watching NBA Hardwood Classics on NBA TV and they’ve been showing Reggie Miller and his great games against the Knicks in the mid-90’s.  Reggie Miller is obviously one of the greatest shooters of all-time.  Ray Allen recently eclipsed his all-time 3 points made record last year.  Reggie didn’t have the purest stroke of all-time, but it was obviously effective.  One other great shooter that came to mind with an uneven stroke was Peja Stojakovic in his prime with the Kings.  He was a great shooter, but his stroke was rather ugly.  He kind of slung the ball from behind his, but hey, it went in more often that not.  What othe players had unsure shot mechanics but were pretty good or great shooters?

Definitely Ray and Peja like you said.  Put Michael Redd up there back in his days in Milwaukee.  Kevin Martin has a weird looking shooting stroke, but it usually is effective.  Matt Bonner’s form looks good, but its not how a coach would teach you to shoot.  Eddi House has a weird looking one to, it was like a middle school push up shot, but with more air to his jump.

Watching Shawn Marion shoot any sort of jumpshot usually send me into an epileptic seizure

Marion is very far from a great shooter though

First guy I thought of when reading the topic title was Redd, his jumpshot just doesn’t look right, but it’s money

Marion has shot over 48% from the floor for his career. Im willing to bet there were a couple jumpers in there at some point. He’s hit 1/3 of his 3’s hes taken, and shot over 81% from the free throw line. Every shot taken, every shot Fugly.

The topic is "great shooters with unpure mechanics"

No way is Marion a marksman, he has made a living off of hustle, defense, unorthodox shots and athletisism, no way has he made a living off of his great shooting

Ok, then why dont you give me a pool of players to choose from, ill pick one, then you let me know if I was correct. There are only a small handful of great shooters to begin with.

Ray’s stroke is picture perfect. K-Mart def has a weird looking shot. M Redd has a left shot that looks funky.

I am definitely showing my age but I alway thought Hodges was a great shooter with a broke shot. His elbow was way out to the side and I did not like his follow thru, but the guy was money.  And for those who don’t consider him a great shooter, he has a decent resume.

Craig Anthony Hodges professional basketball player who played in the NBA for 10 seasons and led the league in 3-point shooting percentage three times.[2] He won two NBA Championships with the Chicago Bulls, and along with Larry Bird, is only one of two players to win three consecutive Three Point Contests at the National Basketball Association All-Star Weekend, winning the competition in 1990, 1991, and 1992.[3] Hodges also holds the Three Point Contest records for the most consecutive shots made with 19, set in 1991, and the most points scored in a single round at 25, set in 1986.

Larry’s was not that weird or anything.  But it definately was not a pure looking stroke like Allen’s either.  For the most part it kind of looked like he couldn’t less care weither it went in or not.  It’s going to go in no matter what, so why try so hard.

First person that comes to mind in today’s game is John Shurna. He has one of the ugliest looking strokes i’ve ever seen, but he shot 44% from deep and won the college 3 point contest last year.

If you read my post, I didn’t say anything about Ray Allen’s jumper not being perfect.  I said Ray Allen passed Reggie Miller for the all-time 3 point field goals made record last year and that Reggie Miller’s jumper wasn’t perfect.

Yeah my first person that came to mind was John Shurna…happens to be my favorite player since his early HS days…very very ugly shot but it goes in at a very high percentage like zachb757 said!

Michael Adams. Not exactly a great shooter, bit he was known as a shooter. He attempted 5+ threes per game in 5 different seasons making just under 1000 in his career. He was an all-star in 1992. He has an ugly one handed push shot as he was 5-10 and 160 lbs. It was entirely one hand and he would lunge his whole body into with his feet landing a good 3 feet in front of the line when he was done.

Neither Dirk nor Nash have orthodox shots, but both have been very effective and efficient shooters over the course of their careers.

Sam Perkins became a very good 3 point shooter later in his career and he looked like he just slung it over his head into the goal while he didn’t even really jump. I don’t know if you can call him a great shooter, but he hit over 38.5% of his 3’s for 5 full NBA seasons and participated in at least 1 3 point contest, that I remember.

Certainly Ray Allen doesn’t have bad form. And it is a good looking shot. But I’ve never thought he has perfect form. He doesn’t get full extension on his shooting hand. It isn’t a short arm like S. Marion but it isn’t locked out straight at the elbow like most great shooters. He also kind of follows through to right with his hand instead of straight ahead and down (reaching into the cookie jar is how it is sometimes taught).

I think good form is important, but once your form is basically good and solid, you probably have to find the right thing that works for you. It won’t be the same for everyone. At the very least everyone has a different size hand while the ball is the same for everyone.

      Hahaha nice.

It’s also about body build. Kevin Garnett was a great jump shooter in Minnesota but he obviously didn’t have perfect form, most likely thanks to his length. Same goes for Kevin Durant and Matt Bonner. They each are built differently, have different forms because of that, but each can knock down the open 3. Yes I just mentioned Matt Bonner in the same sentence as Kevin Durant.

How did I get 3 negs for naming Dirk and Nash. I know the posters on here don’t think these 2 guys have normal looking shots. I mean of course they aren’t as bad as some such as Kevin Martin, but they aren’t exactly pure strokes. Nash especially.
