old play? Or do you guys appreciate what these changes have done for offensive flow?

bobbybParticipantThis is why i love Olympic/ Fiba competition. The ref says "play on" even if a man goes down. I agree with Jeff Van Gundy where he said he dislike the fact that the Ref always calls a fould if someone goes down.I think it is ironic when basketball fans call soccer players " floppers" when basketball is the biggest flopper sport . There is no other sport where the offensive play "initiates" contact with his defender and then the foul is called on the defender for doing his job. I

TomShoeParticipantThis isn’t a blood sport like football. While we do enjoy the physicality of the game, we don’t want to see players get hurt out there. Plus players aren’t as interchangeable as they are in football. Teams can take a big hit when a player gets injured. You’re more likely to notice when a player goes missing from a roster of 15 rather that 55.
Besides, do you want to see more stuff like this?
That’s what I thought.0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/26/2012 - 1:46pm #700609
DolanCareParticipantWhile I appreciate your gifs, you can’t equate those kind of hits with handchecking and the forearm. Blanketing defense could eventually trigger incidences like with Pittman/Stevemson, but that happens in sports IMO.

ChewyParticipantIf you have one hand on the guy your fine. If you put two hands on him its a foul… makes sense to me. Your not supposed to play defense with your hands. You have to move your feet a beat him to a spot. I think this guard dominated era is much more entertaining than watching two dominate Centers battle while 8 players watch and wait.
The center dominated time puts the refs in a more likely situation to decide the game because you can call a foul on 90% of beg men’s moves (because it is so relient on power and contact) whereas you can’t call many fouls on Tony Paker and Derrick Rose’s floaters or Chris Paul’s oops. I think this guard dominated era kepts the best players on the floor longer and that is good for the game.

bobforteParticipanti think two rules should be re-instituted handchecking. Because it is about being physical but still moving your feet you can’t just hold the guy. The other rule is five second call with the ball. I think it would move the ball a little more and would bring the intensity up at the end of games especially if you can actually get into them with out it being called a foul

HotSnotParticipantThe forearm rule is selectively called IMO. If you have a big guy backing a smaller player down in the post, nothing gets called when the defender is using his forearm as protection. Sometimes this battle is so one sided the defender uses both forearms and still no whistle.

llperezguys hand check and place forearms on opponents all the time. You honestly think guys are out there checking each other without touching each other? besides, even in the older days where hand checking was more allowed, they still didnt allow you to push or shove or try and control your opponent.

omphalosParticipantI would like hand-checking back too. The increase in drawn-charges and flops is a direct result of the greater difficulty in guarding your own man with no hands; it’s that much harder to play lockdown individual D these days which is why the DPOY award is almost entirely a big man award, because its simple too difficult dor a lot of perimeter guys to impact the game to the same extent defensively anymore (I know that’s been a trend for some time but the point remains).
