Good Riddance
Though I agree with you to a certain degree you didn't have to continue reading his articles
He doesn't break down his formula because of proprietary reasons. That's his invention. That'd be like letting people know your secret recipe.
He is on his own d!ck though. I won't miss him.
the PER is a mathematical formula that basically breaks down EVERYTHING a player does, good and bad. esssentially is FACTORS everything from all statistical categories points, assists, rebounds, blocks, steals ect.. then it subtracts factors like turnovers, fouls, missed ft's/fgs/3p, points scored for and against (+/-)..
think of calculating it in almost like adding all the good stats you get and then subtracting all the bad stats you get..
obviously hollinger keeps particulars to himself also, i dont know if he ever explained all of the factors
more about the PER can be found here.

Am I the only one that's glad that John Hollinger is leaving ESPN? I got tired of reading his articles where he always talked about this "formula" he uses but never discusses it or breaks it down. This guy was too much in love with "PER" also; his power rankings were really the only good thing he did; even though sometimes he had some teams in odd spots
