    http://www.fresnobee.com/2011/03/17/2314058/bulldogs-smith-going-to-nba.html

I remember a last year nbadraft.net had Smith on their 2011 mock draft for a couple weeks, and I even remember seeing him being in the late lottery a couple times.

After an underwhelimg season for both himself and his team, he feels he is ready to take his game to the next level.

Personally, I really like Greg Smith as an NBA prospect. He’s good a really good physical build and he’s got a NBA body. I remeber last year I would follow Fresno State closely because of Paul George, and this guy Smith really impressed me. He’s only a sophomore, 6-10 250, prototypical size for an NBA big man. Not only does he have the size, he is really strong and he is pretty athletic for his size. . With good workouts I could easily see him being picked in the late teens to early 20s based on his physical skills alone. What do you guys think? Do you see him being a 1st round talent? Does he even get drafted??

Smith’s season has been over for more than a week.

He had a good freshman season by freshman standards. It was something to build off, but he didn’t. He isn’t NBA ready. Whether he is on an NBA roster or not, he is going to spend a lot of time in the NBDL.

Yeah I see a guy with good size and athleticism, with pretty raw talent.

Why is he declaring for the NBA so early? The Tourney just started and Fresno St. is not even in the tournament! What is he thinking? At this stage he will be just be another Hassan Whiteside. Someone that should have stayed at Marshall and was clearly not ready for the NBA yet. Extremely raw. If he comes out now he’ll be sitting on the end of the bench and spending a lot of time in the NBADL. Hopefully he will decide to go back to school before May 8th. He needs to come to his senses and realize that right now he isn’t ready. The league doesn’t need another Hassan Whiteside.  (A player with loads of potential but because of the fact that he is so raw, he is so far a bust and not living up to his potential) I like his talent and I want him to succeed but I definitely don’t want him to experience what Whiteside is experiencing right now. PLEASE STAY IN SCHOOL.

Whiteside is on a four-year contract right now. The guy was as raw as could be and nowhere near ready for the NBA, and staying at Marshall would not have gotten him any closer to being ready. In as much as there were people on this board who thought he was Dwight Howard, Patrick Ewing, or even Marcus Camby last year, he was a project who was had no idea of how to play in the NBA. Smith is nowhere near ready, but how is staying at Fresno State going to help him? If some team gives him a Solomon Alabi-like opportunity at the end of the second round where he gets a four year run at around the minimum, it is win-win. If there is a lockout and then no summer league and no training camp, it will set back development of young players. That is a concern. The other concern would be if he goes undrafted and can’t even stick in the NBDL. That is a longshot for someone his size and possessing any kind of potential, but he wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire in the WAC.

The Knicks have talked about bringing Jerome Jordan over from Europe next season who they drafted last summer to fill the role that Mosgov had prior to the Melo trade so taking someone like Greg Smith may be doubtful unless they had a spare 2nd rounder and took a flyer on him.

I had forgotten that Geoff Petrie had put Whiteside on a four year deal so the Kings could well benefit form any upside that he may show in the future.

Smith’s draft value could as always depend on how his workouts go, he only needs to impress one GM to get a decent shot at the NBA. I’d say he’d be in the mix to be a mid 2nd round pick at the moment.
