Esa Ahmad recentLu commited to WVU.  Can anyone tell me anything about him that a google search wont tell?  Is he legit?  Future in the NBA?  Real skills or the kind you have when you are the best player on your HS team?

He did well in the EYBL and it even prompted people in the area (friends and family) to reclaim him a one and done guy. The same was said of fellow Shaker Heights player Terry Rozier and currently he is a projected lottery pick on the big board. He can play big or small but prefers the wing. He has solid fluidity and is the best player in the area outside Carlton Bragg another 6’8 shooting guard who is a little soft but talented. His jumper is improving and his love of the wide wing makes me see him as molding himself into a LaQuinton Ross like of player. They actually looked very similar to with like body types, not that that matters, Ahmad is tougher, a better rebounder and could grow into a stretch 4 with a few more inches in height.

He is not an elite athlete and will face problems if it is determined he is a 3 as a nba prospect. He is crafty and has post moves and a mid range game. I hope he doesn’t become a spot up 3 point chucker.

He seems like a three year guy and is increasingly handling the ball more which will aid his ability as a passer. He is a savy smart player which will help him.

Thanks man.  We have a really crowded front court so i guess the plan is to use him as a SF his freshman year and once our bigs leave, he may become a PF.

Ask him —–besides you can’t face up if you deplore contact.

He would be destroyed in the inside if a Coach told him I see you as a Thad Young in my program

Its Durant or bust and I say bust, but that it purely my opinion.

He is tough, seems close to 6’7, maybe pushing 6’8 (had one friend remark he thought he was much taller than listed). Plays beyond his size, fits really well as a college 4 with definite instinct as a scorer. Just missed the cut for guys I was going to feature in my recap. Actually wanted to do a Q&A for people who wanted to know more than what I had written, just never got around to it. Glad you asked and think you got a great college player who should contribute in the rotation quickly.

Definitely in the "tweener" mold as far as the NBA is concerned, as the poster of many names pointed out. He is not overly fast or quick, though he has some decent bounce and strength that should help the transition to college. His handle and range will need improvement, though he has some ability facing up, good hands and is active on the glass.

Hate to make comparisons, though the guy Esa sort of reminds me of is DeShaun Thomas. Think DeShaun was a much more gifted scorer, though Esa has a little more to his game than that, filling in the role of the overpowering forward who can eventually make a big impact. Down the line, this guy could very well be All-Conference as long as he maintains and keeps his body.

Not sure he ever fully adjusts to the 3 spot, though he is at least passable by college standards and he works hard on both ends. Think he is the best recruit Huggins has had since Devin Ebanks, think he could make an instant impact and be around for 3-4 years with the questions regarding his NBA position.

Thanks man. I went to the WVU forums first and was hearing the typical fanboy crap that he is going to be a lottery pick next year and he was the next Beasley (college version).  So when i heard this, i researched him a little more, watched some YouTube of him and came away disapointed.  I didnt know the kid but i was expecting to see someone who would dominate right away.  I posted that "he looks like a good college player but i dont know if he will ever play in the NBA" and of course i got destroyed.  LoL.

Good to hear reports from guys that dont bleed blue and gold.

i like him. he’s physical and smooth. not quite as good but he reminds me a bit of a young caron. he’s not quick but has a good feel. knows how to use fakes and his body to create space. has the strength to play through contact. needs to trim a little baby fat. maybe that’ll unveil some untapped athletic potential
