White ChocolateParticipantI think that I have found the best comparison for Gordon Hayward than anybody has yet. Matt Harpring, Harpring is 6-7, Hayward is 6-8, Harpring weighs 230 lbs, Hayward weighs 207 lbs. If Hayward can put on 15-20 lbs of muscle he will be a very good player. Like Harpring, Hayward is a rebounding small forward and they both are pretty good scorers. I think that Hayward with come off the bench for a while with the Utah Jazz like Harpring, but I think that eventually he will start and produce for the Jazz also like Harpring.
Does any body have a better comparison for Gordon Hayward, any comments, or does any body agree with me?

ilike.panochasParticipantHayward = Harpring ? I don’t know about that one. Harpring was a rugged forward(ex-football player), while Hayward is a skilled forward, the only similarities they have they can both hit 3 pointers, and I would say Harpring is alot stronger than Hayward. And Harpring was also capable of playing a little bit of PF, I don’t think Hayward can handle that.

sammybuckeye13ParticipantJust because they’re white and play the same position for the Jazz doesn’t make them similar. For two swingmen they’re practically polar opposites. Harpring was an absolute brute with the least refined offensive game of anyone at the position when he played (though he had a way of getting the ball the basket), while Hayward is all finesse, very skinny and with a very dynamic offensive repertoire. For the last 3 years of his career Harpring was simply a brute and an enforcer. Can you imagine Hayward becoming that?

Malik-UniversalParticipantto me hayward is like tayshaun prince right handed, but without the on ball defense… both guys can hit shots, rebound, and handle the ball…

the barronParticipantMatt Harpring was my favorite player the last couple of years of his career. Since the guy lost some speed because of injuries he was an overly physical guy that would get on peoples nerves. Strong as a rock too. Maybe Matt Harpring earlier in his career could be a better comparision to Gordon Hayward.

WizardofOzParticipantI think that you are a very biased poster. You only make threads about the Jazz.

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantSigh….more bias posting.
Harping was in his prime a good defender. I don’t believe Hayward has the toughness and defensive abilities. Hayward right now is a good project. He is not really ready to be getting legit player mintues. He should be getting 8-16 mpg in his rookie season IMO to see what he can do.

Hayward doesn’t have the defensive ability, but he definitely has the toughness.

j1232eParticipantthat is the worst comparison i have heard, harpring made his career by banging, Gordon will have to live in the weight room to come anywhere close to this comparison.

Toughness like Harpring? I don’t know that. He was a football player in the NBA. He was a tough guy. I wonder if Hayward has the sense play like that.

Do you remember Harpring at Georgia Tech? He was a four year player, but I remember him during his fresh/soph years… He wasn’t a tough guy. He wasn’t 235 lbs or nearly as strong as he was in the NBA either. He always played with a toughness, but he didn’t become a tough guy until he got stronger and added that muscle. He wasn’t very tall or quick laterally, so he got the max out of physical skills in the NBA.
I don’t think Harpring is a good comparison and both players have different personalities, but I do see some of that toughness in Hayward. He’s tough and competes very hard… Lacks lateral quickness and length on the defensive end, but never gives up on a play. Shows that toughness when crashing the boards. Plays with a grittiness.
The only thing Hayward is lacking is muscle/weight.
