I just saw the forum topic about whether Gasol could join the Spurs. Someone brought up the idea of OKC signing Gasol, to finally give them a low-post presence. The problem for OKC is however they still have Perkins as dead salary weight, which seems to prevent them from adding additional salary. Now I wonder whether the Lakers would be willing to take on Perkins’ contract in a sign-and-trade for Gasol, when OKC would give them some additional incentive (21st or 29th pick). So the idea would then be:

Lakers give: Gasol (signs 2 yrs, $16/18 million + player option)
OKC gives: Perkins (1 yr, $ million) + 21st pick this year

This would give OKC the opportunity to improve significantly while finally dumping Perkins, while the Lakers get something in return for taking on additional salary this year (which is no problem considering Perkins’ contract will end in 2015, when Lakers aim at adding free agents).

OKC could also just amnesty Perkins but there owner is extremely cheap. Gasol would fit in perfectly there though.  He could play next to Ibaka or Adams.  That would be a nice pickup for them.

As a Lakers fan I would consider it for the 21st absolutely.  The problem is free agency isn’t until after the draft.  Which brings up another topic.

Could you imagine the type of action that would be going on at draft time if free agency started before the draft and it was open season? Holy cow.

For entertainment sake I fully agree and have thought this many times. I just think it would take execs too much brain power to do the draft and free agency at the same time.

No way this trade would ever go down.

This would first require Pau wanting to go to OKC (possible)

Then the Lakers would have to be willing to help out a team in Conference, clearly signalling they don’t consider themselves in position to contend while Kobe is around (highly unlikely)

Then it would require the Lakers to believe the #21 pick is worth the burden of taking on Perkins contract (no chance in hell).

Such a deal would maybe work for the 5th pick, or an asset the Lakers could pair with their #7 pick to swing a deal for Love. There’s nothing OKC could reasonably offer.

I agree, wouldn’t go down… Not because Pau wouldn’t play for OKC, but because the trade is f*cking stupid. Lakers don’t want OKCs trash and a role player pick in exchange for helping OKC and their cheapskate owner. Just crazy.

Basketball-wise, they should just amnesty Perkins and sign Gasol. No cost. If the owner is that cheap and doesn’t want to pay for Perkins, the Lakers would need more than such a low pick to be worth eating Perkins’ contract. Jeremy Lamb would do the trick, but OKC might need him.

Even if the Thunder amnesty Perkins, release Thabeet(unguarunteed final year) and exercise the TO on Grant Jerrett they’ll still be only about $5 million under the cap. And thats WITHOUT including the salaries of their two 1st round picks. In other words, if the Thunder are going to pursue Gasol, I would think it would have to be a sign and trade deal.

How about the Lakers send the Suns Gasol/7th pick and remove 2015 draft pick protections for Eric Bledsoe?

The lakers were a tax paying team last year therefore I’m not sure they can be involved in a sign and trade. Not sure about the thunder, but if they’re a tax paying team as well then the same would stick.

Assuming both teams COULD do this, the lakers won’t . They aren’t taking Perkins back to pair with Nash to com I e for nearly 20 million of useless salary that nobody wants when they despite popular belief are tryi to retool to compete again this year. Trade makes I sense unless all realizes they aren’t gettin anybody in free agency and they can’t find a good trade partner for a legit impact player.

The Lakers should take 21 and 29.  Why not?  Then K Perk can help make them tougher.

Who cares if the Thunder use Pau to get to the Finals?

Picks at 21 and 29 with a K Perk’s expiring contract makes the Lakers BETTER.

The Lakers should ask for another asset too, like Grant Jarrett or a future second round pick, but this trade works for both teams.
